Many people have asked me, why is the new J.J. Abrams produced monster movie code-named Cloverfield? Residents of Santa Monica and Los Angeles might have some ideas. We set out to find an answer, and this is what we came up with. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot is located on West Olympic Blvd. in Santa Monica, California. The office is located just minutes away from the Santa Monica Airport and Clover Field Blvd. Santa Monica Airport was also originally called Clover Field. The first successful flight around the world took off from and returned to Clover Field in 1924.
Abrams has been known to use inside references as the code-names for projects. For example, earlier this month we learned that some of the on location production of Cloverfield was using “Slusho” as it’s undercover film title. Hardcore fans of Abrams’ Alias may remember as the Slurpee-type beverage that Vaughn offers to Sydney in the second episode of the series.
So there you go. That’s the best answer we have thus far.

If you remember “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, the name of the company trying to build the (santa monica/10) freeway thru Toon Town was Cloverfield, named after the old Santa Monica Airport.
July 13th, 2007 at 8:43 am
Not quite; the company in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” was Cloverleaf, and not Cloverfield.
July 13th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
yea, i just saw that part of roger rabbit and i was searching clover field, with the space intentional to find what i could on clover field, i researched jj abrams and read his biography on a film site and i saw the santa monica thing, but i thought it probably had zero relevance, but seems lkely now being the studio is on the street, im going to keep searching though
December 5th, 2007 at 4:42 pm
“Cloverfield” is the name that is used for a type of marketing campaign that companies use to stir up there product. Its kind of like “what’s behind the curtain” it keeps the audience wondering.
December 23rd, 2007 at 6:26 am
has no-one payed close attention to the trailer for this film
cloverfield is the make of handheld camera the film is shot on
a character from the film explains this
December 29th, 2007 at 7:24 am
It’s Godzilla.
January 1st, 2008 at 2:00 am
It’s not Godzilla. I don’t think Abrahms would do a sequal to a movie that although I thought was good, was not very well liked. It is a joke to most and I don’t think he would try to follow it unless he has some strange connection or liking towards it. Plus parts of the trailer shows virus problems like people in Hasmad suits and toxic signs. Godzilla would not cause this although you can see the classic three claw marks on the staute of liberty.
January 1st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Remember Godzilla was radioactive. Hasmad suits could be required.
January 1st, 2008 at 11:12 pm
O I didn’t know that well maybe so I still don’t think it Abrahms would do a Godzilla movie.
January 3rd, 2008 at 8:31 am
yes
its named after the street
im sure they wanted to change it but it caught on as the name.
Cloverfield has lots of huge offices , like The Water Gardens, lots of production there too. and post production. MTV is around the corner from Cloverfield.
everytime I heard cloverfield, I think of the production houses on that street
100 percent sure it was named after the street. and it just caught on.

yes there is/was an airport in california named clover field. They were not only an airport but also manufactured warplanes pre world war II.
“With World War II raging in Europe, Douglas realized well before Pearl Harbor that his plant was a sitting duck for an air attack. He didn’t wait for the government to protect him; he took the controls. Douglas asked his chief engineer and test pilot, Frank Collbohm, and a renowned architect, H. Roy Kelley, to devise a way to camouflage the plant. (Later, Collbohm would found Rand Corp. and Kelley would design its headquarters.)
Together with Warner Bros. studio set designers, they made the plant and airstrip disappear–at least from the air.
Almost 5 million square feet of chicken wire, stretched across 400 tall poles, canopied the terminal, hangars, assorted buildings and parking lots. Atop the mesh stood lightweight wood-frame houses with attached garages, fences, clotheslines, even “trees” made of twisted wire and chicken feathers spray-painted to look like leaves.”

I dunno, I thought I had a valid argument for godzilla but it fell apart. the info I found above is kind of interesting though.
PS the slusho! auto reply is hilarious.
my vote is for godzilla… hate it or love it.
January 13th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Actually, the original name was Cloverdale and some thought the writer said Cloverfield since they sound similar and Cloverfield is where you say it is. Just thought you should know.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
It’s a Godzilla like monster. I Tivo’ed one of the commercials and its head can be clearly seen.

