Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Well, I had a very good week last week. I knew that Pirates 3 would fall short of the record breaking weekend of Spidey 3 and in fact I had it at $160 million through Monday which only over shot the total by $7 million which is pretty good. I under shot Shrek the Third’s second weekend but was only $1 million off the total for Spider-Man 3. I was right with Bug to come in 4th, but was way over the total. I was also right that 28 Weeks Later would make $3 million, but I had it coming in 5th. Instead, Waitress on only 510 screens made $4 million to take that spot. This week there are several new movies opening, four in wide release. Will any of them be able to topple Pirates? Read on to find out:

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. The answer is no. When you make $127 million for a three day (plus late night on Thursday) weekend the chances of you falling down very low are not very good. Even when you take into account the poor reviews it has gotten, it still will have plenty of people going to see it this weekend. Shrek the Third had a similar opening weekend ($121 million) and it got poor reviews as well, but in its second weekend, with competition from this film it still made $53 million for the three day weekend. Pirates should have a similar fate and if it does then what can possibly make that much in its first week to pass it? The answer is nothing that opens this week to be sure. So it will stay #1 for at least a second week and make $60 million.

2. Shrek the Third. This will also stay in the #2 spot this week. It has made a very impressive $220 million so far. In its third week it will continue to drop down but still do very well with $25 million as there are plenty of families out there who haven’t seen it yet and don’t like the looks of the other movies out there this week.

3. Knocked Up. Finally we get to a movie opening this week. Knocked Up comes from the makers of The 40 Year Old Virgin which opened with $21 million on its way to a very solid $109 million total Box Office. Plus it found more of an audience on DVD. But will this comedy have the same type of success? Chances are that it has a good chance to do so. For one thing, it actually looks pretty funny. For another, it has had a ton of commercials for it and most movie goers should be very well aware of its opening (unlike most of the other movies opening this week). It does have a good chance of being a sleeper hit and it gets off to a good start by bringing in $18 million its opening weekend.

4. Spider-Man 3. At $308 million it stands 21st all time in America and is set to leap into the top 20. Will it get as high as either of the first two in the series? Probably not. But in making $8 million it will come close to taking the 17th spot on the list.

5. Waitress. It fell just short of Bug for the 4th spot last week on only 510 screens (as opposed to Bug’s 1600 screens). It has done very well for such a limited release and as it does so it should continue to get good word of mouth and reach new audiences and new theaters (about 100 more this weekend). Waitress holds off the competition from the other movies this week to stay in the top 5 making $5 million.

That means that there are three other movies opening this week that won’t even make $5 million! That is quite a prediction. The one that has the best chance of doing so is Mr. Brooks which is getting the widest release of the new movies. But it has gotten very little buzz and I don’t think too many people will even be aware that it is opening this week. Plus, Kevin Costner isn’t exactly Box Office Gold. The others opening this week are Gracie and Rise and neither of them has had any buzz at all. I don’t think either will do much.

Is Jon Mezzera writing an article? or is he just playing over under with himself…. I think we should develop a Slashfilm gambling ring so Jon can run it and we can be on his usually accurate predictions to make money. “Will Pathfinder make Over or under 60 mill this week?” Ok lets bet! I take under!!!
