Earlier today we posted the theatrical teaser poster for I Am Legend. We told you that the movie trailer would be online tonight, and now here it is. And I must admit, this movie looks even cooler than I thought it was going to be. I always thought the scenes in 28 Days Later of the abandoned city were incredible. And the shot of Tom Cruise running in a completely empty Times Square in Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky was amazing. While both of the aforementioned movie examples didn’t make use of the advances in computer generated effects, it looks like I Am Legend has done that. They have created a surreal world where Will Smith is the only man on earth… or is he? You must check out the trailer after the jump, followed by the film’s official plot synopsis.
We highly recommend you check out the trailer in High Definition at Apple.com if you have a capable system.
“My name is Robert Neville. I am a survivor living in New York. If there is anybody out there…anybody. Please. You are not alone.”
Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world.  For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague-The Infected-lurk in the shadows…watching Neville’s every move…waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind’s last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered…and quickly running out of time.

anyone notice how ridiculously similar the theme music is to requiem for a dream?
June 8th, 2007 at 2:59 am
It will be hard to top Charlton Heston’s performance in the original - The Omega Man. Great movie!
June 8th, 2007 at 3:40 am
I got chills watching it! I absolutely LOVE post-apocalyptic movies!!
June 8th, 2007 at 4:31 am
The first version was THE LAST MAN ON EARTH (1964), starring Vincent Price. It was a low budget Italian horror film, but the storyline was much, much closer to Richard Matherson’s novel than THE OMEGA MAN. However, I do agree that one Chcuk Heston could play Robert Neveille with as much angst and power.

Will Smith looks awesome in the trailer.
I think the movie is gonna be great!
June 17th, 2007 at 8:54 pm
As the book is a satirical and very cold farce in most ways, I don’t see too much promising in this movie. Neville becomes a monster, and although Charlton Heston brought his usual strutting white conqueror to the screen, the context did not display the villainy that Neville falls into through just being who he is, and old man in a new world, which was a lot of the point. I don’t see Michael Bay bringing any of those subtle tones, and while it is brilliant to cast Will Smith, especially as the book never specifies what race Neville is, although it really only matters that he’s human in the end, the preview doesn’t look too subtle…The biggest threat in the book until the end was Neville’s former neighbor in their cookie-cutter 50’s building development, Ben Cartman. Now maybe if you had someone like Christopher Nolan directing, with Will Smith, and maybe Johnny Depp as Cartman, you’d have a fierce and pointed movie…

when i first saw the Omega Man 10 years ago i thought the concept was great but the result was so , so . now if it was released today think of the possiblities . it would appear will smith has answered my prayers . watching the trailer i could feel the fear and hopelessness of will smiths character

I like Will Smith as an actor, but can anyone come up with new ideas for a movie rather than remaking a similiar movie with just a little different twist to it…

I only wish people would open their eyes. This movie is a representation of the things to come in this country. Yes, I know that sounds crazy, well go do your research; read the writing on the Georgia Guide Stones(outside of Atlanta GA). The writing spseaks of a world with only 500 milllions people. Recently, your president’s plot ot set off six nucs here against the US was uncovered and then covered up ( remember- the nucs that were supposedly mistakely flown over nine states..from N Dakota to Louisana). What the general population don’t relies is that hollywood has been given the job of public notice..what most think is entertainment is really a notice of things to come. The Matrix, the Wizard of Oz, Enemy of the State, Wag the Dog are all movies that were trying to warn the public. Remember Wag the Dog..Fake War…Iraq. I suggest that you don’t believe anything that I’ve said here..do your own research. Google Aaron Russo’s “America From Freedom to Facism”.. a movie that was ban from mainstream theatres. Then YouTube Arron’s interview with Nick Rockerfeller maybe you’ll really get the picture then. I’m sure most of you that read this will think I’m completely mad..the way you’ve been taught to think of anyone that speaks of thingsthat are out of the norm. Just think the plan might be to have another so called terror attack prior tp the 2008 elections.. your president has written an executive order mandating that if there is another such an attack that he would retain power.. the power of a dictator.. Again don’t believe me do your own research. In any case be Safe and be Blessed.

