Grindhouse

Last week Grindhouse failed at the Box Office, this week the movie officially BOMBED. According to the Friday numbers, the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double feature dropped a whopping 74% from last week. The film will probably make $4 million in its second weekend, again less than half of the studio and independent estimates.

To further explain how terrible this is: Grindhouse had a per screen average of $494. That’s about 55 tickets sold per theater on Friday. Considering that the movie screens four times during the day, most theaters probably packed a hefty 14 moviegoers per screening. And I’m sure the theaters in Middle America could have been completely empty.

Update: The full weekend numbers confirm our report. Grindhouse had a per screen average of $1,612. Which is $537 per screen per day, and $67 per screening (estimated). So this means that only 14-18 tickets were bought per screening.

Wow. What does this say about us who loved it?
  • Zach
I really hate reading news about Grindhouse...it honestly just makes me sad at this point at just how poorly it's doing...

"...will probably make $3 million in it’s second weekend..."

In this sentence, "it's" should read "its" (no apostrophe).

This lovely rainy sunday morning, I open slashfilm and get a bullet in the stomach.
I dont know why but the failure of this film hurts me more than say, the failure of the rise of taj...Wake me up when the dvd sales blow it apart
  • The English Language Police
A "bullet in the stomach"? I hate to use cliches kid, but: "Get a life."
  • "What does this say about us who loved it"??

It says we have good taste. Grindhouse was an amazing experience. I haven't been this entertained by a movie in years. And it really showed that Rose McGowan can kick axe. (for the record, I never really liked her before).

I don't think it will have much effect on Rodriguez's output considering he will probably be able to sit in his home studio and make movies for the rest of his life. Distro on the other hand might be a bit tough.

Hey ELP, Its just a creative way to say Im disappointed. People who insult others who are just venting frustration? What does that say about you? I said nothing towards anyone, you insult me on my opinion. My hobby is movies, i wouldnt insult whatever it is that you enjoy. Get to know me before you throw insults around, because if you met me...I swear you wouldnt have said shit.
  • The English Language Police
Hey zachy Legend: You're quite right. And I apologize. Simple as that. Have a great day...
  • Aleks
I truly loved this film.. I went to a cinema in Central Park West on Wednesday night where the whole screening was sold out at the 10:35pm SHOWING!!!

The upside to this may be a quicker DVD release (hopefully before JULY) packed full of goodness? :)
  • B33
It's official. America is completely stupid and oblivious to excellent films. It appears many would rather watch complete crap like Blades of Glory instead of a quality film... This ruins any chance for a sequel...
  • zachy Legend
    Apology accepted. Thankyou
  • DIC Celebrity Gossip
I'm not sure about the movie, but I think all those negative stories that came out before the movie was shown may somehow have something to do with Grindhouse being a flop.

  • it's too bad about Rodriguez's marriage but I don't think that the Grindhouse target audience (that failed to show) really cares about that shit.
  • Dave
Actually, if you really really look around, you will maybe realize that you are all freaks and are an extreme and eerie minority. People as a whole think this stuff is crap and are they leaning towards less depressing and convoluted (but still Hollywood crap) stories.
    Get over yourselves.
    Brought here by Digg.
  • Dave that was insightful. Thank you. Is that why Disturbia was #1 at the box office this week?
  • Good, no one will be there when my nephew and I go today.
  • That's a shame... it is really a great movie. With such horrible numbers it will probably get pulled pretty soon.
  • Dave
These calculations are based on what? How do you know the number of screenings per day? Are these just averages? The mean and the mode take on the movie would be helpful to uncover the accuracy of the analysis.
  • Jason Bourne
AH HA!!! Great news... To all the 30 year old living in moms basement who are heart broken to hear the news... I say HA HA!!! I for one am no fan of balls and intestines being cut apart... NAA No THANKS! I'd rather watch a real movie that will give me something to think about. Not a big fan of Blades of Glory which does look funny but I am so glad it's doing better than that 3 hour crap! HA HA suckers! Get lifes and jobs... PLEASE you people are a burden on our social system...
  • Jason Bourne
I can't say it enough! HA HA!!! HA HA!!!

This movie sucks and THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN...

