Box Office Predictions: January 19th

I did not do very well last week as I way underestimated Stomp the Yard. I was correct with Night at the Museum #2 and was close on its total. I was a little low on The Pursuit of Happyness and way overestimated Arthur and the Invisibles. But that was last week. On to better things this week. There are only two new movies opening this week, and one movie moving from a limited run to a wide release. That doesn’t leave a lot of competition for Stomp the Yard for the #1 spot. Will anything pass it to take the top spot? Read on to find out:
1. Night at the Museum. After falling to the second spot last week, it will have a revival and reclaim the top spot this week. In its fourth weekend, it only made $4 million less than Stomp the Yard made in its opening weekend. It has shown very good staying power and is about to top the $200 million mark, a great mark for any movie, but particularly for a comedy. It actually lost a smaller percentage of its audience last week than the week before, which is another sign of staying power. Stomp the Yard got off to a good start with $26 million over the four day weekend, but I don’t see it having enough staying power to hold off Night at the Museum which will bring in $16 million in what will turn out to be an over all down weekend at the box office.
2. Stomp the Yard. As I said above, it did have a really good opening over the four day weekend. It will continue to do well, and have a good run, but it will drop significantly and only make $15 million its second week, but that will still put it over $40 million for two weeks.
3. The Hitcher. This is the one new movie opening that I see cracking the top 5. It looks to be a good horror / thriller and could act as counter programming for the week. Last week I said the same thing about Primeval and was wrong. But this week, I will be right. It has had a ton of commercials, much more so than Primeval. It has a good opening with $13 million.
4. Dreamgirls. It has done very well so far, with over $60 million at the box office. It just won Best Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes which will give it even more buzz than it had before. It made $10 million over the long weekend, and with the momentum it picked up from the award, it will do nearly as well over this regular three day weekend making $9 million.
5. The Pursuit of Happyness. While not as successful as Night at the Museum, The Pursuit of Happyness has also shown great staying power and has grossed nearly $140 million so far. It won’t be able to hit the $200 mark, but it will continue to move closer in its last week in the top 5, bringing in $8 million.
The other new movie opening this week is The Dead Girl which hasn’t gotten much attention at all. The Good German moves from a limited release to a wide release. Unfortunately, the movie hasn’t garnered much positive buzz. It got shut out of the Golden Globe nominations, and is not likely to get any Oscar nods either. This type of movie relies on the awards season to build a name for itself, and The Good German hasn’t gotten enough hype to do well at the box office.
