I had a very good week last week. All of my top 5 movies made the top 5, although in a slightly different order. I had Night at the Museum #1 and Stomp the Yard #2, but that was switched. In my defense, it was one of the closest races I’ve ever seen as less than half a million dollars separated the two. I was correct in my statement that there were going to be low box office totals as the #1 movie only made $12.3 million. Even with my foresight of a low total, I still over shot and was about $3 million over for the totals of four of the five films. I was way off on the total for the Hitcher. I had it coming in third with about $5 million more than it made at #4. But, all in all, it was still a good week. Will I do better this week as four new films open to give Stomp the Yard a run for its money? Read on to find out:
1. Epic Movie. I hope that this movie is a major bomb as it looks terrible and someone or something needs to put a stop to its producers. Last year, I said the same thing about Date Movie which opened with a strong $19 million, but stalled and only got to $48 million. I can only assume that was a disappointment considering that all of the Scary Movies have made well over that, and three of the four have made over $90 million. I am hoping that movie fans will see the commercials and agree with me that the movie doesn’t look funny, but I fear that many will still go to see it. It won’t do as well as Date Movie did, but with the lack of competition, its $17 million will still be enough to take the top spot.
2. Catch and Release. This is a chance for Jennifer Garner to show that she can open a movie. It has had a ton of commercials out there right now, and again it seems like there isn’t much competition. I don’t think it will be a big hit. I don’t think Garner will prove that she can open a movie. But I think it will do o.k. making $13.
3. Stomp the Yard. It has had a good two weeks with $41 million so far at the box office, but it dropped way down from week 1 to week 2 despite holding on to the top spot. That ends this week as it falls to #3. It will bring in $8 million.
4. Night at the Museum. This has been a very huge hit with $205 million, and several weeks in the top 2. But like Stomp the Yard, it will drop down from the competition, and for itself, from its own longevity. It just can’t keep making money week after week. It will still possibly hit $250 million, but it will be very slowly creeping if it does so as this week it will only make $7 million.
5. Smokin’ Aces. This movie has an incredible cast, but that won’t lead to incredible numbers at the box office. It will have a disappointing opening, barley cracking the top 5 with $6 million.
The only other movie opening this week is Blood and Chocolate which just hasn’t had much exposure to raise its profile with the movie going audience. It won’t make the top 5.

I sat in a packed theater at Rocky Balboa — not exactly the most highbrowed audience — when the trailer to Epic Movie played … poorly. It got as many laughs as the trailer for Schindler’s List.
Dead silence.
I hope it tanks.
