We’ve seen promo reels, and leaked footage, but the first official trailer for Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo is now online. I must admit, I have exactly no interest in seeing this movie. It looks pretty bad, almost like a b-movie. But this trailer is pretty well cut to hide many of the film’s inherent weaknesses.
I know some of my buddies (like Alex at FS) will disagree. It seems like Rambo will always have a vocal hardcore following. In the past when I have posted some negative thoughts about the project, I have been greeted with a couple “You’re not a Patriot if you don’t like Rambo” or “You’re not a man if you don’t want to see this movie.” Both of the statements seem to be laughably flawed. And maybe I’m just missing something. Maybe I just don’t “get it.” Please leave your hateful and ignorant comments below. Check out the new trailer below.
Rambo hits theaters on January 25th 2008.

I don’t think you’re wrong for not being interested in this movie. And you’re right in your assessment that this looks like, and probably is, “a B movie.” But you seem to be missing the larger picture…
Many people are interested in this movie because it looks like a throwback to all the classic action movies many of us grew up with. The CGI is minimal, if not nonexistant, and the story revolves around a muscle-bound supersoldier hell bent on “making good on the promise he’s made”, regardless if he didn’t originally want anything to do with it in the first place.
This is the kind of movie that Hot Fuzz paid tribute to. This is the kind of movie where you sit back and veg out for 2 hours, knowing damn well that the only real thinking required upon viewing is whether or not they used enough fake blood.
This movie won’t be good from a technical standpoint, not by a longshot. But it will be entertaining. It will be fun to watch. And it will remind us all why we fell in love with action movies in the first place.

I disagree with your opinion, but im not gonna argue it because that is YOUR opinion. im sure theres movies you love that i have no interest in as well.
All I will say though is, you are mising the point of the attraction to this movie. over the years, action movies have become PC, watered down PG-13 CGI fests. this movie harcons back to the days of old when Arnie, sly or bruce would just take some weapons and reak havoc upon enemies. and THAT is the selling point of this movie. there hasnt been a movie like this for awhile, and sly is pretty ballsy to do this.
I have high faith in this movie as he did a great job with Rocky Balboa. in his old age, Sly knows what to do IMO
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:45 pm
Mike: I agree with your comments about watered down action movies (especially in a day and age when Die Hard is PG-13) but if this is what an R-Rated action movie looks like, I don’t need it. I’m not a film snob however, I love popcorn movies. I even LOVED Rocky Balboa. So I don’t have anything against Sly. Rambo just looks…. bad. And by B-Movie, I mean bad storyline, bad acting, bad special effects… Why can’t a hardcore action movie be done right now-a-days?
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:47 pm
I might see it, but not in theaters. I’ll possibly rent it a long ways down the road. Not my kind of movie. I agree with you on the idiotic statements like “You’re not a Patriot if you don’t like Rambo†and “You’re not a man if you don’t want to see this movie.”

I don’t think it’s a matter of being an unpatriotic girlyman, it’s just a matter of taste. Personally, I haven’t seen any of the Rambo movies, but I’ve schooled myself well in the past couple years on the brilliance of bad, over-the-top action movies. I got in some debates with my film studies professor over how this kind of movie benefits society, if it does at all, and never really came to much more of a conclusion than the fact that movies in this style are quasi-cathartic cinematic junk food. It’s the kind of movie you can simultaneously laugh at at pump your fist in the air going “fuck yeah!”
Bad action movies started as something of a guilty pleasure for me, but have slowly become something I’m more willing to defend, often by using words like “catharsis” and “preposterous.” I can’t remember how I got interested in action movies, but it probably stemmed from my desire to separate myself from pretentious film snobs. I still appreciate good movies, but a lot of times I don’t want to watch something touching or thought-provoking. There’s enough in my daily life to make me wanna cry or think deeply about the meaning of it all; my life, however, is seriously lacking in guys in jeeps getting exploded point-blank with friggin’ rocket launchers.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:24 pm
Man. This movie is going to do gangbusters. All of these pretentious war movies are wearing everyone out. Lions for Lambs, anyone? Two hours of generic discourse from smooth Cruise? Rambo is back just in time. Killing for killing’s sake, war is war et al. It’s a big sigh of relief to be honest. Hollywood isn’t delivering good action anymore. I Am Legend is like 28 Years Later. Boring. Give me Stallone shooting an arrow tipped with a bomb into some Burma kook and I’ll be there. No more talky talky. There’s no way to talk about the Iraq War anymore. It’s a farce. Just get on with the: people are violent, people do bad things, people face the wrath of Rambo. I love that he’s killing without a country these days. B-Movie. Aren’t all the Rambos B-Movies??? It’ll gross at least $70 million. Signs of the times. The 80s are back! Right in time for WWIII.

