the hobbit is a dif book. read it and see that there is a complete difference between the feel in LOTR and it.
please tho, no botching the hobbit like star wars prequels or the new Indiana Jones …

I agree with everyone else the only one who could possibibly even remotely could pull off the Hobbit is Peter Jackson. He is the only one who could get it even close to Tolkien’s vision of the story.

You’ve got the battle of five (or six?, its benn a while since i read it!) at the end of the hobbit which will be pretty kick ass but I can’t see much in the second movie, In fact I kinda don’t really see the point of the second one but I hope del toro and jackson prove me wrong!

Mith, Peter Jackson settled with newline and is PROCUCING! I would recommend you google “hobbit movie” and look at any of the first 5 or 6 results. You will then discover, that my shit, as you so succinctly put it, is in fact true and Guillermo Del Toro has indeed signed on as director. Please keep yourself informed before attempting to “correct” people.

I don’t really have an issue with a different style of direction seeing as weta and most of the original design team will be involved. I’m a huge fan of del toro and all his films (with the possible exception of blade 2) and I think he has a similar feel for texture and lighting as peter jackson, I also can’t help but think that with all the baggage that has come with the hobbit, lawsuits and so on, Jackson may just feel a little jaded in directing it and a fresh perspective may be a good thing!, del toro is a director with integrity so its we should no fear of a dumbing down of the hobbit.

no doubt! however, if bilbo is telling this as a “children’s story” as many are apt to remind you (seriously, try mentioning Tom Bombadil, you’ll have a 9 page dissertation on the subject…) anyway, maybe i should say SINCE bilbo is telling this as a Children’s Story, it may exaggerate the danger, yet minimize the gruesomeness of detail.

In my opinion, LOTR was a much darker tale than TH. My thought is that Bilbo is telling the story as a heroic epic where it fades into a slightly less menacing version of LOTR. The great battle at the end would be the most menacing part. But have a pause in the middle (where Bilbo was asleep) where he’s dialoging about his bravery yet the audience can tell he is blustering.

Nah. A good story has the hero tell the dangers as twice as dangerous that way the heroic part is twice as heroic, and this is how I see Bilbo telling the story. Tolkien wrote all of these stories to be epics so the traditional literary uses of extreme danger and over glorified heroism should remain. However I’m sure Chris Tolkien wouldn’t let them make something that isn’t good. He keeps a strangle hold on this artistic licenses like you wouldn’t believe.

I’ve noticed that several folks have alluded to other actors returning for the hobbit. The problem is, there are only 3 actors that are an almost “must!” Of course, Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen & Ian Holm. It has been said that Ian Holm may not show for the movie. That would suck as they’ve already shot several scenes within LOTR which show him AS Bilbo finding the ring.

Thankfully, it seems that Ian McKellen is on deck for another crack at Gandalf. Andy Serkis would play a slightly younger Gollum (meaning his bald, computer-generated head would have 27 hairs rather than the more sparse 14 hairs of LOTR)

We MAY see John Rhys-Davies as his father Gloin… i can’t see Orlando showing up, there’s barely an allusion to him in the Hobbit.

All that said, I hope the Hobbit is made and directed by PJ. I would love to see it begin with Ian Holm telling a story to some kids or beginning his book in Bag End and that story as an in-and-out narrative of The Hobbit. In this way, we could mix the Children’s story (a softened tale of what happened) with the more real-life story (very much like LOTR). One could argue Bilbo would recount the story with a flare for the heroic and remain quieter on darker, more sinister imagery.

peter jackson should direct it. he has established a certain style with the lord of the rings trilogy movies his interpretations they have a certain them and that theme and interpretation should carry over into “The Hobbit” movie. If someone else directs it would probably be noticeable different style than the style we know from the Lord Of The Rings so I agree no one elso should direct it!!!