Sad part is all the geeks and momma basement dwellers will rent this on DVD to jerk off to it... It may make up for the loss at the box office.. I hope not...
  • plus.medic
@Jason Bourne: Uh what? Pretty interesting group of comments you've posted there.

Anyways, pretty strange stats. I caught this movie Friday night in Toronto and the theatre was packed, there had to be a good 100+ people there, and that was the 10:45pm screening. This is noteworthy because the movie ended after the public transit (subway, bus routes) shut down which makes it even more effort for people to get home. I imagine the earlier screenings did just as well.
  • JIMMAH!
The only reason people didn't like this movie is cause it has nobodies. People only associate a good movie when they have people like Luke Wilson, Catherine Zeta Jones, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, but when you have not so well knowns like Rose McGowen(yeah I know people do know her, but the market is more limited) and the professional stunt woman from New Zealand, and Kurt Russel who isn't(lets face it he isnt) as popular as he once was.

All in all, I think this movie may not do as well in theaters but this may end up a cult classic, and those who saw it in theater, can smile 5 years from now and say I saw that movie in theaters....bitches
  • adarkmethod
I know my ticket stub is sitting on the shelf. Movie was awesome, i kinda feel sorry for all of you who seem to hate it so much, despite not evn having seen it
  • The number came from averages of how many screenings per day, and how much ticket prices cost...etc. Harvey Weinstein even said a week back that the movie did well on the coasts and in urban (city) settings). So I assume that more than 14 people were in each screening in those type of areas, and even less than 14 tickets were bought in theaters elsewhere. Some theaters could have had only a few tickets purchased in the corse of the whole day/weekend, that's how low these numbers are. It's a shame.

:D snicker, hehe, hahaha, and ownt.
  • Jason Bourne (and MrWhite), you seem to be personally offended by this movie, why? Have you seen it? Or are you just shooting your mouth off without anything to back it up?
  • Nick
Are you kidding? This movie ROCKED! I'm so sick of the crap hollywood's been putting out. Cookie-cutter movies with the same plastic cowboys. UGH.

And to those who think we're nuts for liking it, you must either have a weak stomach or fail to see the humor in the gore. Slashers are entertaining, bodies exploding on the front of a killdozer are hilarious in their exaggeration.

So sad, the disney fans win again.

PS. Jason Bourne... I'm a 24 year old yuppie (young urban professional in case you're unsure of the real meaning) with my own house, thanks. =oP

The showing of GRINDHOUSE that I went to here in the MIDWEST was
SOLD OUT! Every seat was packed and everyone really seemed to enjoy the
film. I know I did. I also know that per screen average, it was shown on far
fewer screens then Blades of Glory. I thought it was a blast and I'll buy it when
    it's released to DVD.
  • lincoln, nebraska. went a couple of days ago. theater was 2/3rds full.

assumptions are the mother of all fuckups ;)

oh yeah. and btw. any movie opening on easter weekend is most likely gonna sell crap. its fuckin easter! everyone should be with family...
  • JIMMAH! says: "The only reason people didn’t like this movie is cause it has nobodies. People only associate a good movie when they have people like Luke Wilson, Catherine Zeta Jones, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt..."

Yeah that movie "300" was a real flop. LMAO!
  • xDMCx
Here's why it may have not done so well: Everyone saw it for free! Here's why everyone would have seen it for free: They all work at movie theaters like me because they're obsessed with movies and making a little scrap part time but mostly for the free movies! I love my job and I love Grindhouse even more.
  • We actually have a 'Drive-In' about 30 minutes south of Dallas, TX. We saw Grindhouse in the manner it was intended. Nostalgic yeah, but the experience was awesome to say the least. I think there were some 20 parking spots out of almost 200 that were empty, and average that to 3 people a car (some had 4 others 2), that is a lot of people for Sunday night. As for there being nobodies in this movie? Ummm, lets see, a SH*T load of up and coming actors/actresses, some old timers and some down right greats. We are talking a who's who of the last 20 or 30 years of movie making. We loved this movie, it was a family outing (two adults and two teen girls), and we had a ball. The B Movie is alive and well, in classic form with Robert Rodriguez at the helm. The problem is, people are afraid of what others will say if they are seen going to the movies to see Grind. Those are the very same people that will sneak in wearing a trench coat and dark glasses to rent or buy the movie; such hypocrites!! Already we have been looked down upon, because we saw the movie, and all it's grotesque and perverse violence... HAVE YOU SEEN THE F*CKING VIDEO GAMES KIDS PLAY THESE DAYS!!!! From this movie, they are making 'Machete'! all because of a fake trailer, and that is the most wickedly awesome move they could make! Blood, Gore, Fear and Total Mayhem. OH HELL YEAH!

