I must admit, I haven’t heard of D-War until now, but seeing the trailer was enough to sell us. Hey, what can I say - we’re easy. D-War, which stands for Dragon Wars, is a monster movie directed by Korean actor (and comedian?) Shim Hyung-rae. FilmJunk claims that the “movie took almost 6 years to complete, and it was created with a worldwide audience in mind.” If you like the Godzilla films, Jurassic Park, or the recent Korean horro film The Host, check out this new trailer after the jump. We also have a look at the film’s poster art, thanks to our friends at TwitchFilm.
Now my only question is: When can I see this movie? The film is set to open on 1,500 screens in the U.S., making it the largest scale opening for a Korean film in the states. Originally the movie was scheduled to hit theaters in Korea on August 2nd, and later that month in the US. But we’re now told to probably expect a US release in Late Fall 2007.
You can also check out this package of clips that was released two years ago:

Very nice.I like The Host very much. It’s a wonderful Korean movie.

Not my type of film from the looks of it, but you gotta respect those effects and extensive amount of work… six years?
June 14th, 2007 at 10:42 am
Looks pretty good, wonder what they did that it took 6 years to make. I’m sure
the D in D-wars does not stand for dragon cause it looks like a giant cobra and
it does not seem to be that many creatures.
June 14th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
the imagery of western and eastern dragons are different. western dragons look like elephant with wings while eastern counterpart look like snake with……. mini limbs…. no idea how they fly but boy do they fly…. haha
June 18th, 2007 at 4:06 am
actually, it’s not a dragon yet.
it’s a creature before becomming dragon.
you can able to understand what i mean after watching that movie .

Just to add on this comment:
Does anyone know how a dragon look like when it is in its infant?
If you know, you now understand the real story of a dragon.
One hint: the dragon-to-be doesn’t have a wing.

July 23rd, 2007 at 6:40 am

CGI is great like Kingkong or Load of the ring.
but story and acting are big problems.

July 24th, 2007 at 2:09 pm

July 24th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
I went to see “The host” in the theater in timesquare, NY
and liked it very much. As the review states, I will go see this movie since I liked “the Host”. When is it anywayz?
July 24th, 2007 at 4:04 pm
FYI.
The name of the creature is “Imoogi”. It wants to be a dragon by eating
dragon ball based on Korean legend.
August 1st, 2007 at 5:57 am
FROG, that creature is not Dragon yet in the movie. According to Korean legend, that creature,
I-Moo-Gi will be dragon when it got the Yeo-Ei-Joo.
By the way, people say who they watched, it is pretty well made especially last seen, the big fight’ is great.
the one of reasons why it took 6 years is… the had financial problems.
August 2nd, 2007 at 12:31 am
Eventually a Korean movie director creats a fantastic fantasy movie!
anybody want more information? visit here, http://www.d-war.com

i can’t wait to watch that movie until september, D-war gave bomb-like effects on me and my movie-addicted folks.
the only problem lies on the senario. Still it is one of the two thumbs up this year.

