There are potentially two big movies opening this week. Last week’s #1 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer made an astounding $58 million, so it has a chance to do very well again in its second week. Will either of the new movies pass it by? Read on to find out:
1. Evan Almighty. The answer is that one of them will. Bruce Almighty was a huge hit. It made $67 million its first weekend on its way to a total Box Office of $242 million. Will the sequel do as well? I think it has a chance. Right now, Will Farrell has passed Jim Carey as the most bankable comedy star in Hollywood. But after the huge success of The 40 Year Old Virgin, as well as his starring role in NBC’s The Office, Steve Carrel has a chance to challenge Farrell down the line. He will certainly get a big boost from Evan Almighty which will be a huge hit and will get off to a great start with $50 million.
2. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. It started out with $58 million (about $18 million more than I predicted). It has gotten better reviews than the first Fantastic Four, but still they aren’t that good. It should have good staying power but it will drop down to $25 million which is still very good for its second week.
3. 1408. With comedies like Evan Almighty and Knocked Up, and action franchises like Spider-Man 3, Fantastic Four, etc., someone might just be looking for something different. That something could very well be the latest movie adapted from a Steven King story. 1408 definitely has a chance to be a hit and reach a different audience then all the other big movies out there right now. It has had a ton of commercials as well. It will make $22 million.
4. Ocean’s Thirteen. This has had a good run so far with over $70 million in just two weeks. Last week it made $19 million and I don’t see it having that great of staying power. It will drop down to $10 million because of the stiff competition.
5. Knocked Up. I said when it came out that it would be a sleeper hit and I have been proved right. It is just under $100 million in four weeks and this week it should pass that mark by making $8 million.
I want to conclude with a special shout out. Among the various films opening in limited release this week, including You Kill Me, Black Sheep, and Broken English, there is a movie opening up in San Francisco at the Embarcadero Theater called Colma: The Musical. It was directed by a local Bay Area filmmaker, Richard Wong, and produced by another Bay Area filmmaker Paul Kolsanoff. It will open in July in Los Angeles and New York, so keep an eye out for it down the line in those markets. But for now, if you live in or around San Francisco and want to support local filmmakers, check out Colma: The Musical this weekend at the Embarcadero.

So if I understand it right, besides 1408 and Knocked Up, there are nothing more than franchise movies at the top of the box-office. How creative is Hollywood during the summer.
