Beowulf vs. 300

FXRant has an interesting article about the many similarities between the Beowulf and 300 marketing campaigns.

Both trailers have the lead, bearded, warrior hero, in closeup, loudly proclaiming that “THIS! IS! SPARTA!”, or, “I! AM! BEOWULF!”

Each trailer has an anachronistic guitar-riff-filled montage of violence, wrapped up with our warrior hero proclaiming something about “TONIGHT…” · And, most obviously, each trailer’s graphics are rough, bold, blood red, and set against time-lapse clouds with lightning bursts.

Check out some cool video comparisons below.

when I watched the Beowulf trailer and he said “I! AM! BEOWULF!” the “THIS IS SPARTA!” line was the first thing that came to mind.

Why does he saw BEOWULF so fast?

LOL! That is funny because when I saw the TV spot for Beowulf last night it totally reminded of me 300.

Eric, I’ve been wondering the same thing since I first saw the trailer. The speed at which “Beowulf!” is shouted seems so awkard!

I had zero interest in seeing this movie, until they started ripping off 300 in the ads. Now its moved to “probably won’t see it, but the idea isn’t totally ridiculous”. So kudos to the ad team.

the movie represents a great technical achievement. the production, team of ‘artists’, and the director (for lack of knowledge of the media) have wasted a great opportunity to bring 3d & motion capture to the next level. seems like so much time was spent in modeling, texturing, and getting through the technicalities of motion capture, that they forgot (or payed little attention) to keying effective facial expressions. overall, this movie will mark the beginning of a highly promising medium, but i’m afraid it will be a mark to be soon erased by the next.
