RobotchWarner Bros has picked up the rights to bring the classic anime series Robotech to the big screen. Tobey Maguire is producing the film, with plans to star.

Robotech refers to the scientific advances discovered in an alien starship that crashed on a South Pacific island. With this technology, Earth developed giant robotic machines or mecha (many of which were capable of transforming into vehicles) to fight three successive extraterrestrial invasions. At the time of its broadcast, Harmony Gold also launched Robotech through a popular line of comics to be followed by novels, role-playing games, video games, comic books, toys, and other consumer products.

I never really followed the series but I’ve heard that many people love the complex sci-fi plot. And it seems ripe for a big screen adaptation, especially coming off the huge box office of Michael Bay’s Transformers.

This could really work. It might even become topical. All the really deep fans (the ones who read between the lines)of the show know that protoculture is a metaphor for opium (flower of life, flower of death). Both the Robotech Masters and thier Zentradi Army were hinted at being drug addicts with the SDF1 as thier last place in the universe to find Protoculture (Opium). Given the recent unrest in the middle east and the growing drug trade that the US has unintentionally spawned in Afghanistan this movie could become a pseudo-political themed movie just like the last installment of Star Wars. Revenge of the Sith was seen as George Lucas giving his falstaffian opinion of the Bush administration and how they stole the US election and used 9/11 to start an unpopular war they couldn’t stop. Even Starship Troopers was seen as a statement about how unchecked fascism can currupt societies. I hope Maquire knows what he’s stirring up taking on this story line. There’s alot more to this Robotech stuff than just giant robots.

This is amazing. If done well, this will easily out-do Transformers. I just hope they give it the same treatment as the NEW Battlestar Galactica. It isn’t just a bunch of transforming robots. The robots transform by necessity, not just for gimmick. This a a very real war story that should be told in that light. This story really could bring people to tears. This is a great chance for a great message. I hope they don’t botch it!

Robotech is by far one of the greatest Anime series.
If Done right, it will beone of the top grossing films of all time.
But none of that Michale Bay BullS$%T!!!!
“Oh let’s make everything look diffrent change the story and characters.!!”

Leave it as is. A human story , ful of life, love, and conflict.
Robotech is not just about an alien invaision,or transforming vehicals, but about the human race coming together in a time of crisis, in neend of one another to defend ourselvs.
If any one does this movie it had better be done right.