Looking forward to watch this movie!!
Can’t wait~
August 3rd, 2007 at 2:02 pm
awesome
August 4th, 2007 at 5:31 am
disappointed.
i anticipated the thrill of watching the real dragon and the real scene which can give me awesome feeling.
computer graphic was not bad. but the actos and details left
deep vacancy in film lover’s mind.
but although the director had such financial problems
he made the big film at last
i admit his great efforts anyway.
August 4th, 2007 at 6:02 am
looks like a big snake to me, they shoulda made it a
dragon or some other type of monster instead of a cobra, but
it does lookinteresting and I will check it out
August 5th, 2007 at 7:08 am
I saw the movie just tonight. If the effects took six years, it doesn’t show. In addition, I haven’t seen such terrible acting since…since…NEVER. The story it is based on is interesting, and this could have been a good movie. Very disappointing.
August 5th, 2007 at 9:24 am
I am Korean. As many people know, this movie is released at August, 1.
I came here to look opinion about foreigners, But it is not opened yet…
So, I will tell the most precise information.
In korea, there are too many opinions about this movie.
But the major opinion is ‘It was really great on CG. but the acting and the CG wasn’t good.’ And i agree with this.
BUT, as korean, i am proud of this movie. Because it’s CG can be compared with um.. the lord of the ring?, yes. Just look at it.
CG is really, really fantastic. I was impressed about it. You can find out why this movie took 6 years to make.
August 5th, 2007 at 9:35 am
Gary?
Excuse me but you live in Korea? Ilsan?
I have teacher with same name like you!
August 6th, 2007 at 4:53 am
This is the movie I can’t forget. It’s fantastic and thrilling….
Each scene is spectacular and interesting.
It is a wonderful fusion between eastern and western culture.
Last week I watched the movie with my family, but I’m planning to watch once more with my friends. Because the wise man knows what the essence of science fiction is…
I hope you can’t miss this flim.
August 7th, 2007 at 11:36 am
I am Korean myself, and to describe this movie in a short sentence, it’s “as good as Transformer.”
Top-notch CG and music/sound (same music director as in Transformer, CG is all Korean technics), but don’t expect a storyline of, let’s say the LOTR.
I still think the storyline is better and more complecated than Transformer, but you need to be familiar with the oriental concept of reincarnation (born again in later generation?) in order to fully understand the plot.
Anyways, it’s not a perfect moive for everyone, but a great one for SF/CG lover like myself.
August 7th, 2007 at 3:56 pm
I don’t think it took him entire 6 years to make. What I heard is a bit different. He came to hollywood 6 years to learn how hollywood makes blockbuster movies. Then he spent all those time to make much more networking among directors and all. The real time he put on the movie was about 2 years or so. That’s what I heard but don’t know for sure.
August 7th, 2007 at 10:36 pm
D-war is a stale, uninspired, tired, regurgitated, borrowed piece of trash. The Director, Hyung-rae Shim, is under the misconception that bigger and louder is better. As a director he doesn’t understand the material itself, and by not realizing what he is working with he has failed to convey any vision that he may or may not have had. Transformers is also very loud and very big, but it is a much better film because Michael Bay understands the material is “hokey”. He understands the mere concept of Transformers is silly and never tries to make the movie more than that. He has fun with the project and wants the audience to have fun too.
D-War tries to be too serious. The movie feels clumsy and never really started with a solid foundation; resulting in the crumbling of the film far before the last frame. I feel really sorry too, because the Korean media is pegging this movie as “On Par” with American films, and saying that it will “prove Koreas Place” in the Worlds Cinema. They couldnt be more wrong. It may win awards in Korea, and break box office records in the tiny Republic nation, but that’s as far as it will go. The only thing it has proven is exactly how NOT to make a movie.
At the end of the feature there is a little Biography about Hyung-rae Shim himself and the struggle it took to make the film (all in text and pictures). This last little bit cries “please watch my film so I can get money..sigh I worked soo hard…”, which is a prime example of pure “Film-maker Masturbation”. For those who dont understand what I mean, “think” about it. For me however, this is the worst movie I have seen in a while. You can feel the contempt in my words. There is nothing more in this world that I hate, than to sit through a piece of trash, especially one of this caliber. Its takes a very special filmmaker to make something truly great and the same could be said about the latter.
D-Wars opens September 14th under LIMITED release in the states. I dont see this fairing very well with American audiences who have seen other quite superior movies this summer. —-Dont worry, no CGI Dragons were harmed in the filming of this movie. Koreans are expecting Oscars, I expect Razzies.

i am korean…
i saw this moview
also 400 million people saw it as yet
now it is receiving the mark about 8.8/10 point.
i think the CG is about 9point and story is 7 point.
playng: 6 point.
scene probability: 7 point.
but it show growing figure more and more about the CG. becaust it first begin in korea.
i think you will surprise about it when you see from middle scene in movie
play time is 82 minutes in korea but i think national version will 104minutes.
and i think the scene probability will be improve.

