Brad Bird talks The Incredibles 2

The Incredibles

Will Brad Bird make a sequel to The Incredibles?

“I love the characters and I would love to return to that world,” Bird told a packed audience at the San Francisco based WonderCom 2007.

bradbirdlong1.jpg“But I think at Pixar, the bottom line is the story that you’re telling. And Pixar does not look at sequels as a financial plan. We feel we have a relation ship with the audience and that they believe in each movie we put out. We believe completely in every movie we put out. If I can come up with a story that is as good or better than that first film, then I’d love to return to that world, but it would have to be story first.”

So there you have it. Someone get cracking on a story, and maybe we can make this thing happen.

Next Bird plans of directing a live action feature film (we’ve previously speculated that it might be the big screen adaptation of 1907, a book about the famous San Francisco earthquake.

  • Oh, Come On Brad, You Know We Can Make a Sequel of the Incredibles, But You Know The Incredibles 2 will be coming out this summer 2009 Now Please!!!!! Brad!!!
  • incredibles 2
put an incedibles to out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i loved the incredibles and all you have to do is make something about jack jack
you can make it 5 years later and jakjak will have contol of his powers and some crazy adventure will happen
maybe the kid on the tricicle can become evil
  • Virch
No not the tricycle kid! He can't be evil it's just not acceptable I won't allow it. But I do agree that they really need a sequel. Why not let Frozone have a kid too. I don't know who the villain could be but it has to be someone a lot eviler than "The Molenator" he's pretty lame. I LOVE The Incredibles!
  • georgeio romanio
okay here's the premise: lets try an origin story before all the problems with the goverment , you could explore the source of each characters distinctive powers and the villians .......
  • james
maybe frozones kid cud be evil ;)
  • Janna Green
The entire story begs for a sequel and while Pixar is wasting its time, energy, and finances in dumb schemes like a man taking his house to space by means of a bunch of helium inflated balloons, they could be making a trilogy of one of the most interesting, original writings ever created. If you need assistance with a storyline I am more than happy to assist. The main interest is the fact that it is based on a family and therefore the interests are in the fact that they grow, change, mature, and explore new horizons whether solo or as a group. Violet would now be a 21y/o college student dating a hero (but isent aware) while keeping her powers a secret from him. Spike would be a teenager (maybe 15-16y/o) going through the normal hormonal/akward stage that all teens go through (including acne). Jack would be beyond diapers and walking and talking ( maybe 5 y/o) A supervillian shouldn't be that hard to conjour up. Someone we would never expect and would have a good reason to cause havok. Ok, my story may not be the best, but my point is that The Incredibles can't be layed to rest like any meteoccur movie. PLEASE, GIVE US A SEQUEL!!!
  • Aaron Strout
If you want to make a trilogy you have to age them slower, the second would have to put the kids at around 16, 12 and 7 respectively.

But brad is right, story has to come before mindless sequal fluff, and what you need is a villain and plotline that get at the heart of what the incredibles are, they are a nuclear family so the external struggle of the story has to reflect the "real life" struggles nuclear families go through.

In The Incredibles the father had his mid-life chrisis, the mother delt with the trials of stay-at home mothership trying to keep her family together thru the midst of their chaos, the teenage daughter delt with her feelings of insecurity and had to learn how not to be invisible, the son was a classic ADD child who needed to find an outlet for his energy and potential and the baby was the ultimate potential, unrealised, and represented limitless possibility to everyone else.
  • Aaron Strout
    contd...

So a second story has to be true to this dynamic. Violet dealing with dating and looking at her future to decide who she will be (hero, citizen?), Dash hitting puberty and maturing beyond blind adherance to impulse, jack jacks powers and personality finally becoming clear... Mr. Incredible would have to be a more stable character but the audience will still want him to struggle and it would give Mrs. Incredible the chance to have a chrisis of her own.

And of course, LOTS MORE SCENES OF E!

The trick is putting those elements together in a way that seems like you are writing a story, not just writing a sequal.
  • Ian
The super-villain could be Bob Par's former boss that he threw throught the walls in his office?
  • Michelle
THAT IS A BRILLIANT IDEA! Only problem is they erased his memory to keep the secret, but they could come up with something
  • Tyler and Michael
Brad Bird you better read this when syndrome was holding the baby he injected him with something evil and then that is why he said the baby is sleaping but since jack jack woke up it did not get in all his cells
  • Rewfewmoo
Who is spike his name is dash
  • danny bananny
we so need this sequel how about if tony (violets boyfriend) is evil loving what every one else says about jack-jack please make a sequel !!!!!
  • Oh, Come On Now, Brad Can't you see "The Incredibles 2" will be released on 2009 But If You Just Give Me Another Chance Please!!!!

