He-ManGrowing up a child of the 80’s, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was one of the shows I watched (along with many of the other series which are now pop culture nostalgia items on that VH1 show and in references on Family Guy). So it pains me to learn via our friends at IESB that the big screen adaptation of the cartoon series/action figure line is being handled so poorly.

According to Robert, “the current idea is to make Eternia here on Earth, kind of like a modern day Middle Earth.” He also painfully teases, “if you guys think that this Eternia on Earth stuff is disturbing, you should hear what the plan for Skeletor is!”

We haven’t read Justin Marks (Voltron, Street Fighter, Super-Max) screenplay, so we should probably should give him the benifit of the doubt. But from the information leaked thus far, it seems like they don’t understand why people liked the series. It’s the same thing that happens with most video game adaptations, and it was the same thing that ruined the original live-action Masters of the Universe film. Fans want to see all the creators and characters from their childhood in a new revamped Connan The Barbarian meets Star Wars type storyline. Treat the property with respect and the fans will come. If anyone has the Marks penned He-Man script (if it’s even exists in a script form at this point) please e-mail me.

^– Had 80’s He-Man underwear. I had a lot of He-Man toys, including a full on outfit complete with sweet sword, and a really cool Castle Greyskull complete with trap doors, moving walls, and a kick ass “maul” front gate.

awwww yes, those were the days…

    Is this a joke?

Are you seriously bemoaning the lack of “respect” for the storyline of a “He-Man” movie?

    Good god y’all.

People like this should be thrown into the fifth layer of Hell.. Really.. “Let me completely ruin the story and make my own version.. Hey worked for Rob Zombie and Halloween, and who ever directed that god awful “The Fog” remake…”

Peter, is it really RUINING the He-Man movie??? Isn’t it basically screwed at the outset?

    I mean, we’re talking about a freaking He-Man movie.

Conan meets Star Wars is actually Thundarr.

For some reason it didn’t surprise me that some folks talked about the Transformers movie “ruining” the “integrity” of that franchise, but never in my darkest dreams did I imagine anyone would make such claims about “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”.

Even when I was 13 my appreciation of that show was ironic at best, because it was so obviously a horribly cynical method of selling toys with only the barest relation to even being any kind of idea that could be “ruined”.

“But from the information leaked thus far, it seems like they don’t understand why people liked the series.”

It was because they were gullible little kids and pretty everything else on TV was just as crappy. THAT’s why people liked the series. That’s the only reason, man.

Sorry, was room full of oven cleaner vapors when I was writing that…

Yeah, it’s a He-Man movie. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be a GOOD movie.

I’ve read Marks’ script for Voltron. He’s setting it on Earth as well, rather than Arus. It seems Marks can’t get out of our atmosphere for some reason. He fundamentally changes the characters, and has the Lions constructed of junkyard parts.

The script for Voltron, by the way, isn’t very good. It’s a mish-mash of other SciFi movies. I expect the same of his take on He-Man.