There’s a little hype on ass kicking action movie full of cliché like that since many years (Snake on a plane, The Marine…)
Some people like it because they really took it serously, have absolutly no critic sense and can’t make the diffrence between there personals opinions and the quality of a movie. Some people like it because it’s an entertaining violence fest and the movie take part of a social phenomen.

Peter Sciretta: “Rambo just looks…. bad. And by B-Movie, I mean bad storyline, bad acting, bad special effects… Why can’t a hardcore action movie be done right now-a-days?”
What are you talking about? Bad special effects…based on what? From a two minute trailer you’ve surmised that the film has bad special effects. Looked pretty good to me, I mean what were you watching? What do you know about special effects? Bad acting? Rambo barely says anything, and that’s the point: the character expresses himself through action and body language, and he’s certainly doing a lot of that in this trailer, and no one will be able to tell exactly what the nature of the performance is until they see the movie. Why can’t a hardcore action movie be done right now-a-days you ask. If you don’t think this new Rambo film has that potential, I can only believe that you don’t know what a hardcore action movie really is. And if you’re so convinced that no one knows how to do it, why don’t you go make one right now and show the world your genius.
And bad storyline? Uh, gee, placing the ultimate but disillusioned lone warrior into the heart of the site of the greatest human atrocities being committed, yeah what a horrible idea that is. Sure, placing a warrior into a fight that needs to be fought like no other, and casting an ex-Burmese soldier as the antagonist…how inauthentic and stupid! Yes, what a bad storyline. On the other hand, at least you put so much erudite thought into your critiques: “it all just looks bad!”
Give me a break.

“Leave me alone!! Leave me alo-ho-hone!! Leave me Alone!! (Just Stop It) JUST STOP DOGGING ME AROUND!!
- Michael Jackson
Leave Pete alone, yea he have have forgotten what its like to enjoy being a peon like you and I, up on his pedestal. But he is a very good journalist, just with a “What will my other online press friends say about me if I like it?!” skewed opinion. He brings us good news.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:21 pm
I see that most of you that watched the trailer are huge Rambo fans, but that looks awful. I don’t care about Sly being 62, so what, I loved Rocky Balboa, but this looks as bad as John Cena’s The Marine.
October 24th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
I think people who are saying the film “looks bad” are criticizing what is a positive thing. People have labeled it a B movie. That’s because all of the Rambo films have a purposefully B movie aesthetic design. They are supposed to look like B movies because Rambo the character and the films designed around him are all about grim, brutal violence and warfare. The film should look like a B movie…it’s a film where Rambo literally rips people’s throats out. If the film looked like a glossy, polished Hollywood production it would be contrary to the subject matter and character. So people who negatively say the movie looks like a B movie clearly do not understand what the character and franchise are about.
October 25th, 2007 at 3:57 am
Fair comment, I know you don’t fully understand the ‘BO’ but there is a huge following for this character portrayed with sheer dynamo by Sylvester…he is indeed a powerhouse of action, even in his 60’s he’s still going for it….Although I am looking forward to the movie - the trailer is flawed and it really needs Jerry Goldsmith’s signature themes thru out…it’s like having a Rocky score composed by Hans Zimmer..it just doesn’t go right! I hope Brian Tyler handles the score in the Jerry Vein and keep the themes like John Ottman did with the new Superman movie…(hey it sucked but it had the themes)….well done SLY for bring this soldier outta retirement! “Mission?”
October 25th, 2007 at 8:40 am
this movie looks awesome! alot of people doubted rocky balboa but that was a brilliant movie. i think after a short term of doing not so well films stallone is finally back on form and i for 1 will be first in line for this kick ass bloody fest
October 26th, 2007 at 11:49 am
This trailer actually sucks compared to the one Pete posted a few months ago. That was Red Band. It was ….less awful.
October 27th, 2007 at 10:48 am
The attraction for me is to see Stallone in an action movie again, because he’s about the only one in Hollywood who actually looks menacing. You have all these geek, metrosexual, pretty boy types in Hollywoood in action roles. C’mon you expect anyone to be afraid of Brad Pitt or George Clooney? The dorks on the OC TV show? Get real. And all the movies nowadays are CGI effects. RAMBO looks like they will have real stuntmen doing REAL STUNTS, the explosions are real and a menacing character who looks like he could kill, not some 140 lbs, blonde haired, reflection sunglasses wearing dork with frosted tips
November 3rd, 2007 at 10:04 pm
It’s hard to believe that this movie was made before the writer’s strike!!! Rambo: The Colonoscopy Years. Apparently fresh ideas for movies are few & far between in Hollyweird.

