The crew that wrote the screenplay for Lord of the Rings films worked on it for 10 years. They were constantly changing and making it better because they were such enormous fans (and experts) of the collected works of Tolkien. That's what made LOTR movies so great. Almost all the aspects and ideas that were changed from writing the book to screenplay form, either helped the story along or made it better. It was the screenplay writers' love of the LOTR books, and their intrcate knowledge of them, that allowed them to be able to interpret succesfully those incredibly complex tales to screen. You cannot just have anyone come in and write a screenplay for something that is as popluar and well known as "The Hobbit".