post that tivo then
January 15th, 2008 at 4:15 am
hi
the CGI for this film was deliberatly seperated sos that no one would know what was what
we each got a little bit….but not the whole picture
i cant tell you what it is… but i can tell you what it isnt….it isnt tangible…..think the first season of LOST
and the fact that Abraams is an exponant of ‘the imagination is a far more powerful artist than any of you” school of thot.
points to the fact that whatever u think it is ..is what itll be
added to this is the fact that the toy firms have nothing to mould
if i say anymore i wont get paid
tara
January 15th, 2008 at 6:26 am
I agree completely. Abrams is my favorite writer and will come up with something no one would think of.
January 15th, 2008 at 7:28 am
remember how scarey and powerful “alien” was in 1977 u hardly saw the protagonist it made it very personal
January 15th, 2008 at 7:52 am
How long into the movie do yall think till we see what it is?
January 16th, 2008 at 12:31 am
bout three years …if his last stuff is anythin to go by ..if at all
a better question to ask is what do u hope to see?
January 16th, 2008 at 12:42 am
i mean everything ahs been done to death and the public are no longer awestruck by CGI..for instance the hardest thing to emulate in CGI is reality..even with the advances today its ..still sort of artificial
reminds me of the scene in The fly when jeff goldblum takes a bite out of his teleported steak and exclaims ” it tastes synthetic ”
and thats the whole point …
so……what would amaze and astound you ? a darker Godzilla ? doubt it …..a 600ft alien tearing lumps out of NY? been done,
imagine if u really wanted the mona lisa would u be happy with a print ..nope
but if ur mind was teased into thinking the most horrific monster u could dream up , brought to life .
seeing the results of horror are far more shocking than the act itself
i think ………..anyway JJ must be lovin all this …..
January 16th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
things aren’t always what they seem… cool
January 18th, 2008 at 12:18 am
I just watched the movie cloverfield and my expectations werent that high because the trailor didnt appease me but, I was wrong. The movie is filmed in first person mode of a video camera and at first its tough to follow but you get used to it. The caracters start out documenting people for rob (a main caracter) who is going away to Japan. The camera man is Hudd, Robs best friend. As the movie progresses you see a little bit more of the main monster and its no godzilla this creature drops these other mini creatures which look like spider type things. The story is they are trying to get to beths apartment to help her because she is trapped. On the way the meet all the creatures along with some very real battle scenes with the united states army. The ending is abrupt but, you can tell its the end and yes you do get a real good close up of the creature. This movie is incredible, very realistic, had my legs trembling was very scared mostly because the movie makes you feel like your there and you get to know the characters so well, the story gets to you and you feel every other thing thats going on not just whats happening to them but, to the city as well. In my opinion if this doesn’t get best movie of 2008, I think there might be something wrong but, I also think that the frightening feeling you get and the suspense could really only be achieved by seeing it at a movie theater because the sound plays a big part in its success.
January 18th, 2008 at 2:28 am
I remeber seeing the preview to cloverfield doing the summer and could not wait to see this movie. Well i have to say this movie is off the charts. My friends and i can tell you that cloverfield is one big ride that you don’t want to end. The first person view was a perfect way to shoot the movie because it was like a documentry, in other words it was like watching something that was really happening, and that’s what made the movie realistic, scary, & intense. But why was the alien so unbeatable?
January 18th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
clover filed was amazing me and my friends have seen it and i almost pissed myself the way the camera worked made it the scariest horror movie in my life. to tell you the truth i was not very optimistic about this movie because of the pg13 rating but i was amazed
January 19th, 2008 at 2:26 am
grr its sucked donky balls we thought the movie would get better it only got worse
January 20th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
This movie sucks hard! It looks like it cost 500 dollars to produce. $300 for the cheap walmart video camera, and $200 to train the retarded monkey with epilepsy to hold the damned thing. What idiot thought it would be cool to ‘re-do’ Blair Witch Project using a monster?
January 20th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
i just got back from seeing the movie and i must say that it was very good. If they didnt use the first person camrea deal it wouldnt be nearly as good. and that was nothing like the blair witch project. the monster isnt anything like godzilla. and u will see it and get sucked right into….but dont see it if u have virtigo cause the camrea is shakey at diffrent parts. the only thing that i want to know is where the monster came from and i think i want another full body shot of it so i can get a better look
January 20th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
This movie is a definite see at the theater… If you like action and a decent story line then this movie is for you. It will put you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next big fight or scare. The first person thing took a minute to get used to but once the movie gets started you will be impressed!
Great movie I recommend that everyone goes see it.
January 21st, 2008 at 6:16 am
ive seen the film and i can tell u theres gonna be a sequel /prequel…either that or we worked like bastards to meet deadlines for nothing ..
none of our stuff is in the damn movie !
January 21st, 2008 at 5:38 pm
man this movie was awsome it would be great to see it again but I did not like the biggining and I want to know where did this thing com from and how did it get on manhattan and how come they could not stop it even when they droped like 15 missiles on it but it was great
January 21st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
The thing is cool and does make a valid point about the airport and stree and w/e.. But when a producer names a movie it has to be relivent.. the reasonong for the title is that the fild of clovers ( 4 leaf clover ) is symbolic for luck. This can be viwed in two aspects 1 hud the main guy is extremely lucky escaping death several times on the other hand the city is in hell not lucky being that the title was created to be Ironic
January 22nd, 2008 at 7:09 am
cloverfield was shell company formed within paramont to keep the film secret ..but the name stuck …simple
January 25th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
OK. This sounds crazy but I just saw the movie again cuz I had a free ticket but check this out.
At the end of the movie it shows rob and beth on the ferris wheel and rob is filming towards the ocean away from coney island. In the background you can see a yaht and right before they cut away from the two lovers I could’ve SWORN I saw something splash into the water. It was a small dark torpedo like opject that made a splash. CHECK OUT A BOOTLEG AND LET ME KNOW IF I’M JUST SEEING THINNGS!.
January 26th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
I thought “Cloverfield” might have meant the name the military used for the remains of Central Park since they bombed the crap out of it and the first plant life to come back after the Earth’s been scorched is clover because clover can draw Nitrogen from the air.
January 26th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Wow, that sucked. What an absolute waste of 80-90 minutes. The first person thing got very very old, and I kept waiting for the character to just die so the camera would quit moving! The “catch” of the movie was obviously the Blair Witch-style filming because there was no developed storyline at all. I get it, there is a monster in New York, it’s been done. At least when done before, there is somewhat of an explanation for why it is there, and what it is doing. In this film. . . nothing. I literally saw the movie less than an hour ago, and I could not tell you the name of the main character, that is how little I cared about them.
The whole movie felt like bad viral marketing for something else. If this somehow gets tied into “Lost”, I am going to be pissed.
January 26th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Wow don’t complain about the movie like that. I mean personally I loved it but a lot of people didn’t like it. But really what were you expecting JJ to do. We are in the fourth season of LOST and still have no idea whats going on. You should have seen this coming, of course he wasnt going to tell us what the monster was. Besides it would have taken away the real aspect of the movie. No not the first person camera view but the mystery behind the story line in the movie and the movie itself. Not know is what made the entire experiance good.
January 27th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Seriously? I mean, sure, different people like different movies, that is why there are many genres. But to say that I should have seen that coming because of Lost is just crazy. Lost is a television show, with new episodes coming out on a weekly basis (present time excluded). Cloverfield was like walking in to a movie 1/2 hour after it started, and leaving 1/2 hour before it is over. Very unsatisfying to me, personally.
January 29th, 2008 at 8:55 am
OMG! That movie sucked big time and I laughed all the way thru it! The main highlite was when the kid in front of me threw-up. Mind you I liked the homage to the Alien movies. Kept waiting for some kind of different ending. All in all, great cgi, totally dead storyline ie very little, sucky all-round. And it looked so interesting too - I can’t believe I blew off I am Legend for this!
January 29th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Wait how did you blow off I am Legend its not even playing anymore or at least not where i am.
January 30th, 2008 at 2:26 am
Har har … I’m in Perth Australia; it’s still showing here!
February 2nd, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I enjoyed it very much. There has to be a sequel. Looking foreward to seeing it.
February 2nd, 2008 at 5:18 pm
It is supposed to be a triology. The next one will be the same timeline from a different person’s view. The third is going to be what happens after.
February 5th, 2008 at 7:18 am
I enjoyed the movie. The end was a bit sudden though.
Dave is right. There is definitely something landing in the water in the final scene.
April 26th, 2008 at 10:14 am
A “Clover field” refers to a battlefield, such as in the old 1960’s anti war song “Crimson on Colver”.
A clover field is also the place in the early years of flight that you would land a plane (prior to runways).

