We saw a screening of Transformers last night, but we weren’t lucky enough to see what people are now referring to as the trailer to JJ Abrams Top Secret Movie titled Cloverfield. Our friends at FirstShowing were lucky enough to be at a screening that showed the trailer. Everyone who has seen it so far are calling it one of the coolest trailers ever. And the best part, it’s for a movie no one really even knew existed. The trailer apparently ends without even a title, just “Produced by J.J. Abrams” and the release date “1.18.08″. You can read the trailer description over at FS, but everyone is saying not to. People are saying this is a trailer you really need to experience yourself.
So what is Cloverfield? It’s a giant monster movie (refferred internally as “The Parasite”) which is shot using home video cameras from the point of view of real people who are experiencing the attack on New York City.

When I saw this trailer, I knew there wouldnt be any title, It reminded me of the opening scene I wanted to make for a movie about WWIII, In NYC too!
Anyway, I watched the trailer and at the end, where the title usually is in credits, I believe i saw a name “robot” or something similar to that in the title. Im going to see transformers again, because it was so good, but Ill watch for the trailer again

Putting things together for this movie is kinda tough. First thoughts running through my head? Godzilla. Though that movie was ehh. Then the guy behind me says….it is a giant robot. Of coarse he would say that. Bad Robot flashed on the screen. :/
Then hearing the “Giant Lion” line from seeing the preview again….I was all types of lost. How could it be anything more than a giant lizard/monkey/alien/robot? They have done all of those though. Thinking about the code names “Parasite” for the creature itself? This so called Lion (if heard correctly) could it be the Chimera? I’ve heard of Chimera parasites before….so I guess it could very well be a lion. Which when I first thought about it, it could be dumb. :/ Then again…a giant Chimera could be pretty amazing in some respects.

That grainy low-quality film style is great for a trailer, but it’s gonna get hard on the eyes after 2 hours of watching a film. Kinda like that grain filter they stuck on 300 the whole movie. Bugged the bejesus out of me.
Another thing… I’m so bored with New York getting destroyed. Seeing the head of the statue of liberty rolling down a street didn’t get me out of my seat. Hell, New York getting destroyed in any context in a film doesn’t get me out of my seat anymore. Maybe they could destroy Chicago or Los Angeles or some other city for once.
It’s like blowing up Tokyo. Not interesting.

See, I’m not so sure that the actual movie is going to be entirely from the hand
held camera point of view. I think the hand held camera approach was done
specifically for this teaser trailer. Most films that are made exclusively with hand held camera footage use it as an artistic method for minimizing certain low
budget risks that are taken in production. Whether that be poor acting
(ala Blair Witch), shoddy set design, or any other technical aspects of the like. Clearly, this film is not lacking on any of these levels, in that it is a major
motion picture from Paramount, and is not independently made. It would be
a very bold move indeed to spend so much money on a film that looks to be a special effects box office smash, only to diminish the quality of it by filming it
entirely on hand held cameras.
I don’t know. Until there is some credible source from Paramount or any other publication, that is so far remaining very tight lipped about this project, I
believe it is just a bit premature to start drawing certain assumptions from the
teaser trailer and throwing them around as fact.
Though I would be shocked, I would not be disappointed if the project actually
IS entirely shot with hand held cameras. It does seem a waste and a marketing risk, financially speaking, though I do believe the project is in very good hands with J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot productions. I will assume that they know better than I about such things. I’m hardly ever ready to completely embrace the creative judgments of some filmmakers until I have seen the vision they have tried to achieve, and in most cases (i.e. M. Night Shymalan films) I am very delightfully blindsided. Abrams and crew have done a tremendous job with LOST, and I can’t wait to see what comes next from them.

everyone has a good theory going and they all sound exciting and fair. it IS too early assume but i have my own thoughts too…first thing i thought about,is that it WAS a transformers 2 trailer,only for these reasons:
a: the deceptacons were buried at sea. hence the statue of liberty head flying through the city.
b:at the end of transformers,one of the deceptacons escapes into the sky.
c:the still in new york

While don’t have any new info to supply I would just like to compliment the production company for some very creative advertising. The teaser certainly left everyone in our theater curious… but at the same time the general consensus in the theater was anything released in January is going to be sucktastic. This being the creator of Lost can only mean he’s being mysterious for the sake of being mysterious. It’s going to backfire.

I think its something of a follow up to the Godzilla movie with Mathew Broderick. The fact they are call it the “parasite” kind of supports it as in the movie the mention Godzilla being something of a parasite with its appetite and birth rate. Plus the roar made me think of that movie as soon as I heard it, and I havent seen it in over 15-6 years.