    Sweet Dreams Movie Freaks
  • It's because people today have such short attention spans, they don't realize a good movie when it hits the theatres.

The movie just didn't the the right market. So sad too because I know q did his job of re-writing old movies like these.
  • People are sad. This movie is awesome all the way around. Remember Kill Bill? It took a while for people to warm up to this one as well. Their heads can't absorb too much at once. And yes, Easter weekend bad. Why not show it Christmas morning?
  • You're wrong. Both Kill Bills opened with bigger box office that Grindhouse will make in a month. Both opened at number one with $20 million-plus weekends.

Also, the Easter weekend is a lousy argument. Why did Blades of Glory and Meet the Robinsons make over $30 million combined that weekend if nobody went to the movies that weekend? Incidentally, Christmas movies also do incredibly well. Everyone's making excuses because the can't face the fact: Grindhouse just didn't interest as many people as the Weinsteins thought it would.

It's not the first time they've grossly overestimated their own audience.
  • We made it to the show, it was just about a full house. The movie was a real work of art. Anyone who spent time in the all day movie houses of the 70's or the double feature drive ins of the same era would love this "grindhouse". Planet Terror was a great Zombie flick, and Death Proof lives for cars chases.

"

That's a comedy and familiy movie-Most likely it was because it was easter weekend and nobody wants to see some 3 + hour long movie about gore and that fact that they marketed it as an old fashioned movie, people might have expected bad stories, etc. etc.

It’s official. America is completely stupid and oblivious to excellent films. It appears many would rather watch complete crap like Blades of Glory instead of a quality film… This ruins any chance for a sequel…

Yea! Whatever... Just cause you beat off to Pulp Fiction and Clerks, it doesn't make you a movie expert. Does this remind you of your golden years in the 70s? When you thought you had a future?

OK so some people went to see this crap. Don't pat yourself on the back for liking trash... get your mascara ready... wait for the rocky horrow show remake....
  • Why the venom Mr. Bourne? What masterful pieces of cinema do you appreciate? Or do you simply take pleasure in trashing what other people like? Does it make you feel better about yourself?
  • Jason Bourne
Nathan Wrann, I like Cinema Classics like Revenge of the Nerds... even that did better than this piece of shit film... you like this crap??? then join the other losers for bong hits at Tony's this thursday... his moms out of town and left him the 1978 Yugo...

Much of this has to be blamed on illegal downloading. The smartest people, people who 'get' movies like this, are the same people who know how to find these movies online and also have the technology to do so. The people who make "Wild Hogs" no. 1 are usually not the same demographic who know how to access the movie online, or have the money for a computer and internet access that makes it worthwile. If "Pulp Fiction" came out in this age college kids everywhere would be downloading it for free and watching it in the dorms.

The upside is that its almost a given that "Grindhouse" will do very well on DVD. However, Hollywood does not look at long-term success off the bat and the people who give these films the greenlight lose their jobs. That creates a climate of fear which keeps movies 'safe' and boring. This 'bomb' convinces me that movies need a much quicker release on DVD; maybe even instantaneus dates.
  • B33
    @ Jason Bourne

We all know Grindhouse is awesome in many aspects, but you don't need to try to trick us into thinking otherwise. We know your really retarded and have no real life. If you did, you wouldn't be on slash film trying to post utter BS. Not just Geeks liked Grindhouse. Your stereotypes makes the human race look stupid. Your a joke to your kind. Go jump off a bridge. You deserve it after you claimed Blades of Glory was a great film (it sucked big time).
  • Zach
Who the fuck calls them self Jason Bourne. Movie that make you think huh? Yea because Will Ferrell movies are famous for being head scratchers. He's played the same character for the last 4 movies.
  • That's awesome I bet they had fun almost having the theater to themselves lol. Sucks for grindhouse though.
  • B33

I wasn't even alive yet in the 70s...

Why are you even trying? You fail at life. Didn't I tell you to jump off a bridge? Get to it.
