Title of film? Rubicon? I believe a mango juice drink had the
name first. Now it’s title is Valkyrie. But it should be called
‘THE UNIFORM’. Lets face it, this film isn’t about Stauffenberg
and his failed plot to assassinate Hitler, it’s about wearing the
Nazi attire. There’s nothing an English actor enjoys more than parading about in that grey suit and I bet the Germans know it!

Looks like a cracking story and I’m looking forward to it. It’d be nice if Mr Cruise could adopt another accent but it’s not a show stopper for me.

Tom Cruise has little depth as an actor, and insufficient gravitas to pull off this role. Saying so doesn’t make one a “Cruise basher”. He really does look ridiculous in the uniform, and with the eyepatch, speaking in his usual accent while surrounded by actors with British accents. It doesn’t matter whose decision allowing that was, it just matters that the effect is unsatisfying and makes it difficult for viewers to immerse themselves in the world of the film.

True, it’s very difficult to separate “Actor Tom Cruise” from the couch-jumping, scientology-preaching, divorced, remarried guy in the tabloids. Were he as talented an actor as Shooter believes, Tom could achieve “suspension of disbelief” in his viewers. However, he can’t, obviously. You decide why that is, if it’s of concern to you.

The film will flop because a juggernaut of bad publicity has tainted it (justifiably in my opinion, but that doesn’t matter). In the case of film openings, perception is truth, and the perception, even in inner circles, is that this one is a dog, in large part due to the presence of Cruise.

If they did use German accents, as an audience member I would feel like I was watching German people speaking English in Germany and that would’ve been weird. At least this way I can pretend that I understand their language and just enjoy the movie.

This movie is going to be a hit and Tom Cruise is still a great actor. I think a lot of you Cruise bashers are simply unable to separate the actor from the couch-jumping, scientologist preaching, divorced and remarried movie star.

Back when I was in my teens, I saw Top Gun, Risky Business & whatnot, and TC was fairly believable in those. But I just haven’t found him appealing for decades. This trailer certainly doesn’t change that — it IS really jarring to have all those British accents, then Tom Cruise speaking in his usual way, with his usual emphases, and his usual expressions — I just can’t buy it!
It’s a disappointment for me, because I love Bryan Singer, and I’m sorry he got saddled with Cruise for what could’ve been a great project. It is what it is, and so far, it looks like a bomb to me. One person’s opinion!

Tom Cruise has lost his mind, plain and simple. He and David Miscavage should enjoy there private times in the Captains Quarters on the Flag Ship at Gold Base (only Scientologists are going to get that comment).

I hope everything that L. Ron Hubbard has influenced or created fails miserably. Think about the fact that only one country on this planet view Scientology as an outright evil….Germany.

What better way to attempt to change perceptions than to have Scientology’s poster boy play a German hero.

I’m all for religious freedom, but I know a cult when I see one and so does Germany. Anyone who has reached OT3 and the Wall of Fire in Scientology is a complete numbskull. Believe in whatever you want, but when it rips apart families and cons people of their money…sick.

I really do hope people boycott this film, not only cause of Cruise, but plainly because it looks awful.

I think Tom Cruise is totally unsuited to playing Count von Stauffenberg for many reasons. One, von Stauffenberg was a tall man whereas Cruise is short and does not suit uniform! Of course a “name” is needed to carry the film, but Cruise? No way. The cast is good, and it’s good to see Carice van Houten on the list.

The 1944 plot to kill Hitler has been filmed at least twice in Germany, one recent version starred Sebastian Koch as von Stauffenberg. This is a German, subtitled production.

I would watch Valkyrie out of sheer curiosity, but think Cruise has another flop on his hands, as was commented on earlier by someone else.

Perhaps the reason Hollywood choose to make the movie in English without the presence of accents was in order to appeal to the American at large. It would of been nice if Germany was in charge of this project, but if it had been, it would not have driven Americans to see it, even if it reached the big screen in the states. America is proud of its film industry, and supports it zealously.

Highnoon and lily have valid points: I have noticed that foreign set films are done in the accent of the actor with the idea that to “fake” an accent is worse than just telling the story, (as if we are to pretend that a German ACCENT equates the German LANGUAGE!).

subtitles would be fine, but is the story then lost?

I’d like to see the script: there were a lot of civilians involved in that (not the least, Christian apologist Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Germany’s CS Lewis). That would diminish the “thriller without a point” aspect of the production.

Maybe they’ll see these posts and add German subtitles for Americans! :-)

German trailer was an improvement, but can
you imagine if the Germans had made this film?
Das Boot, Stalingrad and Downfall are tough
acts to follow. Do Germans really need
assistance recreating their own history for the

I don’t think I’ll go to see this in the theaters ,but I would rent the dvd if it did have German language with english subtitles.

Granted Tom Cruise isn’t that great as the people he surrounds himself with ,but it feels right to have the original language.

At least make the “Hunt For Red October” approach, for 5 minutes use the native language then use english.

I’m tired of slamming Hollywood and by the films I’ve seen I don’t think I’ll be stopping anytime soon. There needs to be a change in the films being made!

Okay I’m going to defend Cruise here and every other cast member about the accents thing-
-I have read that the Director Byran Singer decided not to use German accents in the film, not Tom Cruise or any other actor.
Just get rid of the bloody British accent, which sounds more out of place then an American one, No? (Yes I’m blaming someone else other then Tom Cruise for having a accent).
-Cruise did not decide to get rid of all the German actors, whoever wrote that is lying for some reason.
-This is not the first movie to feature non accented english set in another country.

-And YES there are numerous German/Austrian what have you films (and docos) about Stauffenberg and the July 20 Plot. I’ve seen one (TV movie recently).
But how many people before this trailer had actually heard of Stauffenberg, seriously?? I mean before a quick google that is before posting about it. I bet the average joe would have no clue about who Stauffenberg was.
I no I hadn’t.

I am more concerned about Tom Cruise’s alleged acting ability. I for one am a fan of most of his action movies, but in a movie like this that the rest of the cast seems to be speaking in an english accent and him speaking normally (American)…I wonder where the real acting is on his part. I am sure most actors that are supposed to be of his caliber or rank would have taken time to do some phonics or voice training for the role. This alone takes so much away from the film…I would rather be reading captioned text and listening to German voice-overs than this. Or at the very least an English accent to fit in with the rest of the cast…based on this trailer.

Looks like a good quality film just got robbed by one actors inability to act.

I personally think that the trailer looks good, although it does make the film look very action-packed and mission-impossible-like with big one-liners, like “We must kill Hitler”. My guess is that this is just the way they are marketing it at the moment. I have a feeling the film itself will be a lot less obvious and bombastic in tone.

I tend not to trust trailers too much, because with any film with a hint of suspense and action, suddenly gets marketed heavily on this, and less on the acting and story.

I’m sure Cruise will fit the bill. Does anyone else think he looks younger in this trailer, than his other most recent films?