Look there are clues. The guy Rob is leaving for japan the next day. Its a japanese themed party. The television reporter says there is a “thunderous roar” . Outside someones says ” Its a lion, its huge”. Voltron fought parasite monsters. If you look on wikipedia/voltron the movies are set for the same date. I don’t know how reliable wikipedia is but it says that “there is a teaser in theaters right now playing, (such as before transformers”. Either its a genius promotion of Voltron or its a gay ass trailer for a monster movie filmed with digital cameras. also there is a symbol on the bottom left of the credits and i wonder if anyone can tell me what that is.

ive seen the trailer twice at the theatre and about 10 times at home my best guess is this being a “parisite monster”, and the fact that the statue of liberty being destroyed meaning these thing(s) are comming from the sea. also that their are mass amounts of people running screaming, building crashing down, and that if you listen very closely you hear a very load roar of some kind. this all points toward A) Godzilla 2008 or B) RAMPAGE the movie. (the roar being either godzilla or the giant lizard from rampage) Unless the writers have gone completely off the board and created their own monster. (which obvviously makes anyones guess completly incorrect.

No way would a major movie studio release a Voltron movie and film the entire thing with handheld personal video cameras. That doesn’t make sense. A movie like that would be filmed like Transformers and would be a summer blockbuster, not a January release.
A Rampage movie would be cool, albeit silly, but that could be cool.
I don’t believe that this is a Godzilla movie at this point, but I would be so freaking stoked if it was. They need to make a good Godzilla movie to wash the taste out of our mouths from the 1998 one. Ugh.
And I can guarantee that it is NOT Transformers 2. The fact that anyone would consider that is only mildly retarded. Like they would have a teaser up already, a different producer, no Michael Bay, and that it would be filmed in an entirely different way. The idea is moronic.

As much as I would love it to be an epic Godzilla movie, I don’t think it is.
Secondly, someone mentioned (possibly on another page) that the full trailer for this movie would show up with the Lost season premiere. A great idea but unlikely because Lost is returning in February. Unless the release date for ‘Clover’ gets pushed back of course.
Either way, I can’t wait for this movie and the teaser has done an amazing job getting everyone interested in it. My guess is that it won’t be long before the trailer starts getting questioned in more mainstream news.

Appearantly there’s a new Godzilla movie coming, but it’s a 3-D version. Which would in itself be potentially badass if done well.
However, this trailer in no way resembled any 3-D movie I’ve ever seen so I’m inclined to believe it is not Godzilla.

“Destroy all Monsters” still looks like the best bet. The orignal movie came out in 1968. This year marks the 40th anniversary. As for the January release date. Studio’s have been gambling on odd release dates the past few years. Each trying to catch each other off thier game with weak showings. They know a good movie can rake in DVD and mechandising sales beyond ticket sales. Plus a few weeks of good buzz could make it a good “Date Movie” for Valentines day.

Just a thought… Could we be looking at a HALO movie… When Univerasl/Fox canned the film in 2006 Paramount was one othe the other studio’s the film was shopped too. The orignal release date for the film under Universal/Fox was Summer 2008. If they fast-tracked production overseas we could be seeing a bad HALO re-imaging. I hope not. What about a prequel for “Battlefield Earth” when the Psychlos attack. Or “Reign of Fire” which really deserved an overdone prequel with Dragons taking down civilization. This is all just speculation.

I’m still putting my vote on Godzilla. If it was some brand new monster, why would they be so secretive about it? The secrecy leads me to believe that they’re just waiting to spring it on us, the unsuspecting public. Kind of like before they announced Batman Begins. Their project title was Intimidation Game so that no one knew what they were working on. Then BAM, a new Batman movie. This seems like the same exact thing.
I mean, consider the clues in the trailer (if they were, indeed, clues):
1. Party for a guy who is moving to JAPAN.
2. You hear a ROAR, see stuff exploding, and someone yells, “It’s alive!”
3. They are listening to Wolfmother at the party. The song’s lyrics say something about a “field of clovers” and their album cover has a giant lizard on it. This project is being called “Cloverfield.”
4. As I stated above, the extreme secrecy of the project.
JAPAN + ROAR + GIANT MONSTER + GIANT LIZARD = (hopefully) Godzilla. Clearly this is all fanboy speculation, but if we’re going by clues, all the clues I see are pointing to this.

I’ve got a question! If leapfrog cannot defeat Falconian in a daring battle of wits, then how could Tiger Claw even consider destroying the whole zalconian race? Do you think it has anything to do with Stronstorm’s love affair with Poision Arrow? I think that is preposterous! Most indeed it is Skyknife who stole the megaton of nuclear waste! Has anyone read the Spectator by Anonymous! It is classical! Pure Genius i say! I’ll be darned if anyone disagrees with my unbeatable theory.

well whatchyoself, if the toaster has an extra toaster expansion pack attached to the outer cord of the inner nebula, than the toaster could easily toast another piece of toasted toast without over toasting it. In the matter of fact, the toaster could theoretically toast itself if the toasted toast could none the less toast a toasted toaster with no recent experience. (if ya know wat i mean-chicachicamona! woo-hoo!)

IM just throwing ideas out right now…but…..
IF they say its Alive, doesnt it mean that sumthing that was previously thought to be dead or not capable of being alive is finally alive….I really dont know….ANd I will be so mad if its a Godzilla movie….I want it to be something different….and the idea of the whole movie in handheld cameras is GENIUS….I have always wanted a disastor movie to be shot like that and it will finally happen…..and since it is in handheld…we will connect more with the characters and the actual destruction that they face.

