Last week we reported that 300 had a perfect 100% fresh rating over at Rotten Tomatoes, a website that tracks critical reaction. Amore critic reviews start to roll in, the film’s rating has fallen hard. At the time of this report, 300 is now deemed Rotten at 59% with 17 reviews. As Friday nears, it will be interesting to see if the film will gain or lose critical respect.

The film is currently tracking “huge”, and is on it’s way to an estimated $40 million opening weekend. Not too shabby for a $60 million green screen film. Sadly the film won’t come close to breaking any records, including the R-Rated opening weekend currently held by The Matrix Reloaded with $91.7 million. The movie will instead place around #10, beating such films as Air Force One, Red Dragon and Freddy vs. Jason.

Meanwhile, Dr. Hamed Vahdati Nasab has started a petition aliming the film is not historically correct, and it portrays the Persian Empire in a very poor light.

Zack Snyder’s 300 starring Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Michael Fassbender, Vincent Regan and Dominic West hits theaters on March 9th 2007.

Well since you based your opinion based on the reviews of others, are you ready to profess how incredibly WRONG you are and maybe give your own opinion? Did you bother to screen the film yourself? You actually get paid to write a column based on the opinion of others? What a friggin waste for SlashFilm. You got them fooled. They should revoke your college degree Peter Sciretta. Prepare to eat a huge CROW pie. I bet you lost critical respect from your peers.

    HA!

First off, the $40 million prediction was that of Warner Bros, not me. In another post I reported that the film would morelikely do $50-60, and would not break the R-Rated record set by Matrix Reloaded. And guess what it didn’t.

And yes, I do get to screen all the films early.

Lost critical respect? Are you joking? Meta Critic says the average review rating is around 50%, which is not good. I gave the film a 6.5 out of 10, which was actually higher than most other professional reviews. That said, financial sucess does not mean the movie is good. Look at Wild Hog’s numbers from last week. Or even Little Man’s numbers from last year. Popular usually means crap (music: Britney…etc)
