You may be checking your calendar, but I assure you, today is not April 1st. For years I defended Jason Lee. His performance in Mallrats was the level of a comic genius. He was given the chance to star in some films which turned out to be horrible. In-between he made a couple good choices riding shotgun (Dogma, Chasing Amy, Almost Famous). Thankfully, My Name Is Earl became a huge hit, and now everyone knows him. So why is Jason Lee trying to sabotage his career? First he signed on to voice the computer generated superhero dog in Underdog (ugh, that sounds like a winner) and now this. Before you say anything, yes, I know this film was announced back in March. But it only just now hit me, after seeing this new theatrical movie poster at Solace in Cinema. Click on the image to the right to enlarge.
In the movie, Lee plays the Chipmunks’ dad, Dave Seville. The singing group of chipmunk brothers (Alvin, Simon and Theodore) are computer generated. And you may be thinking: may be, just may be this could be good. WRONG. Director Tim Hill was behind such kiddie bombs as Garfield 2 and Max Keeble’s Big Move, while the writing team consists of the guys who wrote the Ice Age flicks, Robots and Big Momma’s House 2. Jason, why are you doing this? The Earl gig must be paying the bills, right?

It’s all about the screenwriters. Without them, the director has no material to work with. Seems like the screenwriters are okay. Therefore, I wouldn’t dismiss this because of the director.

Being a 100% chipmunk fan I must say.. I think this a wonderful idea! Though I will never understand those with a negitive output on the show or it’s history leading up to it, I had often wondered if the show would ever go 3D. In todays modern world, one would have to ask. Don’t you agree? I for one wouldn’t mind who plays the role of Dave. Just about any good actor would do. Jason Lee, Jim Carey, Matthew Broderick, Rupert Everett, heck I’d even pay to see the guy that played Wolverine from X-Men do the part of Dave Siville. The point is; kids aren’t going to care who the actor is. Their only focus are them adorable chipmunks and isn’t THAT what the show is about?

Melissa, would I need to be one or the other? Please define rascist? “racist”, it is a word that is very much misused in our language today. The more interesting thing about all of these Movies is the sociological impact that they have. They re-open the hard conversations about race relations that we have periodically. These conversations tend to be shallow at best, and plain misguided at worst.

Sorry to intrude, but I must say… Racist or not, that’s not what the Chipmunks are about. Now are they? It’s upsetting enough to know that people today just take too much out of content and twist it. And knowing that cartoons such as this one almost always end up getting the “butt end†of the joke. Take another cartoon for example. Rainbow Brite. The name alone can make even a grown man brake down with tons of racists jokes. Back in the 80s when Rainbow Brite was first introduced, thousands of people royally turned the cartoon upside down and inside out. Even to the point where it wasn’t even funny anymore that the cartoon stopped airing and products stopped being delivered in stores. The point is; word of mouth about anything means a lot. And so when something such as this new movie that HASN’T EVEN made it to the big screen yet gets bombarded with nativity it’s hard on the animators and directors. To decide or not to decide to air something all depends on the outtake. If people just took a step back and let some shows be, then after they’d been air (not before) make up a decision on whether or not to enjoy it. We don’t even know what the new Chipmunk movie will be about. All we have is a poster . No details and no other photos or insight. And yet already the show is hit with so much negativity that it’s not even remotely funny. But enough about me randling on. One person cannot change the minds of others. Only word of mouth can. And that’s saying a lot when you sit back and think about it.

I think this is a great idea. I loved the chipmunks when I was younger and as an adult I love them just as much and not to mention my Husband’s name is Alvin so it makes that much cuter!!

I thought movies based from cartoons from the past (80’s and 90’s)
were suppose to appeal to those who actually REMEMBER them. Looking at
the preview, you can clearly see that the movie production totally forgot us
20-30 somethings. Lookout, I’m about to spoil the movie and break a few
hearts, hopes, and dreams (i dunno the plot so don’t worry).
Okay, the chipmunks…they ARE CHIPMUNKS! I mean we have Alvin and the
Chipmunks, and we have Chip and Dale…They really got the two confused.
They made them tiny…like chipmunks. They are suppose to be at least thigh
high. They look like they are gangsta supposedly to appeal to today’s
generation, only outdated. We know the red cap, oversized shirt Alvin, not
hooded thug Alvin. And according to imdb.com… SKIP IF YOU DON’T WANT
ANY DISAPPOINTMENTS…looking at the cast lineup, there will be no Chippettes.