That camera must have cost alot of money, becouse it neever got broken and it survived a nuclear attack… and the filming was suppose to be like that.. The movie is all about tricking people into ‘This really happend’.. I think everyone fell for it and those who didn’t are the retarded monkey with epilepsy.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:57 am
Why “Cloverfield”? Apparently the title “This Movie Sucks” has already been taken by another motion picture production company…
Some redeeming points: the actor/character with the video camera, Huff adds some interest to the dialog, and the slutty and attractive ex-girlfriend Beth (she shows up at the lead character’s going away party with another pork stick in hand) is certainly nice too look at sans rebar, but poor Beth really isn’t seen through much of the movie.
I have also been thinking about the scale of Miss Liberty (i.e. the head from the Staute of Liberty) that lands in front of the apartment building — this computer generated image and/or prop seems entirely too small considering that visitors too the Statue of Liberty at one time were able to climb stairs upto an observation deck inside the crown.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:07 am
anybody reading the post above for info on the movie, dont. The guy doesn’t know what he is talking about.
June 9th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
if you get on googel and get on cloverfield and search around find a picture and see it was a fish,it had fins and gills. also if you remember /were paying attention, when they were in the sub way tunnels before the parasite attack hud menchend that scientists found a fish that was like that monster.

Amazing, some retard shakes a camera around and shoots some film and there are those that “ooh” and “ahh” over it. Simply pathetic, at least those with the preschool mentality are temporarily humored! It WAS sort of innovative when they did it with the Blair Witch Project, but this was merely a pathetic rip off of that style of shooting. Glad you liked it though, tells me volumes about you! LOL
June 16th, 2008 at 7:27 am
I thought the movie was pretty good, but you can always find someting wrong with the movie…..like the crowbar in the subway……why didn’t he keep it with him. But what bothers me, why did the chick who got bit by the little critters up and croak? Was this some type of “Alien” thing? Overall, and considering that the theme has been done a bunch of times, I’d rate this as an 8 on a 10 scale.
June 18th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Eric if it was an alien theme 1. the monster would have came from space 2. a creature would have poped out of that
girls stomach but her stomach swelled up and blew up. Anyway cloverfield was a completely awsome movie. I stayed all the movie including the credits and at the end rob (or at least i think it was rob) said help us then it rewindes and you hear “it’s still alive” then a few seconds later the monster/fish roars that scared the crap out of me. my casen went to buy 3 more ticketes for another cloverfield movie then when she came back she said that she heard the roar from the tickete booth.