lol is jenk serious? this was a movie review comment page. i just wonder where u get the weed your smoking to think something like that up?? it was pretty funny to read though.
November 4th, 2007 at 11:35 pm
I lol’ed.
November 5th, 2007 at 10:37 pm
Yes, that’s exactly what they want you to do. The thing to wonder is who’s going to get the last laugh. Just like 911 . Keep laughing when they chip you and your kids, family. Read the Real Id act and the military commissions act ..then laugh.
November 20th, 2007 at 6:29 pm
The plot sounds fantastic-I hear there is a book? is it true? Welll, you know what they say, the book is always better, but I am expecting a great movie, so the book must be pretty damn good.
November 20th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
Hey, snow!
Nice name.
I just wanted to point out that the original story the action takes place in a part of Los Angeles that is predominately African-American and that while Mattheson never describes Neville as black, neither does he describe him as white. This would leave the decision as to what race he is up to creative interpretation.
Also, George Romero admitted that his “Night of the Living Dead” was inspired by “I Am Legend”. NOTLD, as far as I can see was, the first feature film to have a black man as the main character without there being a “reason” (i.e. he had to be black to motivate the story in some way).
I live in Los Angeles and I HAVE read the short story (it’s a short story not a book) and judging from your spelling, typos, punctuation errors and other grammatical monstrosities, I’m gunna guess yu ain’t read the book ethur.
November 21st, 2007 at 7:06 pm
I can’t wait to see the movie. I don’t care what color the star is but, I have to say, Snow is right. If a black character was replaced with a white character, all hell would break loose.