One of the disadvantages of the web is that it gives critics and others like them who have never attempted to create something, invested to create something, or labored to create something a platform to ridicule and criticize. It’s so easy to Monday morning quarterback when you’ve never suited up.
The mistake is assuming the film is more than caricature. That mistake is often made by people who have the same faux intellect and experience as the thing they are attempting to critique. IRambo is a Saturday morning adventure cartoon for grownups. Your mistake as a critic is assuming that you have sufficient knowledge and experience to criticize anything. It’s easy when all you’ve done is surf the web with your life to criticize those who are doing the real surfing.
Go develop an idea, get it funded, turn it into a book, article, movie or other project. Do anything but sit and write smugly.
Your generation is all hat and no cattle.
December 1st, 2007 at 6:01 am
This movie could turn out to be a wretched hack job by anyone’s standards. Then again, it could surprise even the most hardcore fans by taking the characters in unexpected directions. “It could” is the key idea here… the movie hasn’t even been released yet and people already hate it. The trailer could have been made better, especially by choosing better music. There are certainly better bands out there than Drowning Pool.
I’m going to do what an intellectually honest person would do: wait until the movie comes out and after I’ve seen it to judge whether I actually like it or not.
December 3rd, 2007 at 5:53 am
This is an action flick bad acting ,blood and guts are what there made of.
If you can not say good things , say nothing
December 3rd, 2007 at 7:18 am
It’s not my type of film, never did like the Rambo films, but it may not be so bad as everyone thinks. I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed Rocky Balboa.
December 3rd, 2007 at 11:52 am
Pft well frankly the fact that most of you have probably seen the other rambos says it all so anyone who really moans about this movie can just not watch it, fair to say the last rambo was a dive but the fact remains they have all been known as classics which people may laugh at but are fully enjoyable to watch, nobody will remmember snakes on a plane or some shit like that ina couple of years because frankly was just a gimmic but everyone remmembers > terminator, rambo, rocky etc etc and like others had said they are over the top fully fun action movies with hilarious lines you remmember and so on, also i agree full heartedly with the comment about CGI, computers > taking over every industry going, its as if without it now adays they think the film will flop, and im glad Sly has made this as the final one.
Well i will be awaiting this and cloverfield ;)
December 3rd, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Based on the greatness of previous Stallone movies, I have no doubt that this will be the one that takes him over the top and finally garners him that much anticipated Oscar.
December 3rd, 2007 at 4:01 pm
This movie is going to kick ass.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:17 am
well its an alright trailer, doesnt really explain much though about previous rambos, ive never seen any of the rambos, but this one looks good, not amazing just good. But rocky, ive seen all the rockys, they rock, he doesnt always win, its got a good storyline and alright acting, and with rocky 6 (i think it was 6) it explained a tiny bit about previous rockys, this isnt tempting enough for anyone who hasnt seen rambo before, this is mainly directed at rambos hardcore fans, but due to the sheer goodness of rocky and the good amount of reviews off previous rambos i will go to see this. also mike has a good point, stallone may be old, but if you came across him angry in a aleey you’d run for your life, because hes just big and menacing and could crush you in a few blows, but people like george clooney, brad pitt, and some others are a bunch of weeds but they have to ‘ look good’ otherwise people won’t watch it, where as matt damon (hes alright) daniel craig and sylvester stallone are all reasonably ‘hard’ and this film is bringing back hardcore stallone, sure rocky was good but he kill people andbe hard in that, where as rambo is going to quite frankly kick ass, and all you haters cannot deny that it will sell loads, maybe break some records, and it will surely KICK ASS. SLY FTW.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:20 pm
I disagree with our comments. As a retired soldier, I grew up on Rambo. I have shown this trailer to several soldiers in my office and they all have stated, “I will see this movie”. It may not break any records, but it will give a needed relief to all you have served this great nation. RAMBO KICKS ASS!!!!!!
December 14th, 2007 at 11:20 pm
same old crap. let it go.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
sly. looks like 90yrs. old in the trailer. enough is enough!!!!.
December 17th, 2007 at 9:14 pm
Please people..This is Make Believe. From the Land of Make Believe. This isnt real.It never happened.these are fictitious people play acting. no one got hurt or killed, get a grip on yourself..its escapeism
December 19th, 2007 at 11:05 am
Regardless of how anyone feels about this moive, som will like it, and some will dislike it. Personally, I will watch it and after that, I can judge the “bad scenes” “poor quality” “bad acting” etc etc… So hard to be judging something so prematurely don’t ya think
December 19th, 2007 at 3:12 pm
people who think this film is a crap better go and watch lion king with their parents.Rambo and rocky will always be one of the best series and this film is done for its lovers only not to group of children.
December 19th, 2007 at 7:06 pm
I can understand someone giving legitimate reasons why they like or don’t like Rambo or Rocky or any other movie. In fact, some comments, either for or against, are good and worth reading. I DON’T understand those whose comments are ment to be insulting. Comments like “people who think this film is a crap better go and watch lion king with their parents” carry no weight for me. In fact, this type of comment would be more likely to discourage me from seeing the latest Rambo movie at all. And I have seen them all. Its like listening to Charlie Brown’s teacher. WA WA WA WA WA WA WA.
