MTV has the trailer premiere for Kimberly Peirce’s Stop-Loss. Ryan Phillippe returns to Texas after a tour in Iraq, but when he is ordered to return for another tour of duty, he refuses. The film co-stars Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Timothy Olyphant and Abbie Cornish.
While the America seems to be getting sick of the “Iraq War” series of movies, this one somehow seems more poignant than most.
Peirce’s last film, 1999’s Boys Don’t Cry was critically acclaimed, and even won an Academy Award for star Hilary Swank. Check out the trailer after the jump.
Stop-Loss hits theaters on March 28th 2008.

Channing Tatum? I’m more worried about the perpetually vacant-eyed lead Phillippe. And really, is this film at all necessary? Can’t we just turn on the news?

i saw this film in an advance screening in the early summer, and channing tatum didn’t really do it for me. he’d be a great tough guy, a terminator or an 80s action star maybe, but i’ve yet to see him impress me, and that includes guide to recognizing your saints as well. i wanted to see more joseph gordon levitt when i saw it. he plays this guy that’s been seriously warped by his experience.
i love how when hollywood learned what the words “rendition” and “stop loss” meant that they ran out and made examples of it, naming the movies with the exact concept, like it’s an educational film or something, like “DNA” or “Volcanoes”. “stop-loss” is when the military calls servicemembers back, forcing them into another tour. rendition is when the government sends people to countries with lesser human rights laws in order to legally torture things out of them. i get it, and knew it, and yes, it is horrible. but, these movies feel cheap. that sort of ranting aside, when the questioners at the screening asked how many people had heard of stoploss before, most people said that they hadn’t. so maybe it’s a good thing then, i don’t know, but it feels forced to me.

I recently saw a screener of Stop-Loss. Now that the 2007 Oscar season has come to an end it’ not too early to look ahead to next year. While BOYS DON’T CRY launched Swank’s career with a best actress win, 2009 will be Peirce’s time to shine. My prediction- Kim Peirce takes home Best Director.
Take a look at the film’s site- STOP LOSS has created a movement. I look forward to following the film’s success.
