Sweeney Todd

A new Sweeney Todd Movie Trailer has found it’s way onto the interwebs. This one features less singing and music (not that the first one featured too much), and more than expected blood and gore. It looks like Paramount is going to market this film to a couple different audiences, and this may be our first peek at what the horror/thriller advertising will look like. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will shave/fill his way into theaters this Christmas.Cast: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and Sacha Baron CohenSynopsis: JOHNNY DEPP and Tim Burton join forces again in a big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical thriller “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” DEPP stars in the title role as a man unjustly sent to prison who vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. When he returns to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who “shaved the faces of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard of again.” Joining Depp is HELENA BONHAM CARTER as Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney’s amorous accomplice, who creates diabolical meat pies. The cast also includes ALAN RICKMAN, who portrays the evil Judge Turpin, who sends Sweeney to prison, TIMOTHY SPALL as the Judge’s wicked associate Beadle Bamford and SACHA BARON COHEN as a rival barber, the flamboyant Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

Wow, I can’t wait to see this. I was kind of shocked at the final slice at the end of the trailer!

Is there somethign wrong with me thaT I am completely uninterested in this movie? It has all of the things that could make for a perfect movie.
    Alan Rickman!
    Johnny Depp!
    Tim Burton!
New style musical! ( I really liked Moulin Rouge)
    Justified revenge/serial killing!
    Sacha Cohen!

All of these things are amazing when seperat, but it just doesn’t do anything for me. Is it because he is just a barber, which is kind of lame? Or has the Burton/Depp/Bonham-Carter trifecta just been completely over done?

As a fan of this work by Stephen Sondheim in addition as a cinematic fan of John Depp - I’ve estatic about this dark collaboration helmed by Director Tim Burton - the beauty of this dark tale is in the passion of the lost love and the anger at the world in it’s cruelty and unjust ways - Todd, for all his hell bent anger and revenge, is a sympathetic charachter in a cruel world - I’m hoping the humor and beauty shines through the gore - the music is the life blood of this story (pun intended) and some of the most wonderful melodies and humor of Mr. Sondheim’s lyrical operetta - genious. I’m already missing the phrase “Eye - Talian” from Mrs. Lovett in the trailor (sic) “That’s all very well, but what are we going to do about (him) the Eye-talian!”

Johhny Depp sings Sweeney-pathetic. Dressed in his tight pants with a perm and Bride of Frankenstein shock of white hair-Depp’s and Burton’s Demon Barber looks like tinkerbell on meth. Enough of Depp’s homosexual onscreen personas. He is a fake. And he does not have the talent to sing these incredible Sondheim songs. He is not a good enough actor to bring weight and rage to this part. Bonham Carter cannot sing either and she lacks any of the demented charisma and hilarity of Angela Lansbury. The chorus of robots walking in the back are so wrong-Prince staged this as a tale of a demon of the streets. A demon should be terrifying-not fetching. Burton has never had a clue-and to cut the theme music has emasculated the musical. Burton’s forte is of course to present the emasculated as art.

^^ you lose all your credibility as soon as you say Depp is not good enough actor!
