The Super Mario movie was set in 1993, the Gears of War movie is going to be created in the near future at least in 2008, that is a huge technology jump. Plus as you already stated Gears has a war aspect which is always good. Ok fine. Doom was atrocious, minus another Oscar-caliber performance by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, randomly assorted CG monsters, and an out-of-nowhere plot twist (which I liked, to be fair). And man, did you wet your pants when it went into first-person shooter mode? I didn't, but the guy sitting next to me did. Any news of a big screen adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus? Now that I'd paid good money to see. Ok, not my money (maybe yours), but you get my point (assuming I had one).
