Could a Cars sequel be in the works at Pixar? JVPixarNews is reporting this rumor, citing an anonymous source who claims that Cars 2 is being developed in the Mouse owned computer animation studio. Earlier this year, Cars voice actor Paul Newman slipped that Pixar was making Cars 2. Newman has since announced he is retiring from acting, and no official announcement has been made from the Pixar group (although we have heard unofficial denials from within the company) . If Pixar were to go into production on Cars 2, it would probably become Pixar’s 2011 or 2012 release.
I would be really shocked if Pixar decided to make a sequel to Cars. Brad Bird outlined the companies thoughts on sequels at last year’s WonderCon while being asked about the possibility of The Incredibles 2:
But I think at Pixar, the bottom line is the story that you’re telling. And Pixar does not look at sequels as a financial plan. We feel we have a relation ship with the audience and that they believe in each movie we put out. We believe completely in every movie we put out. If I can come up with a story that is as good or better than that first film, then I’d love to return to that world, but it would have to be story first.
I can’t imagine that John Lasseter and company can come up with a compelling story worthy enough for a sequel. In my opinion, Cars was clearly the worst Pixar film to date (which says a lot since it still wasn’t a bad movie). I understand the southern appeal for a sequel but I honestly believe that Pixar isn’t thinking in terms of “appeal” and “demand”.

I agree: Cars was clearly the worst Pixar film to date. I want so see more Incredibles
or a related-movie like A Bug’s Life in the future, we don’t need more stupid Cars!

You are out of your mind!!! Cars was a great movie, I watch it all the time with
my kids and they love it as do I. I’m not sure where they would go with a
sequel, there really wasn’t much left as an opening for a sequel.
And another thing, how can you say a bugs life is better and more worthy of a
sequel than Cars. A bugs life was terrible and about as boring as watching grass
grow…..
Raul you seriously need to get a clue, squash the stupid bugs and build more
cars!!!

i am shocked that someone actually called Cars “worst Pixar movie”, on the contrary i think it is one of the most colorful animation movies so far, with the best cast and story line, my family just enjoyed it and would be really thrilled if the sequel comes out

My son and I LOVE Cars! Anyone that thought that The Incredibles was a better movie than Cars is off his nut - that was perhaps one of the most boring Pixar movies of all time. Cars is built around appeal for both youngsters and adults - watch the movie once just for the detail in it instead of the story and you’ll see what I mean. Take a look around you at all the Cars merchandise as well. A full year AFTER the movie and items are still selling beyond belief! Maybe the movie did not do so well in theaters - and I think we can thank The Incredibles for that, as it was so bad that I believe people were gun shy about another Pixar film - but for aftermarket release on DVD, it has done magnificent! A sequal would obviously do just as well, provided they break from the routine and take the story in a generally new direction. I loved both Toy Story movies, but believe they were an anomolie - take the Cars sequel a different route. Maybe ‘Trucks’? A little truck needs to get a delivery across country and has difficulties along the way? Spitballing here, obviously, but the point is that if Pixar wants a sequal, Toy Story is likely the wrong way to go - too much time has passed and the story has been done! Don’t spoil the effect left behind by two great movies (remember the never ending ‘Police Acadamy’ disaster?), and don’t harm the P{ixar reputation further with another, even lamer Incredibles. Cars 2 NEEDS to be done - if only for the audience’s interest. Further, with Cars stuff still selling at an almost unbelievable rate (don’t believe me? Check eBay…) the finacial interest to Disney/Pixar would make it MORE than lucrative. I can tell you one family at least that would be buying Cars 2 stuff at a rapid rate - and mine would be FAR from the only one!
Make the sequel and make it NOW - don’t fall down on the job like they di with ‘Weekend At Bernie’s’ where they waited 7 YEARS to make the sequel.

I also disagree with Cars being the worst. So far it has been the best in my eyes. It’s the only one I will sit through and the only one both my boys absolutely and totally LOVE!!!! They watch that movie at least once a day. I hope they come out with a sequel just so they can get more of their Cars fix. We saw all the others and there just wasn’t anything interesting or exciting about them.
I take that back. I loved Toy Story but in my boys eyes nothing matches Cars. Right now my littlest is whining because I’m on the computer and he wants to see more Cars.

i really love the movie cars but i dont think making a sequel would be a good idea. i say they should make The Incredibles 2

I also beleive that the Cars movie is one of the BEST that has been made. As a collector over 500 disney and Pixar movies, I have watched alot of movies in the last 50 yrs. My grandson wanted the Cars movie and we all have watched it at least 100 times or more. we have abt 6 copies at all of the relatives houses. My stepson is almost 18 and he and his friends have also enjoyed watching this movie. Its a great movie for any age. for his 3rd b’day he had a cars party and now for his 4th b’day he still wants a Cars party. all the kids love the cars.. we have collected everything that we can find of the Cars. Even his room is cars, he wants the bed but? anyway CARS2 would be great!! not just for the kids of the world but for the adults too. this is a great movie. Almost all of the movies have 2,3,and sometimes more sequels. so why not? there is alot that could be done for a 2.. sally and lighting Mcqueen could get married and have babies.. they could make Radiator Springs into a tourist spot w/ racing themes. Mater could get a girlfriend, who could be a hot pink tow truck that he hired to help out. oh the story could be endless.. please think abt this and make a CARS 2…. after all the lousy part 2’s and even 3’s that we have had to watch.. at least if they made this one anytime soon it would be a great hit.. me I would buy it no matter what as i am a collector of the movies and my grandson loves it.. I would bet the bank that all most all the kids in the world would also love it too… thanks Karen

Cars was made for kids aged 1 to 6. My son and I loved the Cars movie. I know grown men who enjoyed the movie. They left it open for a sequel.
If you do not like the idea of a Cars 2 do not watch it.
I could not stand Toy Story 1 or 2 neither could my son.

