I agree with you Ellen, there is some truth in the story, well except for the creatures. I've never read the book, but I've watched the movie about five times. In the comentary with the author of the story, she says the story is based on her own life, well about her son's life. Her son lost a close friend while on vacation or something, so she wrote the story based on that. This was a great movie and I could watch it again and again, even if the ending still brings a tear to me eye.

This movie was based on a hugely popular kids/young adults book. I read the book when I was in middle school or something like that, so the ending wasn't a surprise. I don't know anyone my age who hasn't read this book. I'm 28. I think the saddest part of all of this is that there are kids going to see this movie who obviously never even read the book! This book is touching, meaningful, and memorable for anyone who grew up with it. I think it's absurd that people had expectations of it being anything other than what it was written to be. It is reality that wonderful people touch our lives...and then leave the world all too soon. I like the truth in this story.

The message to the movie for my daughter was pretty clear.

"Imagination may be well and good but in the end the real world will get you and kill you."

This movie is totally unsuitable to children.

Sorry to be coming into this conversation so late, but I just watched BtT this past Tuesday.

To those who love the movie, I do to. In fact it's now in my favorites, along with "What dreams may come" and "Bicentenial man" (movies that really effect me on a deep emotional level).

For those that are upset, I agree with you as well. I sat down at home one day to relax (and get away from the computer for a while), and decided to watch the movie on cable. From the description I was expecting something like narnia (as much as peo ple hate to hear that, that's what I was lead to believe I was getting).
Well, I was sadly mistaken... because what I got was the totally unforeseen death of my the single character I liked the most.
I'm 26 years old, but I'm also very empathetic to these sorts of situations in movies and such. I have the unfortunate ability to watch a movie or read a story and make that story more real to me than real life.
Add to that the fact that when I was 9 I had a 12 year old friend (my first love) with whom I had a traumatizing separation (one day we were together, I went away, when I came back I found that her family had moved. No goodbyes, no nothing. I never saw or heard from her again). Additionally there was someone I knew in middle school (who I had a bit of a crush on) who looked very much like AnnaSophia Robb in the movie.
All of this (my history, my curse of empathy, and the unexpected and sudden death of Leslie) came together to form the single greatest attack on my psyche I have ever been victim to.

For 3 days I was totally and utterly inconsolate. I would be overcome with such overpowering despair that I found myself int he bathroom keeled over the sink, tears streaming down my face, virtually screaming from the emotional agony I was in. At one point (to my horror) I even thought about suicide (what scared me the most was how appealing the idea was to me at the time, to spite the fact my life is the best it's been in a long time).
I could constantly see the scene in which Leslie and Jesse say goodbye to each other for the (unknowingly) last time repeating over and over in my mind for THREE DAYS STRAIGHT... Leslie walking off carrying PT in her arms, pausing for a moment she slowly turns and waves to Jesse (giving him a smile), then turning back she gives out a slight giggle and walks off disappearing behind the hedge row as Jesse looks on, a look on his face that instantly conveys his feelings towards Leslie. That is, he finally understands the full bond he and Leslie share, and how much she means to him.
That image would go through my mind over and over. When I do work, when I go to sleep, when I wake. The only respite being for the times in which I would visualize the horrible incident itself. Watching as Leslie, who to spite being disappointed that Jesse isn't around is smiling in that way she always does. She slowly grabs hold of the wet rope, still drenched from the rain that previous night. Pulling it around she steps up on top of the log and prepares to swing. She jumps slightly before putting her legs up and placing her feet on the lower knot of the rope. Beginning to swing forward she leans her head back to look up at the clouds, her weight quickly stressing the weakened rope. The happy look on her face as she stairs up, looking almost directly at the rope as it snaps. The image barely registering in her mind as she falls. That look of contentment on her face barely turning to one of dread and uncertainty just as the back of her head comes into contact with the sharp edge of a rock sticking out of the bank from which she just swung.
She is instantly knocked unconscious as she goes hurtling into the creek. Water starts to enter in through her mouth. Her body convulses, she coughs violently, her body fights to expel the invading water. Being unable to keep up, her lungs fill with the fluid, slowly drowning her. Deprived of oxygen her body begins to shut down, one final last thought echoes in her mind, "Jesse I need you", as she slips away into nothingness. Her now lifeless body lying there in the cold water of the creek, just waiting for someone to happen by and discover her.