Hollywood has a habit of destroying SF books when they put them on film. (ie: Damnation Alley - Starship Troopers - The Puppet Masters) So I’m not holding my breath on this one. I’m also old enough that I read this book first. I remember seeing the original “The Last Man on Earth” which though it was a cheapie, was faithful to the Novel. I also remember seeing “The Omega Man” (Which I enjoyed in spite of the deviations from the Novel). Both were thought provoking for their times. The Original book and film were set in a 50’s Cold War mentality, “The Omega Man” was set in a early 70’s Social Rebellion mentality. As much as I like what I saw in this trailer, (It clearly tries to take the best of both the novel and the Heston Film) I suspect this film is another example of Hollywood’s current idiotic blockbuster mentality. There is no Anti-Hero here like in the book and 2 previous films. I plan to go see it because I loved the original story, but I expect to be dissappointed. All I can say is that I’m glad they cast Will Smith, he’s one of the few actor’s who has the talent to pull this off properly.
November 22nd, 2007 at 4:01 pm
Incidentally, in regards the discussion as to whether or not the hero of the story is white or Black. Who the heck cares. I’m white, but I am happy to see Will Smith playing the role. I think he will more than do justice to the film and has always been very deserving of his A listing.
Anyway, in the hopes that this will settle this White/Black argument, I still own the original Novella, (Not a short Story). It still has it’s Dust Jacket on it and the art work on the front portays a white man, not a black man. While this isn’t definite, the author would have been consulted as to approval for the art work prior to release of the book, and clearly he was fine with this.
November 22nd, 2007 at 5:25 pm
The main thing that is making this movie so unbelievable is the fact that Will Smith is supposed to be a brilliant scientist, one of a handful on the earth. First of all, we all know that there are no brilliant black scientist. Lets be real about this, if you want it to be believable, put someone in the part that we think really could be a brilliant scientist.
If anyone out there know of any, or even 1, please, by all means, correct me on this.
November 24th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
I can name some brilliant black scientists. George Washington Carver (agriculture) and Susan Marie McKinney Steward (medicine)
Also, there are two prominant black politicians who are considered brilliant; Obama Barak and Condy Rice. I won’t comment on this again because I don’t want it to turn into a race issue. I am an educator and I know that there could be many more african american scientists and engineers etc…they are smart. My problem is the blaming of the white race if they are not successful. I am not black but, I grew up in poverty, in the “projects” and am from a single parent home. I raised my sister, put myself through college and have 3 degrees. It can be done.
November 25th, 2007 at 3:06 am
hey in reguards to what jenk said…..its true…look up http://www.zeitgeistmove.com…..its an eye opener….our gov’t is based on lies and it will lead to our destruction….
November 25th, 2007 at 3:10 am
and the black scientist comment is completely pathetic……how about you stop being a rascist pig and allow the outgrowth of minority races in higher fields…..
November 25th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
IZ DAT SOME FRIED CHIKENZ ?!!!!!
November 26th, 2007 at 5:57 am
Intelligence is not limited to race. . . and that is a very dangerous attitude to voice. “It’s better to be quiet and have people think your an idiot that to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
Muslim scientists were theorizing about splitting the atom for energy over 1000 years ago. It was this century before white scientists even considered the concept. 4000 years ago Black cultures were charting the stars while white men were still living in caves scratching their Asses and picking fleas off each other. Don’t believe me? Check the historical records and prove that your not just some uneducated racist loser. Bet you live in a Trailer Park don’t Ya?
November 26th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
books/novels are never the same in the theatres so i dont know why people are buggin out that its a black guy and not some skinny ass long haired white guy….personally i think its a breathe of fresh air…
November 28th, 2007 at 8:23 am
this is crazy. They say the worlds going to end in 2012 due to disease and many other things. Like it hasn’t been said before -.-. but u never know it seems more accurate with more facts that actually make sense i really want to see this video to know what kind of disease they are thinking about hitting us with.
November 28th, 2007 at 8:38 am
Guys and Please dont crazy just because its a black guy. i Mean hes just an actor and its Will smith hes one of the best actors i have ever seen in my life. ifs its a black guy repopulating the world SO!! what it all means were not so different now. and its a movie FFS please dont ruin it because its Will Smith being an awesome actor you h8ters!! Lets just watch it and know how to survive it as people! and we can repopulate it together all over again.
November 28th, 2007 at 6:05 pm
Is this movie based on that mayans calender thing or what?
November 30th, 2007 at 8:48 pm
Kind of Ironic that this Legend movie uses 2012 as the year the world ends. The mayan calendar ends on dec 21 2012. “They” couldn’t project it any further than that. Google 2012 and you’ll find some interesting reading on that. It could all be modern speculation, who knows. The Mayans had a culture that seems uncomprehendable. And then that’s Holly wood for you, always mixing a little bit of fact with some bogus wild fiction. End of the world, last man on earth movies and stories are stuff a lot of us have all fantasized. Black, brown, red or white we all have to face our own mortality, self consciousness and fears each and every day
December 4th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
HEY HEY HEY HEY WAZ UP??? TEHE WOWOWOWOWOW THE MOVIE WILL BE AWSOME TEHE CHOW :]
December 7th, 2007 at 2:20 pm
This movie it great, love the story line the mutaded humans, will running and also that big shermen shepert. Can’t wait till i see the movie this weeken, am expecting five stars on this one.