CARS is the best pixar movie made. I didn’t like the Incredibles. My son is nuts about this movie and never gets tired of it.
January 6th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Something to keep in mind is not only the quality of the film, but also the marketing possibilities. The sale of model cars from the movie “Cars” has been hot and from what I can see it’s still growing. My son LOVES the movie and, really, it’s one of the few I don’t mind sitting and watching over and over. I think it was very well done and much better than “A Bug’s Life”.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Of course there is a sequel to be made. McQueen needs to win the Piston Cup!!!! and kick Chicks ass is the process.
This is the best overtly boys disney film ever. My son loves it and Newmans “Not all my tricks Rookie” is genius embodied, as is Clarkson as the agent.
The animation is amazing and the lines are top notch! Bring on more CARS

I’d much rather have a Monsters, Inc. sequel. Anybody else with me?
February 5th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
My son and I have watched this movie more times then I can count and he has only had the movie for a month. My son is only 2 and has really took a liken to this movie. There are many possibilities for this movie and I myself can’t wait to watch it. I hope they do a Cars 2 and hopefully soon.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Are you crazy! The worst movie so far. That movie was great and had a good message. My kids and I must watch it 3 or 4 times a week. I can’t wait for the second one. HURRY UP PIXAR!!!
February 27th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
I like the idea of a monsters inc. 2 and anincredibles 2. But I LOVE the movie cars. It is THE BEST! I can’t belive that some of you think that its the worst pixar movie ever made, because its the best!!!!! I watch it all the time! so pixar, HURRY, I am really looking forward to seeing cars 2!
March 6th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Cars rocks! I love it, as do my kids (boy and girl!). It’s not a Southern thing. My kids and all the New York-based cousins LOVE this movie, and we know NOTHING about Nascar. Paul Newman was phenomenal.
March 7th, 2008 at 10:52 am
cars was my favorite and my son loved and still loves it! plus, we are missing a big factor here… licensed merchandise!! take a quick peek on ebay and see that cars has 10x the number of items listed as the next closest movies, which are “toy story” (which includes 1 & 2) and “finding nemo.” i love grandma kk’s train of thought. there is a lot they can do. i love everything pixar does, but i’m crossing my fingers for a “cars 2!!!!!”
March 10th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
my son is nuts about cars and would love to see a sequal. and last i checked ( which is often since i buy the stuff for my son too) the cars movie sold and is selling merchandise like crazy. so i hope dearly they do make a sequal and cant wait to see it
March 10th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
is it true that there is a cars2
March 10th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
that movie is sooooo funny i love it
April 3rd, 2008 at 12:27 pm
I have also enjoyed watching “Cars”. I have a three year old son who is crazy about “Cars”. He has all the figures from McQueen to Fred. I would really love to see a sequel. I was hoping that they were already working on one. I just can’t wait to see what Pixar comes up with next.
April 5th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Cars is the best Disney movie of all time, not just the Best, the Best of all time! You must be a girlie man to rank it at the bottom.
April 9th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I’ll admit that “cars” was one of those movies I was leary of seeing so we skiped the theater………. seeing it at home was a whole diffrent thing the movie was great the kids loved it and still do. It was stated above about all the cars stuff for sale and its still really popular why nont make a profit and make cars 2 personally I didnt think Bugs life was all that great so drivers start your engines Every little boy in america will love it
April 9th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
here it is! cars 2 has been confirmed!!!
“‘Cars 2,’ in which Lightning McQueen and his best friend Mater bid to take on the world’s fastest cars, is due for release in summer 2012.”

Cars is by far one of pixars greatest films my little girl loves it .as for the increadibles babies setting on fire is perhaps not the best thought out sequence for a kids film.
April 16th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I wouldn’t lend credence to anyone that criticizes the movie “Cars”…they’re just fishing for attention. The movie and resulting money it generated speaks for itself - no matter what some winless poser says. The last I heard there was a sequel planned called “Subways”…I don’t know how true that is. Either way, I’m sure they have plenty other films in the works for those of us that appreciate the genre. Young and old alike.
April 25th, 2008 at 6:32 am
To agree almost everyone else…CARS was a great Pixar movie. I thought the visual graffics, especially the sheen on each vehicle, was amazing. The story which seemed wierd on first viewing as grown on me & now I love it and quote it frequently, much to the pleasure of every small child I meet. I have 3 boys in my life who love it and watch almost every day, and even my husband who hates cartoons enjoys it.
The sequel possiblilities are endless. I’d like to see Doc Hudson’s early days. Or what brought Lightning to the Piston cup circuit…Or even how do things end up in Radiator springs…

Did anybody notice that Lightining McQueen’s voice is very similar to Kermit the Frog’s voice of Muppet Show?
