Jaws

This month has been a terrible month filled with rumors of direct to DVD sequels and remakes. First came rumors of The Goonies 2 and Gremlins 3 for home video release. Then news came of a Spies Like Us remake being scripted by the Eurotrip crew. But the real shocker came late last week. The internet was abuzz with rumors of a direct to DVD Jaws sequel. But thankfully indie filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) debunks the rumor.

“Allow me to debunk. I dropped an email to David Linde to ask if this was true, and he said folks are confused: there’s an HD “Jaws” DVD on its way, but no “Jaws 5″ straight-to-DVD,” wrote Smith, who has referenced JAWS in almost every one of his films. “And if you can’t believe Universal’s top brass, who can you believe?”

Late last week Filmrot reported that a fifth JAWS movie was being prepped for a direct-to-dvd premiere. According to the rumor, the film would completely negate everything that happened in JAWS 3 and JAWS 4 and again have “Roy Scheider’s character, Brody, returning to do battle.”

But thankfully that rumor has been officially KILLED. I don’t want to make an accusations, but it seems to me that too many rumors are being thrown around now-a-days, only to be debunked days later. I find it sad that websites are posting false information for the benefit of hits. The practice helps to discredit all movie websites. So guys, can we put a stop to this? The initial jump in hits is probably very appealing but if the readers don’t trust your information, they aren’t likely to become return visitors.

Now Kevin, can you now debunk Gremlins 3 and The Goonies 2? Enquiring fanboys want to know!

Don’t be a douche about this news. Gazz, the writer at FilmRot posted something that came from a real person, and reading a real script. So how about you do your research and see that the report was based in fact which lead to logical conclusions before you lambast websites that “report false information for the benefit of hits.” I find it sad when a blog has to denounce another one for the benefit of hits, and to have the empowering feeling of ego.

My friend at Disney heads stuff all the time, but I don’t print it because it is usually not true. Real reporters should confirm stories or at least print them as rumor and argue their legitimacy. If you’re going to argue against that point, than I don’t know what else to say to you.

  3. Gravatar

Actually, I’d like to argue that Gazz already knew that. If you re-read his post, he states “[He will] e-mail a copy of the script that is allegedly being pushed into production.” His tone and word choice say that this is in the running, and yes, someone of importance wrote a script, and someone else of importance wanted to do a Jaws DVD. But it’s also said that it’s only from the mouth of a source who works there. We all know Hollywood is complicated, and who knows? Maybe they just don’t want the news to come out so soon?

Also, arguing their legitimacy is not “real reporting”, by that you would be claiming that AICN is a perfect movie news website, because they post everything their readers send in, but they post that the audience should “take it with a grain of salt,” which makes them good reporters because they admit their sources aren’t perfect.

Universal says it isn’t happening. Actually they had no idea about any Jaws sequel. So it’s not happening: Case Closed. I don’t understand how you can still argue about this phantom script nonsense

  5. Gravatar

    Wow.

Fact: Gazz has a script. Written by John Lansing. It is a “proposed” project which means nothing has happened with it except MAYBE a pitch. That would explain Universal as a whole saying nothing is planned.

Unknown: Whether a studio cares to read it and produce the script by John Lansing.

It’s not a phantom script if it’s sitting on his lap. I think you’re mistaking the literal term SCRIPT meaning that anyone can write a story on paper, with “script” meaning a studio is backing a writer to make a project.

Have you ever seen Latino Review? They review scripts all the time that don’t go through.

Steven Spielberg would never let a direct to dvd jaws sequel be released. I reread filmrots posting and the whole thing is confusing and misleading. It’s not really clear who wants to do the sequel…etc. You’re making a lot more sense than they are. Either way. It’s not happening, so repoting on it is pointless. And reporting on it without giving all the facts is ethically wrong.

Does Spielberg even have control over something like that? Wouldn’t he have blocked the atrocities that are Jaws 3 & 4? Woof.

I concede that the article doesn’t have a lot of specifics besides the story and script writer. And on that, chances are you’re correct that it won’t happen, so I will stop bitching about it.

Spielberg does have control in the Jaws franchise. If he didn’t want it to happen, it wouldn’t happen. As for the horrible sequels, somehow he allowed those… JAWs 3 was originally set to be a national lampoon spoof of the series. The idea was crushed by Steven Spielberg.

Interesting, I thought Universal had control of the franchise itself. That’s good because he makes better decisions than the majority of studios.

Jaws 3 made my head hurt.

As an avid fan of the Jaws films, i am exstatic to see the return of the big great white. What bermused me was comments made that it was a direct to dvd film. This perplexed me because both richard dreyfuss and roy schneider would never be involved in a film that was so poor it would go directly to the dvd rack. such as other modern classics that have been ruined by straight to dvd editions ‘American Pie, band camp’ a major culperate. Personally i’ve seen the trailer, it looks wicked, standard sequences such as the shark cage and the shark eating a helicoopeter have been included. personally i cant wait!

  13. Gravatar

i am ready for this movie to come out.maybe they need people to help make this movie.

  14. Gravatar

i heard that roy had died and he died in little rock arkansas. and i live in arkansas, so they won’t be another shark movie now. it made me sick when i learn that he died

  15. Gravatar

Wasn’t Roy Scheider’s character killed off in the Jaws franchise? Heart attack, or stroke?

  16. Gravatar

roy HAS died ! and that is very tragic ! and his charcter died of a heart attack , but no one said anything about his 2 sons ! and richard’s character is possible to see, i would hope …… with the movie technology of today i think Mr Spielberg should definately scare the crap out of us again just like he did with his first one ! maybe if enough fans bug him , he just might ! lol