Not only does my niece, Alana DaFonseca, who goes by Alana D. sing the female rap part of the Underdog ( she mixes and channels her own stuff. She’s a singer/producer in NYC and making a killing) But .she’s done all the songs on the Chipmunk movie out this Xmas. She additionaally was in Mr and Mrs Smith…first, at thre front of the show, where the Smiths attend a neighborhood party (clearly below their standings) Alana is singing background music. Then, toward the end, when the Smith’s are being shot up in the sporting goods store, they duck into an elevator where you’ll hear Alana doing “Girl from Ipanima” elevator music That’s ironic, because her father, famous Brazillian drummer, Duduka DaFonseca. accompanied Astrud Gilberto on drums in the 60s when she made ‘Girl’ popular worldwide. Watch for this coming talent in Alana!

I was 7 years old when I first heard of Alvin, Simon & Theodore when “The Chipmunk Song” by David Seville & The Chipmunks debuted at Christmas in 1958 and I have been a fan ever since. After spending my childhood listening to The Chipmunk music, I still have all the original Liberty albums - in mint condition - and watching “The Alvin Show” on TV, I am looking forward to seeing the movie. I will reserve all comments on how good or bad the movie is until AFTER I see it and not base it simply on the movie’s poster. Actually, I think the ‘munks look cool in the poster and agree with an earlier poster, this is 2007, not 1958.
Ross Bagdasarian, the original David Seville, was brilliant. He created The Chipmunks (and was the voice of Alvin, Simon & Theodore) over a half a century ago and come this Christmas a whole new generation of kids will become familiar with ….
Alvin. ALVIN. ALLLLLVINNNNN!!!

The direction they seem to have went with this doesn’t really touch with anyone who can connect with it. Kids today (7-12) haven’t even seen the chipmunks on rerun. The teens won’t care to watch it either i’m sure. Try and dig around for the fully animated ‘Cuipmunk Adventure’ and maybe you’ll find it. Point is, they should have made this movie years ago when those of us (20-30 year olds) would have expected it. Theres just a huge timegap.
I don’t much care for the CGI computer animation at all. What REALLY would have been impressive would be to go the route of ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ and drawn them onto the cell. The gangsta-rats don’t strike me as a winner.
Even after all i’ve said… believe me I am a Chipmunks (and Chipettes… oh well) fan. Try and find the 80s movie. This one probably pale in comparison sadly.

Being the mother of the Chipmonk’s musical voices, my sister had the unique opportunity to see a private screening of the movie on Friday, 11/30. Her daughter, Alana D., sings all the voices, so even tho her thoughts are probably biased, she says the movie is going to be HUGE, SIMPLY HUGE!!! She was so stoked, she called in tears, terribly proud, urging me to see this thing (of course I will, she’s my niece, damn it) and take all my friends. Hope you guys enjoy it!

I really do not see what everyone’s problem is. I have been a fan of the chipmunks since before I can remember. And I am 31 years old as of now. Not to mention, I still adore the chipmunks, have a huge collection of the chipmunks, and have dedicated a website to the chipmunks. When I first heard of the new movie to be played in theaters I about jumped out of my chair. Family and friends believe I have lost my marbles. But personally I don’t care. Then I came on line and found sites like this one that really do not make sense to me at all. The chipmunks are suppose to be a kids all time favorite and a fan’s love. But here all I see are 90% of people with a negitave output. Recently I just went to the theaters and watched the new movie. Although I am not a critic, I must say…. The dirrector captured the chipmunks beautifully. And at almost a 100% to the tee. But there is the slight issue about their size. In the past the chipmunks were at kid size level. But in the movie they were tiny. At almost, life-like chipmunk size. Which in one respect I would have to say the dirrector was probably going for the “we’re the chipmunks” size with the “we’re kids” output. If you can get what I mean. So it’s kinda a tops up on that. But over all the movie was pure excelence. Now the issue on Jason Lee… He was a great actor. Played the role of Dave extremely well. He just didn’t scream Alvin’s name out like in the cartoons. The cartoon version, Dave had a more “I mean it” tone. But in the movie, it was more like “ummm yeah, okay.”. I’d have to say he needs to work on it just a little bit there. But overall he did an excelent job. Well that’s my take on it. Now that I’ve seen the movie and all. TAKE CARE EVERYONE!!!!

My 2-cents about “Alvin & The Chipmunks”: I liked the movie very much. It wasn’t “great”, the critics got it right about giving it, on average, two stars, but I liked it very much and so did the general public. The 2 star move has earned almost $200 million dollars. WOW!
I thought the weakest part of the movie was David’s (Jason Lee) romance with the girl next door and, overall, David should have been more agressive with the record producer and showed a little more love towards the ‘Munks. And they got Alvin, Simon & Theodore right; the right size with the right attitude, personality and charm.
Congratulations to Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. & Janice Karman, the film’s producers … and owners of the Chipmunks. Good job! Look forward to the sequel.