Yes, he REALLY NEEDS TO MAKE # TWO 2 TWO 2. I already posted above, I really liked #1 and I know that Brad can make another great story.
  • Delarion
I Think Brad Bird Said "All Right, I Will Make A Sequel to the Incredibles 2 which is in theaters tHIS sPRING 2009.
  • Dale
If we could start #2 out where #1 left off, maybe, with the Underminers and somehow work Mr Oliver Sansweet into the movie, it would make for a great story. Give Mr Incredible a new car or, perhaps, a mini van "Incredibled" ed up of course.
  • Fuel For Hatred
    yeah do it! =)
that was such a good movie.

the girl with the long black hair, (i forgot her name)
is emo btw. =) i HEART emo girls..
  • Fuel For Hatred
the story line can be of Jack-JAck growing up with his awsome powers. (they are kooler than the whole familie's) and the miner guy, also the return of syndrome.
    that would be kool. =D
(anybody wanna back me up in this?)
  • Dale
I agree. You can't have a 2 without Jack Jack. He's my favorite character in 1.
  • Senvek
A sequel would be excellent, though to be honest, I think picking up where 1 left off may seem a little trite, and certainly bringing Syndrome back would kill it: Too much like a comic series. Perhaps the government decides to call all the supers out of hiding and organize them into crime fighting units, only to have the information fall into the wrong hands...just a thought. In any case, a second film would be awesome. Favorite character: Violet and Helen. Violet because her personality, and Helen because her powers were so creatively executed. Frozone was very neat, visually.

    MAKE A SEQUEL
  • Dale
Frozone is a "Cool" man. What if the Incredibles could take a vacation somewhere and while on vacation thay find an adversary, maybe. It would give #2 a chance to introduce new heros with different abilities. Im sure the Incredibles some connections they know at this vacation spot. Since they are known world wide, in the movie.
  • Edvard Faronov
please dude make the movie of The Incredibles 2 everybody
    is dieing to see it
  • please brad, make an incredibles 2! PLEASE PLEASE!!!! everybody loved the first movie so u should make another one, PLEASE!! IT EVEN BEAT SHREK 2!
  • Senvek
It was an excellent movie to begin with: It had comic appeal for the younger kids, and yet had a tremendous amount of adult entertainment (The Frozone scene where he argues with his wife over his supersuit was absolutely hilarious) that made the movie a hit with parents and children. For instance, Nemo was graphicly well done, but it was a bit "cutesy" for my taste. My kids loved it, but one movie we all can agree on is The Incredibles. It has been what, two years since it was released, and we still watch it nearly every other night. It never gets old and the story was so well written...if a second movie were to come about, it would be great to see more interaction with the Parrs and Lucius and his Mrs...
  • Ang
My son absolutely loves the Incredibles. He is 6 and asked if there would be another one coming out. The interest is definitely there. I love the movie too and think it would be interesting to see what it was like for Mr. Incredible and his fellow Supers growing up with these unique powers.

