Juno

I’ve been ranting and raving about Jason Reitman’s new film, Juno. You’ve probably already heard me claim that it’s the best film of the year so far, or even “this year’s Little Miss Sunshine”. That the script, soundtrack, and performances are all top notch. And now you can see the film for yourself (or at least the trailer). While the trailer gives you a good idea what the movie is about (and even features some of the aforementioned great tunes), I think it undersells the film quite a bit (compared to my obvious oversell). The movie is already getting a 9.4 rating on imdb with over 125 votes, and a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 7 reviews. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Here is the movie’s official plot synopsis:

Ellen Page stars as Juno (also the film’s title), a whip-smart teen confronting an unplanned pregnancy by her classmate Bleeker (Michael Cera). With the help of her hot best friend Leah (Olivia Thirlby), Juno finds her unborn child a “perfect” set of parents: an affluent suburban couple, Mark and Vanessa (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner), longing to adopt. Luckily, Juno has the total support of her parents (JK Simmons and Allison Janney) as she faces some tough decisions, flirts with adulthood and ultimately figures out where she belongs.

this movie looks exactly like the korean film, “jenny, juno” wtf?

  2. Gravatar

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0453115/

“This is a comedy on a subject of a 13 year old couple who must hide the fact that there having a baby. The couple who are still in middle school (Grade 9) find out that there having a baby and now must figure out what to do.”

Similar, but not exactly the same. Doesn’t mean this film isn’t good though! I think it looks great.

  3. Gravatar

    haha this looks soo good
    i cant wait

    “aint no etch-a-sketch homeskillet”
    haha dwight

  4. Gravatar

    :) oo good news

  5. Gravatar

    looks very good.
looks like the type of film where i could cry inside watching it.
like you said, this years little miss sunshine.
    i cant wait.

  6. Gravatar

yay, another great Canadian movie! Well, my classification of a Canadian movie anyways [Canadian writer, director, and shot in Vancouver]

  7. Gravatar

Wait… people liked “Little Miss Sunshine?” I thought that was one of the worst movies I’ve watched, next to maybe “The Weatherman.”

Hopefully this movie will be nothing like “Little Miss Sunshine” and I’ll really enjoy it.

  8. Gravatar

I am glad that I met Jason and Michael in Toronto at the TIFF. I had a three minute conversation with Michael. He’s is a little bit ackward and certainly doesn’t come across as humourous, but he answered a lot of my questions and was very polite.

  9. Gravatar

    @Dave

Wow. I love The Weatherman. I love Little Miss Sunshine.
I feel like both are almost masterpieces.
I cant understand how you disagree.
Im not picking a fight here, its just amazing to me.

  10. Gravatar

This looks like a rip off of Knocked up with kids.

  11. Gravatar

Cut Chemist as the Chem Prof, nice.

  12. Gravatar

Wow, the movie’s not even out yet and it’s getting better reviews than Schindler’s List. How about we wait for this stinker to come out with these flavor-of-the-year cast members and actually evaluate whether or not it’s a good movie from the actual movie, not the trailer. As I recall, a ton of “great” movies had amazing, awe-inspiring, crying on the inside, trailers but ended up being worse than awful. And as a side note, I can’t stand the girl that plays Juno… a whip-smart teen she is not, rather an annoying 20 year old crum-bum with the most irritating voice I’ve ever heard. These “smart” movies are assuming their viewers are intelligent, but so far from the trailer reviews it shows quite the opposite.

  13. Gravatar

“this movie looks exactly like the korean film, “jenny, juno” wtf?”

wow, I was so gonna say this too. Paulie, Juno, lol

  14. Gravatar

    Spread the word guys!!

This film was great… I saw it in Toronto with Peter as well and loved it. It needs all the support it can get! Send the trailer around and make sure you catch it in theaters in December.

It’s really worth it, honestly, you won’t be let down and that’s rare these days…

  15. Gravatar

Let’s hope it doesn’t suck as hard as Little Miss Sunshine did. That movie was crap. I won’t judge Juno based upon the trailer, because Little Miss Sunshine certainly didn’t have a trailer that reeked of suck the way the movie itself, so this one certainly has the potential to be shitty movie-reviewer-fodder as well. Michael Cera and Jennifer Garner are good, but so is Steve Carrell and look how LMS turned out.

  16. Gravatar

Lord. What’s with all the LMS-bashing? If you don’t like LMS, get the hell away from films that fit a similar audience. If you’re not that audience, fine, but you’re an idiot to bash films tha simply aren’t meant for you. It’s analogous to being 40 years-old and bashing a kids movie. It says more about your lack of knowledge about yourself than it does about the film.

