I have to admit to being totally disillusioned with the academy awards. I think the whole thing is a sham. I rarely agree with the
winning movie choice. Obviously others agree, as this whole web-site is dedicated to those of us who believe that the so called Academy got it wrong, Again, and Again, and AGAIN!!!!
So many brilliant movies over looked.
Still.....I will continue to watch. In the great hope that one time.......
at least ONCE.....they will get it RIGHT!!!!!!!

Ok, All These Are Good Points, But You Failed To Find The One That Pisses Me Off More That Anything.

In the 1980 Academy Awards the Movie "Ordinary People" A Good Movie, Hell I Even Own It Beat Out "Raging Bull" One Of The Most Top Notch, Movies Ever, Or Atleast Greatest Sports Movie Ever.

And I'm Only 14. if I Can Find This to Be Wrong The Academy Sure As Hell Should Of.

I Think They Should Hold An Academy Award Aniversary Show Where They Hand out Best Pictures and Other Awards To Another Nominated Film. As A "If We Didn't Pick So and So This One Would Have Won"
Does Anyone Agree?

While it may be true that Mystic River should have won instead of Return of the King in 2003; The Fellowship of the Ring should was clearly a better movie than that sappy A Beautiful Mind from 2001 -- so we'll call it even.

Just a hint for future reference: Before you proceed to bash a film, try watching it first. Someone who consults imdb for his measuring stick on the cultural relevance and quality of a film shouldn't be writing about films in the first place. Amateur.

2001 A Space Bore

That shouldn't ba anywhere near an award. Also Gump rules but so does Shawshank so I don't mind either winning. Jaws is not better than One Flew Over btw.

I'm sorry that I upset you Igor, but I was actually criticising Kubricks choice of leading actors, not the actual film itself. I
just don't like Tom Cruise at all. I would have prefered another actor in the lead role.

I agree! I think KUBRICK is a genius!! A Clockwork Orange is a brilliant movie. Almost a work of art! And The Shining..was an unbelievably well made film. All of KUBRICK'S films are wonderful except for Eyes Wide Shut. Maybe, with two different lead actors, it would have been better. Kubricks directing was still awesome, and the film LOOKED great, but I did'nt BUY Tom and Nicole in those roles. And I can't stand Tom Cruise.

thanks for mentioning requiem and aronofsky, he is a special person and his film was magnificant. i'll never watch it again, just because its the most mind f*cking movies i've ever seen. i worked as a prod. asst on his latest film "the wrestler", and he was just plain awesome. but he owes me an interview for my college paper!!! the movie looks great though!!

and kubrick's 2001 is a great choice as well, but instead of just singling out 2001, why not just put ALL OF KUBRICK'S FILMS or something along those lines. dr. strangelove, 2001, clockwork orange, barry lyndon, the shining, full metal jacket... ALL should have won best picture, and every award imaginable because they are the best films that we will ever see. a shame more people dont understand this. oh well

Despite fine performances, no country for old men is at best a b movie.

It's incomplete, we are waiting for the duel and then we just see the results. They went home early.

It's irrelevant to the world, mannered and tedious, but so serious that stupid people feel esteemed by their selection of it.

Top critics gave it 90%. They gave the best movie of the year 97%.

And that movie, shut out of consideration by the 6000 academy super delegates, won every category it was entered in, because people really loved it.

Oh, and it's made almost four times as much money.

The Bourne Ultimatum.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is an brilliant film, but Jaws is better. Call me a Spielberg fanboy or whatever you want, you know I’m right.
Yes You Are.
Jaws was a fantastic movie and a revolution by itself.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is my all time Horror favorite movie.

How Green Was My Valley? is one of the best movies that I have ever seen.
Would like your comment after you have seen it.

Alice Kreymer used such disgusting language. She must be really staunch in her beliefs.
1968's "Oliver!" was a wonderful movie directed brilliantly by Sir Carol Reed. It deserved to win the Oscar. The other musical nominee, "Funny Girl," was also terrific. "Rachel, Rachel" was awful as well as "The Lion in Winter"

I cant understand why Patrick Swayze never won an oscar for Roadhouse. A travesty of justice. It also should have won best picture. A subtle nuanced performance if ever there was one

