Did You Know: Martin Scorsese scattered hidden and not so hidden X’s throughout The Departed as a homage to Howard Hawks’ classic 1932 Scarface. The great filmmaker used the symbol to hint at everyone’s impending doom.
Miami Herald movie critic Rene Rodriguez recently went through the movie and took screen captures of all the X’s he could find. I’ve included a couple of his pictures below, but you can check out his whole collection at this link. Film School students analyze the symbols constructed in classic films all the time. But I think most people will find this fascinating.
