 King of Kong

Picturehouse has released the theatrical movie trailer for The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (poster). I, like many of you, grew up during the last few years of the so called Arcade revolution. Kids flocked to the local bowling alley or video arcade to play the latest and greatest video game machines. At Sundance we saw a great film on this era, and more specifically, the champions of this era, called Chasing Ghosts. Well it looks like The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters might be even better, video game champion turned hot sauce mogul as he must defend his title as Donkey Cong champion against a middle school teacher. This movie has everything that is needed to become the next geek cult classic. New Line has already greenlit a feature film adaptation based on this true story.

Check out the trailer after the jump. The movie hits theaters on August 17th 2007.

    That sucks!

I’m surprised they would even make a movie like that. It’s the geekiest thing I’ve ever seen.

    > That sucks!

Wrong. I’ve seen it and it rules. Best movie I’ve seen all year in fact. Sony should take a hint and stop dropping a quarter billion dollars making half-assed movies like Spider-Man 3 because the enjoyment factor of this film positively stomps it.

True, when the blockbusters fail to entertain documentaries
are a good place to turn to for entertaining stories & it’s
always interesting to see how peoples passions affect their
    everyday lives.

    To Chris.You’ve already seen it?

i saw it at a film festival, and this movie is amazing. such a great story, even if you don’t like video games the characters are so engaging. i hope it does well this summer and gets a wide release

That Donkey Kong “champion” - what an incredible egotistical doofus!

Everything about that dude makes me laugh:
    1. his clothes
    2. his hair
    3. his inflated sense of ego

Perhaps that guy will visit the 21 century some day…

Does anyone know where I can get a DVD of king of Kong before it comes out?

This movie is perfect for most of the posters on this site. You live in your mom’s basement and play games all day… voila… it’s your time to shine boyz!

Yes. It played at the Seattle International Film Festival on May 28. Steve Wiebe (the Donkey Kong record challenger in the film) lives in Redmond, WA and was in attendance with his family. They went up on stage for a short Q&A afterwards.