See... that's what sort of thing going on in my mind right now. Very disturbing stuff.
It wasn't until the 4th day (yesterday) that things actually got any better. Everything was on and off, up and down. The depression I had felt the days before now came in waves. Instead of being trapped in an emotional hell all the time, I was now in and out (which I have to say, was an improvement).
Now (aside from what I went through writing about Leslie's death above) I get mostly the feeling like I'm being torn apart on the inside, and a general sense of dread, highlighted by only a few truly bad moments, like reading or posting things about Terabithia.

So yeah..... the movie truly messed me up in the head, and it is something that will effect me for a very long time to come. However, I both admire and despise it's ability to do so. I can't help but respect something that causes me to loose such control over my emotions in the way I have. But I find that lack of control disturbing, and somewhat as if I was violated. I mean how dare ANYONE cause me to feel like that... you know?
It's all very confusing (it's been a very rough and confusing week in general).

This movie was nothing that i expect, its was incredible, you see, after Leslie dies, jess find the love and cares of his father, a bond with May Belle, the begining of a friendship with Janice, what makes me sad its not the movie, its the negative comments, you should close your eyes and keep your mind wide open.....for me its a movie never to forget, i love it.

Regarding Bridge to Terabithia, its the best movie a ever seen long with my 5 year old dauther, we can learn from every step of the movie, not to be so hard with our own kids, the meaning of friendship and love, hollywood must focus in this kind of movies and should stop making violent, fighting and killing movies.

At the end..... we should lern how to use our imagination, how to love and share with our love ones.

Those of you disappointed by the ending of "Bridge to Terabithia" will certainly find no solace at the end of the "Narnia" series either. I won't ruin it for anyone who has not read it but when "The Last Battle" is brought to the silver screen there is really no way to escape the peril in this one either. I see how some of you wish that "Terabithia" would have a "Narnia" rip-off, well in the near future, I feel there will be similar discussion on similar boards about how misleading Disney was and how they ruined a "perfectly great series." Perhaps it is time that people realize that movies aren't made exclusively to satiate one's feel-good, rather well-made films will do just what they intend to: whether it be illiciting otherworldliness or dosing us with concentrated reality. Someone once said (along these lines) 'that the best [films] are those that are so unbelievably fantastic that they could never happen or those that are so undeniably real that they could never be made up. 10 to 15 years down the road do you think your children will be remembering "Meet the Robertsons" or do you think they will be remembering "Bridge To Terabithia?" No one remembers "The Flight of the Dragons" from 1982 but ask anyone about "The Princess Bride" or "The Neverending Story" and you'll get countless replies. These films that have substance, that have these fantastical elements intermixed with real life situations seem to be the long-runners. Personally, I'm tired of Disney's recent trend of computer-animated hum-drum recycled plots. Let's give the kids the benefit of the doubt.

So my girlfriend put this movie on HBO today and I got all rapped up in it and couldn't stop watching it, and I got what it was a bout the metaphors and what not. I just dont understand why she had to die and what the mainline messgae of the movie was or the book for that matter? I just dont think it was necessary and I kinda was liking the movie probabaly cause when I was young I had was always like those kids imagining things so I could really relate to it. With that whole death part of it, it just ruined it for me and yeah.. it was very dissapointing.

Well i saw it and cried he does deny but later says she is in your hands now making a float with a picture he drew of her aceepting this . I thought it was a movie that well might help us revert back and remeber our imagination and childhood with friends we played with. The ending the way it did really mad me cry >i do think it teaches us how to deal with others that persecute us and theese to were obviously that way and even help the one girl who is persecuting them. she is even the troll that they fear this is the message . The other message I guess would be enjoying every moment god gives you and not taking it for granted .My wife walked in the room and saw i was crying I being a very macho type of guy got up and walked in the bathroom embarrased she had seen . i Watched it with her later and I have to say knowing what was going to happen and trying to control my emotions was the hardest thing as we have 4 boys and i cant and dont want to ever emagine losing one of them . The upbeat part at the end brings it back to what he and leslie both felt together as they experieced that together as the father said she love jess and if it were not for him well,I think bringing his siter to a place that was special that he and leslie shared was a loving thing to do in her memory.sad she died I mean this really tugged at me I m not good with this kind of stuff anyway but I know as I tucked my sons in I kissed them on their forheads and will not let a day go by that i cherish each day i live here with them in the life god has given us here and in etenrity.

The people making negative comments on this movie have something incredibly wrong with them. Disney tricked me? Are you kidding me, soooo many Disney movies are sad and confront death like this movie does. See Bambi. I read this book when I was ten and then saw the movie a few months ago. Both are excellent. Go give your brain dead six and seven year olds a DVD of Teletubbies, maybe they'll appreciate that shit more.