  17. Gravatar

Sorry to burst your bubble, guys, but “Jenny, Juno” is exactly like the novel/movie combo Skipped Parts. This film was released in 2000, five years before “Jenny, Juno,” while the novel was released way back in 1991. Juno, on the other hand, is quite a bit different than Jenny, Juno and Skipped Parts simply from the trailer.

Anyway, I recommend Skipped Parts. The book is fantastic. The movie: not-so-much.

  18. Gravatar

I suppose, It’s not the kind of film you can see with you girlfriend ehe :))

  19. Gravatar

Saw this film last night at Austin Film Festival. It was very entertaining, touching and thought provoking handling of the subject of teen pregnancy, adoption, and loving relationships. It was not as quirky as Little Miss Sunshine and much more enjoysble. Wonderful screenplay and great performance from Allison Janney among others.

  20. Gravatar

i just saw it today for a research and i think its a nice mixture of comedy and drama. i like the story, its a movie for everyone …

  21. Gravatar

I saw this film last night in Wimbolden.. Great actors.. reallyyyyyy funny!
    xxxxxxxxxx

  22. Gravatar

No, its not a remake of Jenny Juno!!!

simply a coincidence in teen pregnancy, but the plots are completely different, with the Korean film about the teens trying to hide the pregnancy

Read this blog post by Juno’s writer for further clarification

  23. Gravatar

i just saw the preview today when i was at the theater. it looks Ah May Zing!!! ill think ill deffs have to go see this with my friends when it comes out here =D

  24. Gravatar

Maybe I’m just terribly unsympathetic, but this looks very unappealing to me — and very Canadian. “Look, audience, here’s a bunch of lame people just like you! And you can laugh at their hilarious trials and tribulations over a totally preventable problem.” I’m not one for action flicks or contrived heroes, but I can’t feel any emotion for Juno or her boyfriend, both of whom seem to be stumbling through their lives without much foresight.

I would however like to learn to love such movies because my friends admire them. What does everybody see in this movie…??

  25. Gravatar

for those of you claiming it’s all “canadian”, the writer IS NOT CANADIAN

she grew up in Chicago, lived in Minneapolis for the last few years when this was written (it’s based in Minnesota).

  26. Gravatar

Very interesting! I would LOVE to see this!!!!

What is the writer’s blog address?

    I loved this part—-

**This is one doodle that can’t be undid–home skillet!**–classic!

  27. Gravatar

Oh Canadiangirl, Canadiangirl, so judgemental! :) No one has their act completely together, especially not teenagers, and movies like this are meant to be something of a caricature of culture. For example, Little Miss Sunshine was comically genius in making fun of the culture of mediocrity while at the same time gently encouraging us to become more and embrace the ridiculousless of the ride and expectations put upon us by the general public. Pure genius in its execution. I haven’t yet seen Juno, but am counting the days until its release here in San Fran. The point of movies like this is to, as I said, paint a comical caricature of reality while exploring some of the deeper issues underneath. Teenage girls really do get pregnant, all the time, and struggle with what to do about it and where to go from there, and it does not make them hopeless or useless individuals. They may be as you say “stumbling through their lives without much foresight”- but the reality is, we can plan all we want and life will rarely go just as we see it happening. There is so much beauty in the struggle of rising above the circumstances, or even mistakes you made- in one way or another, thats what most great films of any genre are really about!

“Rant” implies a negative response, just so you know.
I’ll let dictionary.com speak for me:

    rant
    –verb (used without object)
    1. to speak or declaim extravagantly or violently; talk in a wild or vehement way; rave: The demagogue ranted for hours.

I can’t wait to see the movie!

  29. Gravatar

it’s “jenny and juno” the korean movie … well isnt … cause it seem they have the same storyline. i bet it’s a remix into english of the movie

  30. Gravatar

It may not be exactly the same as the korean movie Jenny & Juno but they probably got the idea of the story from that korean movie especially it’s so ironic that even the title JUNO is somewhat a korean name.

  31. Gravatar

Wow this looks really good… anyone know when its coming out?!

  32. Gravatar

I saw a pre-screening of this last night…. I laughed out loud the whole time! I never do that at movies! The dialogue was so perfect and amazing! And that soundtrack?! Just truly beautiful and refreshing. I think it’s definitely on par with “Little Miss Sunshine”. Go see it right when it comes out!!!

  33. Gravatar

If this girl is so “whip smart,” why on earth is she getting pregnant at 13?
Am I the only one who sees how stupid that is?

  34. Gravatar

She’s 16, (which doesn’t make it right), but it’s not 13. And the condom didn’t work. Did you even see the movie?