December 26th, 2007 at 11:53 am
…I’ll put it this way, maybe you people will understand what I’m saying since 90% of you or more are illierate.THIS MOVIE-WANNABE SUCKS! If you like it you are just plain idiots, pure and simple. This movie is an insult to good taste.I’m sorry but somebody had to say it.
December 26th, 2007 at 1:14 pm
I will likely never see this movie. However, given a choice between a Rambo movie and Gladiator, I’ld pick Rambo every time. IT’S ALL A MATTER OF TASTE, NOT INTELLIGENCE. I don’t usually like to comment on specific other comments, but in this case, Mr. Rat Rattus, before you decide to call others illiterate or idiots, perhaps you should learn to spell and come up with something constructive to say. I would bet that there are many people smarter than you who will like this movie. Insults are not criticism. You said the movie sucks, so you let your opinion (and that’s all it is) be known. Literate smart people would say that was enough. Again, I do not want to engage in arguments over who said what, but I am sick of reading comments like yours.
December 30th, 2007 at 12:41 am
This actually is refreshing to me, it’s been a while since I’ve seen one of the more classic types of action movie. When I read about the location and plot of this movie it made me think of “Tears of the Sun”, which had good potential but didn’t play out to be worth anything.
Will the movie be ridiculous? Almost assuredly, yet that can and often is overlooked. The effects looked fine to me - the explosions look like real blasts, plenty of gunfire and such so I don’t get that argument. The plot seems fine so far also although it’s mainly going to depend on how authentic the conflict is presented as, and how it is resolved.
Rocky Balboa was better than expected so I’ll extend that line to this movie also. To those who hate Rambo just to hate it, remember that at least it doesn’t have Dennis Hopper in it. Ah how I hate him.
December 31st, 2007 at 7:07 am
you have a right to your opinion, but what i saw in the trailer seams to be the best scrpipted and story line of the Rambo films next to the original which was simply titled first blood. it looks nothing like or even resembles a B movie. i’ve seen alot of B movies and if you did too you would not even make the comparison. it may not be at the high end of quality movies, and i’m sure not going to pay 9 bucks to go see it, this is in it can wait for cable category. which all the Rambo films have been for me except for the original first blood. which if rerelesed in the theatures again i would put my 9 bucks on the counter and watch it again on the big screen. well thanks for the chance to say something about this and thanks for providing the tralier i had only seen the TV commercials on this movie.
December 31st, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Yikes… Sly’s speech is more slurred than normal, maybe it will have subtitles I can read to follow the dialog.
I’ll give Rambo this though… I hope that when I’m 65yrs old like him… I’m in HALF as good of shape!
Why not get a younger sly-look-a-like and do the back story… you know… like when he was a greenberet in nam??? We could see the whole unit: Rambo, Delmore Barry, Danforth, Westmore, Bronson & Ortega back in action! If done well… I think it would be a hit… as opposed to the tired old same-old-same-old.
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:50 am
Yes, a back story could be interesting…but the problem is that Rambo is not one of those characters like batman that you can just slip in a diffnt actor and get the same result. I associate Stallone with Rambo, just like I associate Stallone with Rocky. Can you imagine anyone else playing Rambo or Rocky? No matter how close a look a like you have, I just don’t think it would work… That’s actually one of the problems that I had with the last Superman movie…it looked great, but I associate Chris Reeve with Superman and everytime I saw the new guy I just kept thinking that it didn’t look right.
January 5th, 2008 at 11:27 am
i have been disapointed with lots of movies like the resident evil movies and Doom nothin like the books or video games but i i love rambo grew up watchin rambo since i was 4 and i really really hope Rambo 4 is gonna be not as disapointing as the movies i have looked foward to seeing like i have listed above but im sure you are going to tell me different .Plus not everyone likes rambo such as yourself so i wouldnt worry about what ppl say :)
thank you
January 5th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Rambp is cool, but please why didn’t go after our or the worlds real enemies (Iran, al qaida).
Would have had more potential of being better.
January 6th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
What a bunch of rubbish I see pouring out of so many of you. If you aren’t interested in watching the new Rambo film due to your over inflated expectations, then simply stop watching the trailer, and carry on with your episodes of on the buses!!! Rambo is not supposed to be intelligent in its semantics or to evoke some overwhelming sense of purpose amongst the viewers. Quite simply it is a return to the good old fashioned action films that make you feel like walking over to the looser that stick two fingers up at you whilst cutting you off at a junction, and snapping them off!!! Any one agrees with me??????????
January 7th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
I think that this movie sucks. It looks like rambo belongs in a old folks home. But I am sure for all you guys who are over forty and were around when these b movies started are reminded of your youth so i ain’t going to take that away from you so go enjoy. Hope you enjoy returning to your younger days.
January 8th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I think i will go see this movie becouse 2 me it looks good….i could be wrong im just going to have to wait and see!!
January 20th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Well, in response to the comment “It will let some of you older guys re-live their youth.” I don’t think a lot of us are looking for that. Sly DOES however, inspire us to the fact that we can still be close to as good as we were if we’ve kept ourselves in shape. Just my opinion as an in shape “older” guy (54).
I’ve seen them all. Of course I’m going to see this one.