Also, as with comics, a series would be awesome. Just some thoughts for Brad and Pixar, lol! Hint, hint!
  • I think The incredibles with be a series like Harry Potter, it was just well put together nnot like the other fictionals where it starts off where its a regular guy drinks some crap becomes a super hero and thats it, no He has a wife some kids and jack jack was normal in the beginning then at the end he gets his powers when Buddy(Forgot hihis evil name) got him and then, i like how Violet can be invisible and Dash can run fast its so well put. if you make another one and maybe some after that, you will be rich... very rich, this movie was a smash hit last year, and if you make a #2 it will be another smash hit, (Hint* Please make jack jack a little older, Not too much older maybe about 4 or 5, and make dash and violet about 13 still keep them young not old.. its more fun) And maybe add that thing with Violet and that guy she likes :) i would ove to see some romance in this maybe another version Rated R nah just playing good luck hopfully you make #2 :) cant wait to see it.
  • Senvek
"R-rated"? Now that's a little disturbing. I think the whole point of the movie was to look at superheros outside of the comic book context and place them in an everyday life genre, and have them somehow find a balance between making breakfast for the kids and saving the world. The movie was serious in that people got hurt and even died, but it maintained a light-hearted aire as it was a satirical look at a genre that has traditionally been all about well-built young adult men and big chested super-models in tights saving the world in dramatic fashion against a villain who was evil for the mere purpose of being evil. Syndrome had a purpose behind what he was doing, and in some regard we have all felt like him at one point or another: Betrayed by someone we looked up to. The supers on the other hand were anything but traditional: An over-weight middle aged dad, an assertive and commanding mother (with some serious piloting skills) and typical sparring adolescents growing up and beginning the early path to maturity. It was great and for those who truly loved the movie, there is no closure. We don't get to see if Dash ever settles down enough to truly learn to master his powers and himself. We don't know if Violet really embraces who she is and accepts life on two stages (though it certainly is hinted at) and we don't know if Bob and Helen take their relationship in a new direction. Personally, I found Lucious and Hunny's interaction over the "Where's my super-suit" to be absolutely hilarious. Imagine if Hunny's superpowers were that she could control fire...fire and ice...now that would be hysterical. Anyway, I digress. A follow-up would have a lot of potential and the key would be not in the Incredibles themselves, but moreso in a well motivated villain...one who is believable and not black and white, but gray.
  • Senvek
in previous post, it should read "it was great for those who truly loved the movie, BUT there is not closure" OOPS
  • Ang
Ok, so here's the story line. Violet and her boyfriend graduate and go off to college. She has managed to keep her super powers a mystery and they are engaged to be married. Moral dilemma on her hands creating doubt on the part of her guy (sorry, can't remember his name). The Parrs and the fiancé’s family are planning the wedding and as ego's will have it, there is mounting tension's and there is something weird about Violets family that her would be in-laws can't place. There are flashbacks of when Mr. Incredible and Elastagirl first met, their wedding day and how their parents responded to each other's family. Were the grandparents also supers? Hmmm...yet another question to bring up in the story. Jack Jack could have his own little show keeping everyone but the audience in the dark about his super powers and Edna that is of course, lol! Dash is jealous and feeling left out and it adding wood to the fire by pranking it up with the would be in-laws.

So, how's that for another idea for a show. I've got a million questions that need answered about the movie. How did Syndrome trick the other supers into coming to his island? What were the other Supers doing while in hiding? Before it was illegal for supers to do their good deeds were they able to have their own special school? Did they have honors there? Did they have a dunce among them even with the gift of super powers? It would also make for a lot of hilarity to see how they honed their skills into their present adeptness. The awkward teen years. Pimply Supers, lol!

They obviously didn't have a Bat symbol at their disposal so how is it that they new where and when something was going down? Was there a secret society? And the age old question that Superman's show answers, how did they come about these super powers in the first place?

Well, I'm sure you've read enough. I think there's an endless amount of routes to take this show. Good luck and your audience anxiously awaits The Incredibles 2.

I liked the first, very good story line. But I don't know if it was as good as
everyone is freaking out about. I do hope for a second though.
  • Dale
One thing I have learned, from my own experience and from watching things, is that the amount of time there gets to be between #1 and #2 will determine how successful #2 is. One factor is, most people's recollection of the movie, as time goes by, will fade, which will also include their feeling of the movie and their emotions. Which is what sells a sequal. Second factor is the more time that passes the more we will be getting into a new audience who will not have first. So what I am trying to say, is that time is a critical factor. The least time span we can keep between #1 and #2 the better success #2 will be.
  • senvek
...ok, so that would explain the whole Star Wars phenomenon? It is true sometimes, but in others such as Star Wars where there is a large fan base pulling for it, time has no significant impact. When Episode I came out after a 10 year hiatus (longer than that actually), people waited days in tents to see the new movie. There where theaters which actually sold tickets just to see the trailers before the release. So, your theory holds true sometimes, but I think in a case such as The Incredibles, should Mr. Bird choose to make a second movie, it will be met with as big a splash as the devoted fans and the trailers make it to be.
  • Dale
I do want #2 to be met with a big splash. My comment was ment for it to be just that. Believe me, I want the movie to be a success and my comments are all intended for that purpose.
  • Dale
My purpose is to help create a movie worth waiting in a tent for.
  • breana
there are sooo many fans that want to see a #2 it would be a big hit!
  • Gabriel
I love the movie the Incredibles. And at the end with the Under Miner you left me thinking there was another one coming. I'm craving the Incredibles 2. Also you made me think again cuz of the game. Please make an Incredibles 2. And a story isnt a problem. Thats why you have people that help you write it.
