World of WarcraftOur friend Paul at FofR sent us the following scoop on the big screen World of Warcraft movie which is currently in development at Legendary Pictures. The new details were revealed today at BlizzCon 2007 by 300 producer Thomas Tull, who stated that a budget of over $100 million would be committed to the project, which is aiming for a 2009 release. The movie will supposedly be set one year before the events of WoW, and will take place from an alliance perspective.

“We’re going to be looking for someone of Zak Snyder (300) or Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight, Batman Beings) calibre,” said Tull who revealed that the company is aiming for a PG-13 rating. “I can tell you that this is the one thing about running a studio and making these things that’s hard. You want to not compromise and have the right level of intensity. The story and the director’s vision is what’s ultimately going to dictate that. Personally one of my favorite movies of all time is Lord of the Rings, which has a PG-13 rating.”

I’ve never played World of Warcraft, and I have never quite understood the obsession with the game. I can tell you that I have lost friends to the fiction online world of fantasy, so it must be good. That said, I find it very disappointing that in a post-Sin City and 300 world, they would not choose to make this film the way it deserves to be: R-Rated. The action sequences should be bloody and intense. The language between the warriors shouldn’t be “PG-13″. The 9 million players worldwide deserve better than a watered down version.

I think, that as long as game itself (and all his previous titles) are Teen rated, there wont be any "watered down" version. Cos this game is played even by kids. But its sad, cos it have be potential to be nice epic saga with big battle scenes. And those that are not familiar with game will probably accept some violence and bad language (and even some older ones, that are familiar with it like me :o).

i disagree. all the games have had a "T" rating which is the ESRB equivalent of pg13 so i cant see them upping the ante to an R.
The LotR trilogy (another fantasy epic) was all pg13 and those were tremendously successful and well-liked.
Maybe if this was a property i cared about i would want to see them taking chances, but this is just cash cow with a pre-existing fanbase so my expectations for this are low.

Wtf? How would it be watered down if it's rated T for TEEN? This director really needs to play through, or at least read the script of Warcraft 1- warcraft 3. And a bit of WoW.
  • Pete
this'll be like every video game movie, crap.
  • Zac
Yup and it's all because of HOLLLYWOOD!
  • Meds
This movie will be insane. There is no watering down of WOW. As long as there is battles and a good storyline, this should be great. Hopefuly it wont have to bad language or it wont fit the time line that it is said to be in. It should be awsome though.
  • deviousz
i think it should be based on the HORDE's perspective.
  • gel
fight scenes must be bloody... Ü
  • zac
Is that why theres no blood in the game, and blood alone wont make it R
  • Ryucain
hey i agree with the thin man up there all the way.
and i think itll go good with alliance perspective but i hav nothing against horde heh
OH and is it going to be real ppl or animated? because i just dont think i could see real people wearing giant pauldrons that float on their shoulders.. but they could change that part i guess..
it will be the very most epic move since LotR trilogy I HOPE
i will be setting my standards for this movie VERY high. and i cant wait.
  • Quite cool but what is it about?

Just the same as with the Hitman movie. Kill the story for the profit.
I guess if we try to insert the original Blizzard cinematics to a proper environment we will get an R-rated film, not a PG-13.
I feel sorry for that. Hoped that at least Blizzard would handle quality as top priority.
