Video: Stephen Colbert to run for President

Stephen ColbertWhat happens when a political news satirist announces on his fake television news show that he is running for president? Sounds like the plot for a bad movie (Man of the Year), but it happened tonight as Stephen Colbert announced his candidacy for president Tuesday night on his Comedy Central television show, The Colbert Report. The mock conservative claims that he will be running under both parties: Democratic and Republican, claiming it took considerable guts because he could “lose twice.”

This comes after weeks of comically refusing to disclose whether he would run for office. In a guest column for Maureen Dowd in Sunday’s New York Times, Colbert wrote: “I am not ready to announce yet - even though it’s clear that the voters are desperate for a white, male, middle-aged, Jesus-trumpeting alternative.”

This is an interesting turn of events because no one knows how far he might take this stunt. Colbert is championed by the YouTube and Wikipedia generation, and it will be interesting to see where his fans may take this. Check out the video of his announcement after the jump.

  • I saw the announcement when it aired, you couldve tipped me over with a feather. I was walking on air. I saw an uncharacteristically nervous Colbert last night, during the early part of his Daily Show guest spot. But there are so many questions. So much that remains to be seen. Would you vote for him Peter? And on which hypothetical ticket?

What I want to know is will he be running as "Stephen Colbert two" the host of his show, or "Stephen Colbert one" the dad/sunday shcool teacher. Very Interesting.
  • It looks like the satirist field is going to be pretty crowded this year. Radio talk show host Stephanie Miller has announced that she's teamed with Cece Goldwater for a "run at the White House." Goldwater is the granddaughter of 1964 Presidential hopeful Barry Goldwater and Miller is the daughter of his runningmate Bob Miller. Their slogan- "Family name. No skills. Just like W."

It's not a "new" idea (not that anyone claimed it was). Back in the 60's, The Smothers Brothers had a regular on their show by the name of Pat Paulsen. He ran for President several times...

This is very interesting if actually true and not just for publicity. Colbert is very much a straight shooter, and does keep a very watchful eye on the politics that are going on. And you can't just attribute that to his writers as he can do it on his own as well. Honestly, there is so much bullcrap that politician's pull. I would be happy to vote for someone that wasn't a politician. President of the US is jsut a figure head anyway, with tons of advisors and "writers".

The only problem I see, is that he does seem very "hollow" I guess is a way to put it, and I really have no idea what he actually stands for and believes. Plus most people aren't going to take him seriously, which is or maybe ISNT a shame.

The character of Colbert is a bit about himself, and things that matter to me. The man behind it seems well read and caring.

Maybe the man can make younger generation active in the political process and the character can make it fun for all and mostly challenging for the other candidates.

I don't believe he will go anywhere in real life but it will push real candidates to be more truthful and responsible about their past and their promises.

I'd say go for it Colbert!
