The roles for women in films have been tanking for years. Oh, occasionally you'll get an independent movie - but it boils down to this: As long as there are sucky men writers writing most of the movies for teenage boys - women will get screwed - in the nicest way, of course.

There is about to be a writer's strike in LA (TV, which is another realm - can we count the number of dead women on TV shows today? CSI (1, 2,3,4...),Law & Order (and their spinoffs), NCIA(?), Cold Case, Missing.. the list goes on...Who is writing this garbage? Why aren't more people turning it and ignoring the bad movies coming out of Gollywood!

I think this is just more of a case of bad movie-itis than a female lead problem, which is more of a writing and script selection issue, Sorry, Nicole Kidman doesn't strike me as very good, especially since she seems to look like a demented Barbie doll now (I mean seriously.. is it just me?)
Jodie Foster is a good actress (good actor, whatever the PC type is now), but really seems to be typecast into roles of a reluctantly strong woman, which seems to make all of her moveis appear the same, but if different settings...
and don't get me started on The Reaping(talk about bad idea) but I will say that Hilary Swank is fine as an actress..
But the common thread of all these films are that they are bad concepts, regardless of male or female leading role, or who is playing it....
Drama's cannot be badly made and then be expected to do well.
Comedies and horror movies make money no matter how crappy they are (See: Will Ferrell, any cheesy knock off movie,Hostel, and

I don't think in general, American audiences go out of their way to avoid movies with females in the lead. I think the problem lies with the marketing. Unless it's a total chick flick type deal, they don't know what to do with them. Some studios are better than others of course, but the WB is awful at them. The Brave One, The Invasion, and The Reaping were all sold as some heavy action-y stuff which they are not. Also, I don't think you can take into account how "bad" something is, because tons of horrible movies make a killing every year. Unless the standard is higher for women which could be the case. Plus, there are just a handful of high profile women movie stars so when their movie does bad, a lot more people notice. It's just easier to blame them, than to take a look at the system and thus be forced to revamp it.
