Since the now infamous Cannes Film Festival screening which resulted in a wave of bad buzz like never seen before, Richard Kelly has been trying to do damage control on his sophomore effort, a follow-up his hit cult first film Donnie Darko. Southland Tales has been re-cut, enhanced with new special effects (which evident in the trailer are not too impressive), and is said to be a totally different movie. And now finally, the movie trailer has hit the web, and it’s everything I hoped the movie might look like. Call me a fanboy, but I want to love this movie. There has been some recent conversation in the comments on this site about the differences between bloggers and critics, and I think that’s one of them. Critics are paid to be critical. Bloggers are paid to be fans. And when things go wrong, they are allowed to be unrelentingly honest about a film, star, director or writer (I’ve even received a few e-mails that I can print from actors, writers, and directors that took issue with some of my comments). But the truth is, most of the bloggers want to see a movie like Resident Evil 3 (sadly, we helped promote the film, but Sony has shut all media out in hopes of keeping the bad buzz from hitting you guys). I know, this is a rant for another time, another post.

I’m really looking forward to Richard Kelly’s new film. I really dig the great Pixies song used in the trailer (Wave of Mutilation), the Moby soundtrack and the play against the famous TS Eliot quote: “This is how the world ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper.” I’ve even read the prequel graphic novels, which I can highly recommend. I don’t see how this film could make sense if you didn’t read them. And maybe that was the problem with the Cannes screening. Check out the new trailer for yourself after the jump.

You can also watch the trailer in High Definition. Southland Tales hits theaters on November 9th 2007.

    Hey Peter,
The quote in the trailer is “This how the World ends, Not with a Whimper, But with a Bang.”

not sure if you meant that or not but heh.

I think The Only way You Can Understand This Movie is if the trailer is 15 Minutes long not 2 minutes and 23 seconds long, and Pete I have never seen Donnie Darko but I think I’m going to rent it this weekend, if it’s interesting like this.

    Travis,
It’s worth checking out, it’s one of my favorite movies. It can be confusing to some people, alot of my friend just can’t seem to understand it. If you run into that same problem watch it again and pay closer attention, it can lose you if you space out for a couple minutes.

    i’m still stoked.
I think Richard Kelly probably needs a good editor.. I really thought the theatrical cut of Donnie Darko was a vastly superior movie to the Directors Cut that was later released, so i imagine this be same sort of situation here.

I have high hopes for this movie but I don’t like how the cast is straight out of 1999.

And, how does Richard Kelly make a living? I mean he’s only had one movie. Surely he has a regular job or comes from money or something right? Well, I guess he wrote Domino…

Awesome soundtrack. Like the last song. Lets face it folks, if hollywood would just allow for originality like this we’d be in a better place filmmaking wise. I’m tired of the superhero plots. Richard Kelly seems like a good hearted kid. I hope the best for the guy.

“But the truth is, most of the bloggers want to see a movie like Resident Evil 3″.

Are you saying most bloggers like bad movies? Because I certainly think that’s a very inaccurate statement.

    Nick,

okay, I should have clarified. I meant that most bloggers are interested in genre movies (as opposed to movie critics).

The trailer looks fantastic, but peter you are right it seems to be tailored only to people who have read the prequel books, unless its all going to be spoon fed to the audience during the film. Also it looks like Kelly has done a LOT of editing since Cannes. If it come close to being as good as DD, this will be one for the ages. PS anyone know the name of the song playing during the second half of the trailer?

Looks outta this world! Can’t wait!

Dwayne Johnson and J.Timberlake are surprisingly talented actors; but i’m still trying to figure out what Southland Tales was about… maybe it’s really obvious, i.e. life in Los Angeles is blurred, cluttered, flashy and not always meaningful.