Ah another little thought here guys. Wasn’t the Film Remake Rights for “The Host” sold to Universal/Paramount in 2006. Think of the working title Parasite - Host. The Host was set on a monster emerging from water near a large city looking for Human snacks? The Raymond Burr reference would work if the group from Robert’s Party gets trapped in the city while the Monster runs amok. Think of the way War of the Worlds remake (also from Paramount) was shot from a perspective of a Divorced Mans family on the run. The Camera could be handed off to different people within the group during the course of the film telling each person’s story.
We do know Bad Robot Productions was given the go ahead for a reimaging of Star Trek. But they were also given a mandate to produce a given number of Movies for Under 25 Million for the studio. This film could be one of first Low-Budget films they coughed up for Paramount to keep thier new gravy train flowing.

After watching the trailer and reading the comments i picked up a few things.
I think it is a new godzilla movie under wraps, a continuation to the american
one.
1. What kind of monster besides godzilla can do that much damage and
manage to the knock the head off the statue of liberty.
2. When the guy said “its alive, its huge” hes not talking about some new
monster but the return of the giant monster that already terrorized nyc. Everyone
seen it die on the news while on the bridge.
3. Just the tone of the movie: Fireballs, panicking people running done the
streets, heavy metal objects being thrown around.
I honestly think they are trying to make up for the failure of the first
americanized godzilla. Its a good idea to keep the name under wraps.

Ok I saw Transformers again and its definately RYAN KEY from YELLOWCARD in this movie…not the star but I saw him at the party a few times. I do agree it could be Godzilla…I agree with moneyman3 has a good point.

How can we be sure that it is a monster movie. maybe the people are running from a terrorists attack or something like that. A huge bomb could cause the same types of things we saw in the trailer. maybe another nation attacked us and are invading after a bomb attack.

“Giant robot lion” all i can say is it sounds like we may have yet another old school

PEOPLE, THIS IS NOT *NOT* A VOLTRON MOVIE. Good lord. I admitted that my Godzilla theory was simply fanboy ranting, but do you think if they were making a Voltron movie it’d be a low budget film? Of course not, they’d be milking it for all its worth by making it another Transformers-ish type of production. And based on the general feel of the trailer, it is obvious this is meant to be a horror/suspense type of movie.
Also, if this does end up being a Godzilla movie, it will most definitely NOT be a sequel to the 1998 American film. No way would they make any connection to a film so commonly seen as awful.
I seriously can’t believe some of the theories I’m reading on here. Be logical, folks. Sheesh.
And to make things perfectly clear: It is Bad Robot Productions. This is not a robot movie. The guy clearly says “It’s alive!” not “It’s a lion!”
I hope its a new Godzilla movie, but I can accept that it might not be. A new monster would be awesome, but a realistic, gritty Godzilla movie would be so cool.

It says right above that it’s called “The Parasite” movie it’s probably about a giant cochroach that wasn’t killed in the years of the dinosaurs. Probably stupid. Sorry!

I disagree… think about if you were to come Toe-to-Entire self with a creature so large it was making the skyline seem insignificant… randomly yelling “it’s alive” is a believable response without it having to nessecerily being something we wouldn’t expect to be living (inanimate object) but more a cry at other-worldly sights

Could it be a modern day Chuthulu adaptation? Chuthulu is a giant octopus/ dragon/ humanoid monster that resides in the ocean. That would be VERY Lovecraft esque to focus more on a group of ppl with a camera totally wigging out and probably going insane from the gravity of a real life giant monster attack. Cthuthulu came from outer space a bazillion years ago and every Chuthulu artifact from the books had weird hyroglyphics on them. Seriously I doubt its Chuthulu but that would be sweet right? Hey, it makes more sense than a Voltron or a Rampage movie.

Yes, Ethan Haas is tied in, Wiki and /film both confirmed it today… but “confirmation-confirmation” as in actual confirmation is hard to get when your studeo denies you’re discussing a movie that exists…
trying too hard? I don’t think that’s possible when a PR company wants to play games with an audience for a month…
I still have doubts, but from what I’ve seen, it’s the closest fit yet… plus Cthulhu Mythos movi would probably be too cool for sanity…

A Few Things:
1. ‘The Class’ is a real sitcom that used to be on CBS.
‘Ethan Haas’ was a character but is, in my mind, not related at all.
2. Is Ethan Haas really related to ‘Cloverfield’?
3. What is the significance of August 1, 2007?
(shown at the end of puzzles on EthanHaas)
Also, a few people have mentioned the wolfmother song as evidence towards a godzilla movie. Wolfmother is not involved with some viral movie marketing conspiracy.
Finally, has anyone thought that maybe 1-18-08 is not the release date but the setting of the movie or something like that? It seems to me that a movie said to be in Pre-Production State (IMDB) would most likely not be released that soon. But its just one mans opinion.