Dude your not a man if you dont want to see this movie. Seriously go cry to your boy freind. So what if this looks like a b moive, thats part of its charm. I really dont care if you go see this movie or not, lets just call it what it is. You and other homos dont want to see it, who cares?
January 25th, 2008 at 10:36 am
I cannot wait to go and see this Rambo installment. I LOVE all of the Rambo movies and am so excited about this new one. I think that everyone just overthinks movies instead of just going to watch one for the hell of watching a good action movie. I am glad to have a REAL action movie back into the mix.
January 27th, 2008 at 5:51 am
well, well well!! After reading all the comments above, I just have one question to ask of all you criticising/praising the movie and giving it a B-rating or whatever rating - have you seen the movie yet? All this from a 2-minute trailer?
January 28th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Just saw the movie….awesome action movie!!! Nobody can play the badass soldier like Stallone can. NOBODY… Enjoy this movie for what it is…a throwback to the old action movies with explosions, stunts and gunfire….if you want to sit back and watch a character from the 80’s come back and kick ass, this is the movie to see!!!
January 28th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
THIS MOVIE IS REMEMBERING MY CHILD HOOD TO ME. ALMOST 21 YEARS A GO WE WERE WATCHING RAMBO WITH T-7 VIDEO RECEIVER. GOOD LUCK TO SYLVESTER
GOOD JOOB.
February 5th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
I cant believe people are saying this film is going to be rubbish. This film is most likely going to be the best action film anyone has made within a good 10 year because this is bringing back the old rambo which was amd in the 80’s and lets face it, the 80’s were much better at films then, and because this is a sequel from a 1980 character, I believe this film is going to amaze all ranges of ages from 15 and older as it will be a good fit to an end of a cinematic legend (sylvestor stallone).
P.S AT least he is trying to prove that he is a legend by making 2 last films for the end of his career.Ive also heard that sylvestor stallone has agreed to make a rambo V, whether that is true i don’t know.

i like rambo films. from first blood until the last one. maybe i am fan of stallone. but what i like in rambo movies is that it just portray a soldier who can do his job even if he is already old.
people get old. but not all can do his thing.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Maybe it is what you said about this, but I want to tell you that If you see it in another angle,it is different. I like it very much, because I find the real interesying of the film on a dating site**largeloves DOT com.It is great!

I WANT TO DOWNALOAD RAMBO 4