  35. Gravatar

I, personally, adored Little Miss Sunshine, but I would prefer this be different. If the two are too similar, then it will lose some of that magic.
The story and dialog look to be nicely done and, despite what some have said, I think it will be touching, not overplayed or melancholy.
I am yet to see it, but I know those who have and are in love.
One night stand or long-lived romance? I cannot say, yet, but I’m fairly certain you’ll be glad that you saw it.

  36. Gravatar

    omggg. i

  37. Gravatar

The movie looks funny in the trailer and i can understand all the positive reviews. HOWEVER, I agree that it kind of looks a little too smart for its own good. Would parents, or a young pregnant girl ever talk or act like that. No!!, but i guess you accept the fact its just a movie and laugh along with what the writers povide you. It does look funny and i would go see it

  38. Gravatar

ur all nerds just watch the movie and talk to ur friends about it in real life ….. o wait u dont have any @:P

  39. Gravatar

    lol just kidding omg

    :)

  40. Gravatar

i guess il go see the movie **

  41. Gravatar

I will admit that this movie appears to be a teen version of knocked up, but why don’t you quit griping about it if you haven’t even seen it??? Who cares if it looks like a rip-off of some Korean movie??? All movies now are complete rip-offs of every movie and book that has ever been written so what does it matter??? You just have to learn to accept it for what it is and hope for the best, its not like its going to kill you to be dissapointed by a MOVIE!!!! Its only like a hour and a half out of your busy lives.

  42. Gravatar

☆★Well i need to tell u something about this story… some one copyed this movie from other movie.★☆ KOREAN MOVIE CALLED “JENNY AND JUNO” WATCH IT IN VEOH !!

  43. Gravatar

I saw they movie and I really have fallen in love! As a young girl I am very appreciative of the writer’s focus on how people talk today. Now I may not be able to come up with all the responses Juno could but the extremely casual, exagerated, verbiage loaded conversations are strait from the cafeteria. It really gave me hope for the future of film after a summer loaded with the usual blockbuster bunch.

  44. Gravatar

We’ve already established that Jenni, Juno was probably the inspiration for Juno. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0453115/ Yeah, I agree, just go see it. Whether you think it’s bad or good will just be another experience. I think Juno is Latin actually, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_(mythology).

  45. Gravatar

This movie is a cool i love it!

  46. Gravatar

this is just another remake.. hollywood has a few of those..i see them popping up all the time..theres that one about the girl hearing herself scream in her phone - thats ripped off from a japanese movie..

  47. Gravatar

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I have watched Jenni, Juno about 2 years ago. I did not like it. Overly cute and just have that same unrealistic feel that a lot of Korean comedies give.
On the other hand, I adored Little Miss Sunshine.
From the looks of the trailer, Juno maybe similar to J,J, but they’re definitely different. I doubt that the Korean served as inspiration. There are a lot of cases of teenage pregnancy after all.

  48. Gravatar

what is the name of the first song at the start of this film?

  49. Gravatar

In my opinion, trailer looked too flippant/”whip-smart” but movie was actually enjoyable. The lead, Juno, got on my nerves at first but I really grew to like her (you know, like a real teen). Jason Bateman and her relationship felt authentic to me. So did his relationship with Jennifer Garner. The same stuff happens to all of us, not surprising that there will be parallels in movies.

Also, hiding a pregnancy doesn’t happen in this movie.

  50. Gravatar

I’m reading the remarks and it’s just so typical. Why do people think that everyone has to be the same? We all like different things for whatever reasons.
You might really like this movie. It might not be your thing at all.
The critics and public receptiveness (i.e. box office receipts) will tell how most people feel, but in the end either you like it or you don’t, and nobody is going to convince someone that doesn’t like it to like it, or visa versa. So I guess this dialogue really comes down to entertainment of some sort. I’d rather watch a movie.

  51. Gravatar

I really enjoyed this movie. Ellen was outstanding!
However I felt that it was a movie made for adults.
It kinda glamertised the whole idea of being pregnant,
    and sent the wrong message.

The soundtrack was genius! I forgot about alot of the songs that were in the movie.

Overall I’m in love with Juno! And for those who are sending out reviews without watching it….SHAME ON YOU!!
Go watch the damn movie already!!

this video reminded me of Juno

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoZ1UQ11cYQ

  56. Gravatar

Movie was terrific. Made me laugh and cry…great take on a serious subject….mainly, the idea that the main character had more presence of mind and maturity in her situation and maintained her sense of being “16″ was what made this movie great. Terrific acting all around.

