At the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, I watched over 30 movies. However fate kept me from seeing Adrienne Shelly’s Waitress, but not without trying. It was one of the most talked about films at the festival. Fox Searchlight quickly acquired it for around $5 million.
The official plot synopsis: The story of one woman trapped in a life from which she dreams of escape. Jenna’s (Russell) secret ambition is to save enough money from her waitressing job to leave her overbearing and controlling husband (Sisto). Jenna is a sharp, sassy woman with a gift for making unusual pies whose recipes are inspired by the trials, tribulations and circumstances of her life. An unwanted pregnancy changes the course of events giving her an unexpected confidence via letters to her unborn baby.
The movie stars: Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Cheryl Hines, Adrienne Shelly and Eddie Jemison.
I’ve heard nothing but good things, so check out this cute trailer.
Waitress hits theaters on April 27th, 2007.

Looks like a perfect date movie (and I mean that in the highest sense of the phrase, minus the sarcasm). Just wish the trailer hadn’t given so much away of the storyline. Still count me in.
Damn, I just realized this was written and directed by the late Adrienne Shelley (she died in November). She was a former Hal Hartley regular. Double damn.

a fun, funny film…Andy Griffith is amazing in his small yet effective role as Old Joe.
Keri Russell and the cast is spot on. The director, Adrienne Shelly is sadly missed