Hello everyone
It is nice to see how many people actually are looking forward to watch the South Korean movie, D-War, by the director Shim Hyung Rae.
Just for some people that do not know much about the director, Mr.Shim has been a successful comedian for the past 20~30 years or so, and throughout his career, he had managed to produce a series of different movies, such as “Godzilla”.
Throughout all these years, he had been working extremely hard to earn money for his career, and this time, he was able to create a
absolutely amazing movie for the world.
However, I do believe that the plot itself can be pretty childish, and I understand those of you who think of the movie that way.
But as a Korean, I am proud of the movie and its wonderful CG effects.
I have nothing against all of your comments, but I thought I might as well stop by to jot down some of my thoughts..
Thank you for listening
and I hope you enjoy the movie,
D-War ;)

I saw this film it was terrible. Very weak plot, no character development and not much fun. I understand why koreans are proud of the movie. Because of the CG, of course the CG is good, but Director shim doesnt know how to tell a story and he doesnt know much about film making itself. This movie did very well in korea, but I dont think it will do well in the states. There are just soo many better other movies you can watch. D-war is a straight to DVD type of movie. The movie cost 75 million USD to make and Show box(the movie company) is hoping to win the American market with this movie. Im american, and I watch a lot of movies. I MEAN ALOT! I have over 500 DVD’s, anyways this movie isnt going to do very well in the states. anyways watch it or dont watch it. Its your choice, dont say I didnt warn you!
August 14th, 2007 at 6:52 am
Save your money and do not go see this movie. Storyline is laughable. You can basically compress it to:
Guy and girl run from snake/pre-dragon imoogi thing (they run a lot, 3/4 of the movie involve them running maybe…), but are not successful. Luckily for them, magic saves the day.
There are scenes that are just ludricous and laughable. If this movie becomes a success in the U.S., it will be because it’s soooo bad that it becomes a cult favorite. The “bad guy” army is something out of Star Wars I, II, or III. Shockingly out of context with its cannon blasters. Yes, the CG is nice, but CG alone does not make a movie. I loved the Host and this is on the other end of the spectrum of movies. Beginning to ramble now so I’ll stop.
August 16th, 2007 at 7:11 pm
i find it the site!! http://www.d-war.com
fucking awesome… :) cool~~~~

so coooooooooooool~~~
that’s my fit!!!!
August 20th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
I had a hard time staying awake during this movie. I don’t get what the hyped up posts are all about. The acting sucked, there is virtually no plot to the movie and CG ain’t that great either. I mean, come on! I’ve seen more plot and better acting in a power rangers TV episode… This movie is total crap. Save your money and get a piece of gum instead, you’ll get more enjoyment out of that.
September 2nd, 2007 at 5:09 pm
I think he said in one of his interview that the Independence Day was his inspiration. I think that pretty much sums up his understanding of movie-making and his goal. He isn’t clearly aiming for the Oscar or Palme d’Or. I think if he manages to crack the US market, it would be a great feat for the Korean movie industry.

This is the greatest movie since Reign of Fire. Its non-stop action and complete neglect of plot left me with my heart pounding and my pants soaked. The Deus ex machina plot worked seamlessly, and when the entire Dragon army dropped dead for absolutely no reason at all I nearly crapped my pants. Then, when the good dragon came out of no where to take care of the bad dragon, I really did crap my pants. Even though there had been absolutely no previous mention of its existence, its a good thing that other dragon was there. If it weren’t for the second dragon, the protagonists would have been forced to play an active role in the story, and that would have ruined the whole thing. I know I’m just speculating, but it really would have sucked if the main characters had participated in the final showdown. Even though I was literally the only one in the theater who didn’t leave 20 minutes into the movie, I predict that this movie is going to be tremendously important in American cinematography. Its influence will be felt for years to come, and it will be remembered as the most important film of the 21st century.

Hahahaha “dragon Warrior”, thats the funniest thing I have read all day haha. I wonder if everybody will understand the sarcasm in your post. Haha, you made my day haha “most important film of the 21st century haha