  57. Gravatar

Having seen both “Juno” and “Jenny, Juno,” I can safely say that not only are the two movies nothing alike, but also “Jenny, Juno” is possibly the worst Korean film I’ve ever seen (although the actors are adorable). The boy (while aggressively cute — I’d almost forgive the movie everything just for the chance to look at him for two hours) is unrealistically weak and passive, the ending is ridiculously pat and happy, the ENTIRE WORLD is totally supportive of them(except the parents) — their 14 and 15-year-old classmates stage a little wedding in the gym and you are supposed to believe that this solves a problem of some kind, it ends with everyone holding hands and singing (I wish I were kidding) — and most ridiculous part is how they keep showing this girl in her underwear, at supposedly four, five, six, seven months pregnant and going on and on in the dialogue about “What’s wrong with your stomach!” and “Oh I’m so huge!” when you can patently see that her tum is so flat she has a sixpack. Then there are long boring stretches where nothing happens except “cute” scenes like riding in a boat or taking purikura pictures. It is completely impossible to suspend disbelief — it’s the Disney version of teen pregnancy, complete with musical numbers. It’s irreponsible. It paints an insanely cute and rosy picture of teen pregnancy. After excellent Korean films about youth, like “Take Care of My Cat,” “Jenny Juno” is intensely disappointing.

“Juno” is far more like a younger version of “Knocked Up,” except less cynical and with more pathos — the laughs are sweeter. Plus, the solutions are realistic and the pain feels real. And it’s still not a ripoff — c’mon, how many hundreds of movies in the world have dealt with pregnancy? Call it a ripoff of “A Summer Place (1959)” then!!!

  58. Gravatar

i’ve seen juno and ellen’s performance was outstanding. there’s no other actress who can justify Juno the way she did. this is a brilliant film and i wanna watch it again! its soundtrack is playing over and over my head for like 2 days already.

it’s similar to that korean film jenny, juno — but it’s not a rip off or a remake. diablo cody said she was unaware of its existence in 2005 prior to Juno, which was just released last year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny,_Juno although i’m just wondering where these 2 films got “Juno” for a name?

  59. Gravatar

It is a movie that apparently is very good and pleases the form his(her, your) paper(role) is that the actris works

  60. Gravatar

well i haven’t seen the movie yet but i’m seeing it with some of my friends tomorrow! yay! it looks good! an i don’t think it’s an adult movie, me an my friends are 7th graders!

  61. Gravatar

My goddness, what can i say about this film. It’s Fantastic, it teaches teen pregenant People like myself the Way of Juno. In the Movie she’s great, I’m very happy that they got the right actress for her. Ellen Page is Amazing, she’s one of the youngest actresses to get nominated for theAcademy awards. (she’s a Unique actor.) Her co-star, Micheal Cera went very well with the film too. But We’ve gotta Thank Jason Reitman, because he made this film with his diriectory. I hope this movie is getting alot of awards because I truly believe that it does deserve it’s winnings and teaches alot of teens the way of Juno.
this movie will help alot for people who are in the postition as Juno(Ellen Page.)

  62. Gravatar

    this is the number one film of the century. so HA HA all you haters of the movie it iz AWESOME!!!! this is how i feel bout it—-> : }

I watched both movies Little Miss Sunshine and Juno and loved it. Both movies are about real problems in our society and how each family solves problems instead of losing themselves. I saw many parents with their teenager kids when I went to see Juno that was great.

  65. Gravatar

This movie Juno was’nt verry good. If we want to hear about a pregnant girl look around how about high school or Jamie Lynn Spears. And what was up with The moldy peaches?????

  66. Gravatar

Okay, first of all, jojo, check your spelling. “was’nt verry good?” Second of all, if you knew you felt that way about a pregnant girl in high school, why did you see the movie? I think that this was a wonderful movie that was entertaining, but at the same time didn’t make light of teen pregnancy. I think you should keep the bad comments to yourself..

  67. Gravatar

this movie was cool i liked it!!!! =D

  68. Gravatar

This movie was amazing. Now one of my favorites. Ellen Page did an excellent job in making Juno come to life. If you haven’t seen it, please do. It’s definitely worth it, “honest to blog.” :)

  69. Gravatar

If you watched this, watch “Jenny Juno” on youTube. It’s a Korean Film. This is way too similar movie to Juno. How could they make the SAME name of the guys with the STORYLINE as WELL?!!

  70. Gravatar

i assumed Juno was directed by the same guy that directed Knocked Up, which makes sense as how the same goofy kid stars as Juno’s boyfriend… but this is not the case, and the movie ended up having a unique style

  71. Gravatar

what the hell??? this is like the SAME exact thing as the kroean movie ‘Jenny, Juno’ which came out wayy before Juno. it came out in 2004!

  72. Gravatar

well i love juno movie and the first day i saw it i was so inpresive cuz its givig us a signe to not have kids and have a good life and go to schoo i love your movie juno
