The Informers BookBilly Bob Thorton (Sling Blade) and Kim Basinger (LA Confidential) have signed on to join Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Austin Nichols (John from Cincinnati), Ashley Olsen (Full House), Jon Foster (Terminator 3) and Lou Pucci (Thumbsucker) in the big screen adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ The Informers. Sounds like a pretty well rounded cast, but what is Ashley Olsen doing out in the sun?

I love Bret Easton Ellis. You might not know who he is, but you’ve probably seen a movie based off one of his books: American Psycho, Less Than Zero, and Roger Avary’s drastically underrated adaptation of The Rules of Attraction.

Gregor Jordan (Buffalo Soldiers) is directing the movie based a screenplay Nicholas Jarecki wrote with Ellis.

The Informers was first published in 1995, a collection of loosely connected short stories captures a week in Los Angeles in 1983. The stories feature movie executives, rock stars, a vampire and as Ellis’ other works, various “morally challenged characters in adventures laced with sex, drugs and violence.”

This is the only Easton Ellis novel I haven’t read - but based on that information i’m very excited.

Now all we need is Roger Avery to make good on his Glamorama promise and someone like John Maybury to helm Lunar Park for an absolutely stellar book to film success ratio :)

I havent read Lunar Park, but I always got the impression that it would be impossible to make into a movie considering all the inside references to his other books. Am I wrong?

The majority of the book is a horror story that features an “alternate universe” version of Ellis as the protagonist. His work is referenced, and knowing this makes the reading experience richer, but it’s not essential at all. I think it could be distilled into a great film.

The book is definitely worth picking up too!

What a coincidence, I’m currently reading this book (only Ellis I haven’t read) and was just thinking what a good movie it could make. I’m skeptical about Thornton, but the rest are all great choice, I feel. Hopefully this will be a “Rules of Attraction” type-adaptation and not a “Less Than Zero” one.

This book is great. It references a bunch of characters from Less Than Zero (seeing as its in the same place and time), and has that kind of feel to it, though its mainly from adults that we gain perspective in this book, if I remember correctly. The ending was so fucked up. I hope all of Ellis’ movies get made, exceot for American Psycho and Rules of Attraction, which are good enough to be set in stone.

I want to become a filmmaker, and always thought Less Than Zero would be an incredible movie if done right. The only thing I liked about the movie from the 80s was Downey Jr. he was incredible, as usual