December 9th, 2007 at 4:29 pm
Seriously, the black/white thing is overrated, to me movies are in there own little world, and in this movie’s world theres a brilliant scientist and the movie makers portray him as being black, big deal. And the rules of commenting (if anyone other than I was smart enough to read them) clearly state that there is no hate speech allowed…
December 12th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
I cant wait to see it. Im going Friday after work . I hope its as good as it seems to be.
December 13th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
The reason they got Will Smith is because Hollywood pushes its agenda of placing black men on a pedestal to show how “open-minded” it is, probably a product of white liberals trying to alleviate the twisted feelings of white guilt they’re consumed by.
And it’s true. There simply are no brilliant black scientists. Hell, if you want reality, they should have made the scientist Asian or White.
Another film ruined by putting a thug like Will Smith (i.e. I.Robot) in a perfectly good movie.
When will Hollywood stop pushing its black man worship agenda down our throats?
December 16th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
I’d love to watch will smith’s movies! and hey… people, I think your just too subjective! keep cool
December 26th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
LA PELICULA DEBE SER BUENA, HABLA TAL COMO TANTAS OTRAS MOVIES DE FIN DEL MUNDO Y SIGNOS APOCALIPTICOS, QUIZAS DIFICIL DE COMPRENDER Y DARLE UNA REAL INTERPRETACION DE QUE ESTAMOS EN PRESENCIA DE SUCESOS FINALES DEL MUNDO.
ENTRETENIDA Y BUENO TAQUILLERA A LA VEZ. DESDE TORONTO UN CHILENO VISITANTE, BYE!
January 9th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Well, I know it’s been awhile since all these comments were made, but I still haven’t seen the movie yet and was hoping for some actual reviews. Since that apparently is not what is going on here, I thought I’d like to take a minute to respond to some of the earlier ones made. Number one. I am white. AND very glad to see Will Smith in the role. It’s definatly one of the reasons I am planning to actually go to a theater to see it. For instance. If I have to watch Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks in a leading role like this again, i’ll gag. It’s refreshing to see actors like Will expand their careers and not stick to the same old thing movie after movie. Also, speaking of race, if any thought of what color the leading role is, even crossed your mind in a negative, you are racist. Maybe in the closet, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s there inside you. Grow up, move on, or move away where we don’t have to know you. Okay, on the so called “crazy” person, Jenk, maybe a bit extreme, but yes there is a reality of putting a chip into our children. Under the pretense of keeping them safe. Kinda like a GPS for our vehicles. The government likes to have us under watch and keep. Think about it… your vehicle is always monitered, they know when and where you spend your money(plastic replacing cash). What will be next. So you guys should probably do as Jenk says and research before you point fingers and yell crazy. Or I guess you could just be blissfully ignorant until something happens that you can’t look away from. I’m not into conspiricy theories, but remember that a tale can’t be woven from nothing. There is usually a truth that has just been twisted or added to. Oh, and BS (yes I can cuss I just think your name is tacky) WOW. You show your ignorance and your inability to think for yourself in everything that you said. Racism isn’t hereditary, it’s a learned behavior. Also, I have never seen or heard anything about Will Smith that would lead me to believe that his is a “thug”. Besides that point, the abilities of an actor are and should be the reason he/she gets the role. Their personal life should have no bearing on the job. Would you want to be fired or looked over because someone thought that you were redneck, hick, goth, bully, assh., ect.?? I guess that’s all I’m going to say. Unless of course any of you want to banter back and forth. I’m all for it.
January 10th, 2008 at 12:22 am
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is NOT hate speech. Its just being REAL. Bullshit is exactly correct in what he is saying. Read his comment and remember it. The truth hurts sometimes. Its life.
Liberal Hollywood needs to be more realistic about who they pick for these roles. If they want their movies to be taken seriously they need to pick the right person for the part. This is obviously not the right person for this role.
While I agree with you “girl” about not picking an “A” list actor for this role (ie. Hanks, or Cruise). Someone closer to the character description in the book would have worked. In the book it says that he is a “tall pale man with long blonde hair”. Well at least they got the tall part correct.
Again. Bullshit. You hit the nail right on the head. (I also agree with you on the IRobot. Terrible, just terrible choice)
Hollywood movies=Horrible
January 10th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
once again, get one of your tall long blonde hair men to play the part….i bet it wouldnt be as goood, will smith did a damn good job. plus you can see your white man fighting zombies in 28 days later if you want it so badly. i am legend was a great movie, and i really enjoyed watching it. i never expect movies to turn out like the books which is prob why i liked it so much.
March 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 am
Lmao at jenk and jess about the government, come back to 2008 you damn hippies. also I am legend sucked
April 7th, 2008 at 12:20 am
There’s a lot of douchebags on here.
First of all, “I Am Legend” was one of the worst zombie movies ever made.
Second, 9/11 was a scam to allow the international banking elite to allow the United States to eventually be folded into the North American Union.
Third, anyone ridiculing the above might as well ridicule Galileo instead for all I care. Retards who want to isolate themselves from the insane and downright criminal happenings of their government and prefer the lie to the truth so they can go on about their daily business might as well not be allowed to father or mother offspring.
Happy Mass Consciousness Awakening Folks!
