Sin City

Yesterday we told you that Michael Madsen believes that Sin City 2 might not going to happen due to the box office failure of Grindhouse. We wondered how one of the film’s main stars was so unsure about the production, when the movie was scheduled to start shooting in June. Now we have word (via RT) that Sin City 2 is officially DELAYED.

“Sin City 2 is still likely to happen, just not right away,” he said. “The script is written and Robert [Rodriguez] and I are raring to go, but it looks like I’m going to be doing ‘The Spirit‘ first and Robert’s going to be doing ‘Barbarella‘ first.”

So there you have it, Sin City is officially DELAYED but not DEAD, at least according to Miller. However, I wonder what kind of business The Spirit will pull at the box office. It doesn’t seem to be something that will attract huge blockbuster crowds, call me doubtful. And if The Spirit bombs, would there still be a Sin City 2? I think not. And does anyone really believe that Barbarella will be a huge hit? Either way, it looks like we won’t see Sin City 2 until 2009, if ever.

Basing Sin2 off of Grindhouse's less than remarkable box office numbers is really a pretty stupid move. Grindhouse is a long gore fest, I have yet to see because I want to wait for the uncut dvd or may be the double dip extended edition(which I am sure there will be). Many of the fans that I talk to, don't want to go and sit in a theater forever to see a cut down version of the film. Where as sin2 is more of something that has a following that will pay to see it in big screen and it won't be a cut down gore fest better seen on your home theater.
  • I suppose getting the chance to make big films in hollywood depends on your track record and if Grindhouse tanked for Rodriguez it could affect his ability to find good films to make but doing Sin City 2 is a no-brainer. You can't compare the two films because Grindhouse was made for a different niche crowd. The producers obviously felt that the concept/theme would sell the movie for them and they were wrong.

Sin City was successful without the same kind of marketing hype that surrounded Grindhouse because it was a safer film to make. People would go see it just as they'd probably go out and see the sequel for the special effects alone.

Bad move on their part if they don't put out a sin city 2. They may just be delaying it until people
forget about the Grindhouse fop aux. my boyfriend and i wanted to see the movie we just couldn't
find the time to sit through it all, watching it in the dark at home with a big bucket of popcorn
sounds much better to me. not to mention they barely advertised the movie. where as Sin City
already has following and a lot of people would be disappointed if another one wasn't put out. its
going to be an awesome movie that will appeal to wider variety of people than Grindhouse did.
