John Rambo Sentenced to January Death?

John Rambo

Lionsgate has announced that they will release Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo on January 25, 2008. January is pretty much considered the kiss of death, where bad films go to die. Aside from Star Wars Special Edition, no other film has made over $29 million on a January opening weekend, and only five January releases have gone on to make over $100 million at the box office. In comparison, December offers six times as many $100 million+ ox office hits, with nine December films going on to $200+ million.

This doesn’t seem like a good faith move by Lionsgate. I could be wrong. Paramount’s move to release Cloverfield in January also seems very curious.

its possible the january date has some plot significance with cloverfield.

LOL THE THIN MAN ... that was great!!

Actually, Peter, this is a good thing. You're forgetting that Titanic made all of its money during that time frame. Nothing's out in theaters, so some high-profile films and event pics can actually thrive there.

"Rambo" is no longer the first name in action films, so it would have a hard time competing against PG-13 summer action films. It's a hard R action film ... this is perfct positioning for it.

Rambo will be awesome - no question about it...
  • Uh Ray, what was funny about what the thin man said? Cloverfield/Monstorous/1-18-08/Overnight/Etc. is supposed to take place on January 18th, 2008. The release date is significant to the plot, well maybe no significant but it has something to do with the plot.

The preview for "John Rambo" rivals that of "The Taking of Beverly Hills" (1991) for least enticing action film trailers ever. I really enjoyed Rocky Balboa and the first 2 Rambo films (never saw III). The new Rambo film looks ridiculous.

That is what is going to make this movie awesome. Campy, bloody, action filled - RAMBO is back!!!!
  • Who gives a shit when it's released. This movie is going to ROCK and I can't wait to see it.