I agree with Mr. Cuff "10 Commandments" should have easily won the Oscar for best picture in 1956. "Around the World in 80 Days" was an ultimately boring travelogue.
The Academy has made so many mistakes. Judy Garland and Susan Hayward losing Oscars in 1954 and 1955 respectively for "A Star is Born," and "I"ll Cry Tomorrow were ridiculous. Winners Grace Kelly and Anna Magnani could only wish that they were half-as good as Judy & Susan.
In 1943, "Casablanca" should have tied with "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Both these films were the greatest love stories put on film.
Thank G-d the Academy picked "Gentleman's Agrreement" as best picture of 1947. That film was so good because it hit religious prejudice right on the head. Gregory Peck didn't win the best actor award for it and that was a shame.
By the way, how did Ernest Borgnine ever win for "Marty?" The award should have gone to Cagney for "Love Me or Leave Me." No question about it. Doris Day not being nominated was a real surprise. Jennifer Jones was good in "Love is A Many Splendored Thing" but her nomination should have come that same year for "Good Morning, Miss Dove." Why? She totally captured the image of the American spinster schoolteacher.
How could Robert Stack lose the supporting award for "Written on the Wind" to Anthony Quinn for "Lust for Life?" Quinn was barely on the screen. In additon, Kirk Douglas losing in "Lust for Life" to Yul Brynner for "The King and I" smacks of anti-Semitism.
No one mentions the joke of Liz Taylor winning for "Butterfield 8" in 1960. Shirley Mac Laine should have gotten it for "The Apartment."
While "Mrs. Miniver" deserved the Oscar for best picture of 1942, Greer Garson and Teresa Wright didn't deserve their awards for that film. Bette Davis and Gladys Cooper should have been Oscared for "Now, Voyager."
Anyone who thinks that "How Green Was My Valley" wasn't a great film was a fool. In capturing the lives of Welsh coal miners, director John Ford created a masterpiece. It deserved the Oscar hands down. In addition, Sara Allgood should have won for supporting actress in that film instead of Mary Astor for "The Great Lie." She won for the same reason that John Wayne and Gary Cooper won- popularity contests. Dusty Hoffman and Jose Ferrer ("Moulin Rouger") were so much better in their respective years.
While I liked Maggie Smith in "California Suite," who could ever forget Maureen Stapleton in "Interiors?" Ditto for Geraldine Page in the latter film.
You had to be out of your mind to think of "Out of Africa" as best film of 1985. The winner should have easily been "The Color Purple."

Winners Grace Kelly and Anna Magnani could only wish that they were half-as good as Judy & Susan.
In 1943, “Casablanca” should have tied with “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Both these films were the greatest love stories put on film.
Thank G-d the Academy picked “Gentleman’s Agrreement” as best picture of 1947. That film was so good because it hit religious prejudice right on the head. Gregory Peck didn’t win the best actor award for it and that was a shame.
By the way, how did Ernest Borgnine ever win for “Marty?” The award should have gone to Cagney for “Love Me or Leave Me.” No question about it. Doris Day not being nominated was a real surprise. Jennifer Jones was good in “Love is A Many Splendored Thing” but her nomination should have come that same year for “Good Morning, Miss Dove.” Why? She totally captured the image of the American spinster schoolteacher.
How could Robert Stack lose the supporting award for “Written on the Wind” to Anthony Quinn for “Lust for Life?” Quinn was barely on the screen. In additon, Kirk Douglas losing in “Lust for Life” to Yul Brynner for “The King and I” smacks of anti-Semitism.
No one mentions the joke of Liz Taylor winning for “Butterfield 8″ in 1960. Shirley Mac Laine should have gotten it for “The Apartment.”
While “Mrs. Miniver” deserved the Oscar for best picture of 1942, Greer Garson and Teresa Wright didn’t deserve their awards for that film. Bette Davis and Gladys Cooper should have been Oscared for “Now, Voyager.”
Anyone who thinks that “How Green Was My Valley” wasn’t a great film was a fool. In capturing the lives of Welsh coal miners, director John Ford created a masterpiece. It deserved the Oscar hands down. In addition, Sara Allgood should have won for supporting actress in that film instead of Mary Astor for “The Great Lie.” She won for the same reason that John Wayne and Gary Cooper won- popularity contests. Dusty Hoffman and Jose Ferrer (”Moulin Rouger”) were so much better in their respective years.
While I liked Maggie Smith in “California Suite,” who could ever forget Maureen Stapleton in “Interiors?” Ditto for Geraldine Page in the latter film.
You had to be out of your mind to think of “Out of Africa” as best film of 1985. The winner should have easily been “The Color Purple.”

1999 is a sore subject for me when discussing films. I liked "American Beauty," especially for its subject matter, but feel it was a little superficial and really only scratched the surface of what could have been done with it.

I agree with the author about "Fight Club." It should have at least been nominated. But the real Best Picture of 1999 was Michael Mann's "The Insider."
